We should try to keep them safe no matter what they do, because we need strong leaders who are not afraid to make unpopular decisions if necessary. After they have done their stint, we owe it to them to let them do whatever they want (within the law!), again as a matter of principle.

Two post above suggest there are still those who will support British troops whatever atrocities they are ordered to commit - Billyboulders and Mathewjb.
That wasn't what I was suggesting. Just pointing out that the decision and blame for going to war lies elsewhere from the soldier in the field.
It's too late to go into more detail. Off to bed.
