So the ideal Top Gear presenter needs:

1) To be approachable and friendly
2) Have a good image to the average man-on-the-street
3) Be a bit handy behind the wheel
4) Not take themselves too seriously

So, Ladies and gentlemen, i put forward...
I do hope the BBC pull it off, but I suspect that most past viewers will just draw a line under it and move on to other things.

I don't think I'm particularly unique in that I'd got tired of old TG (though from the viewing figures I'm relatively uncommon in having stopped watching it) and looking forward to the new one - though I wouldn't be too surprised if it flopped. I do tend to agree with your comments on dropping in established celebs - but then I'm not sure whether they had any other option with such an established major programme, it's not what it was when Clarkson et al took over (though bear in mind he'd already spent a long time working on TG before he took it over).

it's BBC and they got my money because I pay my TV license.

rookie mistake!

A bit like saying I pay for tax for free NHS? Ya?

I pay my tax so I have should have a say about how it should be spend like on Trident?

I pay for your salary like those working in the public service?

My tax pay/subsidies your welfare benefits ...

My tax pay for/subsidies your University loan, yes not free, which majority will disappear without a trace by not paying back ...

So how difference is my complain about the new TG from BBC by comparison? Explain? 😯

Just curious, but do you say "Ya" when speaking?

Can't quite understand what all the fuss is about in this thread.

Matt LeBlanc is a massively talented driver, is a massive petrolhead and has a pretty relevant skillset. Whether you though he was good in Joey or not.
Chris Evans is the only solid element in new TG unfortunately, as he's bought into it an will milk it to massage his massive 'fiery' ego. Even though I don't like him much, he probably will be fairly good at it.

The rest of the presenters will be there only temporarily (except the Stig I imagine) albeit for a season or two (apparently), so the whole thing could be quite fluid.

Eddie Jordan is only rumoured to be in for presenting on motorsport (which he's pretty good at)... but this is still not 100% confirmed.

@Chewkw, aren't there enough politics thread already. PS. Thanks for paying my wage, I'll be milking it for some time.

Not when speaking because the native (you lot) speak differently. However, when I first arrived yes I used it as I was still learning and I got funny looks and laughs. So I laughed with them ... 😛

Bear in mind in other culture/language we use it as an expression and although it has no meaning by it's own ... adding it at the end of a sentence can change it completely from a serious tone to comical one ...

You will notice some Kiwis, OZ and S.African started to use them too but not exactly "ya" but some "sound" at the end of each sentence. Listen to them carefully ... 😀

So there you go ...

In my office I get whinged all the time from my colleagues ... I mean no issues being made to be fuss so I am giving you lot back your whinging habit. 😆

edit: Ok, no more comment from me for TG regarding the presenters ...

Oh, I didn't realise - hence struggling to imagine a geordie ending a sentence with "Ya". 🙂

Explains some of your posts too if English isn't your mother-tongue. What is?

My Geordie mates get a good laugh when I wind them up coz it's very different from their normal wind up.

I speak Malay, a bit of Indonesian, Chinese Mandarin and 3 other Chinese dialects in addition to English. Me mate speaks all of them and Tagalog as well. My father could even speak Tamil at one point I kid you not. My communist grandpa was teaching Japanese during the Japanese occupation ... at gun point. 😆

At one point I could switch from all these languages at ease without having to think about it yet got all the meaning right.

When hanging out in the far east we could each speak different languages to each other sitting at the same table. Very common really.

Coz ^^^ he is very serious so I need to wind him up a bit ... 😆

Whinging is the most detestable part of modern 'British' culture and is never anything to be proud of.

Eddie Jordan is confirmed - no, just no! A right mish-mash of presenters.

Quite glad I took up Amazon Prime last Autumn when it was on offer.

I presumed the mention of EJ was a joke. One of the few plusses of the beeb losing F1 was getting him off our screens. Still if that's the price we have to pay to rid ourselves of Hammond I'll go with it.

Strong on motor journalism - maybe it'll be more about cars than arsing about.

I would love it if they bring on the Stig for the first time and he simply takes his helmet off and introduces himself. Get rid of an old gimmick.

The Stig's morse code on the Top Gear site says 'Chewie, we're home' in case you were wondering.

No way will they do that - that gimmick makes the BBC shed loads of money.

I'd love to hear the racing driver talk about the cars credentials rather than a reported comment or two.

TBH the only ones I know are Evans, LeBlanc and Schmitz. Of that the only one I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing is Sabine since she's the only pro driver. I think with her they're going for a modern answer to Tiff Needel albeit better looking.

From the look of it they're going for a happy medium between old TG and old new TG, getting the balance right and then trimming (May didn't join old new TG till series 2)

It's maybe, actually, quite good. And maybe points to what they're hoping to do?

Harris and Schmitz for their racing/knowing how a car actually feels and works knowledge.

Rory and Harris will be able to explain properly what's good about a car. And Harris for some serious car geekery and getting very excited about things and explaining accurately and without the cliched "feels/goes/looks like a rampant elephant/wibbly blamange/truck driving murderer" stuff.

Irvine and Schmitz for some racing coverage and background- old TG was sadly lacking in any motorsport stuff.

LeBlanc and Evans for some enthusiastic amateurs cocking around and doing the things the viewers would want to do.

And it's probably not fair to call Rory a token then Harris is part Iranian, and LeBlanc, Schmitz and Irvine are all foreign.

I think it looks alright - I'll give it a go. Can't possibly be as cringey as the 'banter' between the last lot.

And yeah what a shame to have a bit of diversity rather than just representing the boorish middle-aged Tory tosser demographic.

I'm loving DM readers getting in a froth about a line up which is still predominantly more white and male than the population. Maybe it would be better if the Stig's hat was more pointy?

I'm also looking forward to it - it seems with the big team (which will presumably come and go on different programmes) that they might have found a way round the issue of not copying the previous setup without having to throw out what made it good. Or at least that's what I'm hoping.

Interesting, more people with a greater breath of experience and talent amongst them.
I'm hoping it's going to be a show about interesting cars, some technical stuff for those of us who are actually interested in that sort of thing, not interested in the racing side of things so much, but i suspect it will be a completely different show in which the only thing it had in common with the old top gear is the name.

The arsing about was the fun bit - cars are boring, who seriously wants to watch an hour of stuff about cars?

OK, so I think this is pretty cool:

"words can't describe how quickly the speed comes
And how the **** can it do that when it weighs three tonnes?"

😀

The arsing about was the fun bit - cars are boring, who seriously wants to watch an hour of stuff about cars?

There's bound to be arising about - just hopefully less cringey dad bants in front of a sycophantic studio audience of Sun readers.

EJ - Does anyone like him? (Apart from himself)
SS - Can anyone understand her? (or is that not the point of her selection?)
American bloke - Stick shifts, trunk, gas, hoods

🙁

It's really pretty unpleasant and arguably racist to describe Rory Reid as the 'token black guy' - suggesting he's not there on his own merits but because of some PC agenda is pretty insulting to him.

Iz cos shez forrin innit?

Yes - I can understand her, better than some who claim it as their native tongue.

It's really pretty unpleasant and arguably trolling to describe a studio audience as Sun readers - suggesting they're not there on the rest of the experiences merits but because of some non-PC agenda and lack of intelligence is pretty insulting to them.

Sorted that for you.

Looks like an improvement to me, would watch in for Chris Harris alone.

Just the fact they've now got two presenters who can actually drive properly is a huge step in the right direction.

I don't want to have EJ's babies and nor am I particularly excited about him, but then neither do I hate him, and I suspect only the minority who do hate him are being vocal. Seems quite knowledgeable from what I've seen.

You're suggesting SS has a foreign accent? Hard to understand, no.

I'll give it a go when it airs but predict it's going to be dull. Eddie Jordan nearly as engaging as Martin Blundell as a presenter and the less Chris Harris is featured the better.
Never heard of Rory Reid before but the youtube video above hasn't got me excited either for the coming episodes.
