@hora
Anytime, just give me a shout. As for Halifax A&E, my lad dislocated his shoulder last weekend, and we met several folk in Hudds Casualty that had been brought across from Calderdale. Already happening. Tod and HB casualties are taken to Burnley as far as I know. That Burnley Rd corridor into Halifax is a nightmare, especially at weekends.

@DaveyboywonderHave you got any routes i can nab off you for the halifax area? My mum and dad live at the bottom end of Saville Park too
Millions. Happy to lead a ride around here in the new year...
As for Halifax A&E
I didn't know it was closing. Thanks for the heads-up. Have had to take riders there on occassion following incidents on Hebden-tech-fests. I though they closed Burnley A&E years ago, so I guess I need to figure out where Huddersfield A&E is. Is that the closest now?
I don't think closing Halifax is set in stone. Still in consultation I think. Huddersfield is an extra 10/15 minutes drive. Unless its rush hour and you get stuck at Ainley Top and then you're looking at 30 minutes :S
depends which road you crash on for A&E in Todmorden, Burnley road=Blackburn, Halifax road=Huddersfield & Rochdale road=Bury 😕

made me smile.
raised in Pecket well, lived in HB but now glad I live in Todmorden
as a commuting cyclist, I always imagine anywhere between Halifax and tod to be a complete and utter nightmare. even on a weekend the road through the valley is a complete mare.
Canal bank Ton, sod the road 🙂
Golcar - home of the Colne Valley MTB Challenge 😀
.. and unsurprisingly the Golcar Brewery
Moved to Hebden in 2000, 95% for the biking. Still here. It's great in many respects and has more going on than Tod. Bloody pricey (for West Yorks) but you can see why when you live here. It's not perfect, but nowhere is. Easy train commutes for Leeds and Mancs. Crap weather, mint riding. All depends on your priorities. Good luck wherever you choose.
Scapegoat- I was road riding through Scapegoat Hill area today' LOTS of beautiful houses for sale at the mo- why? Is the Rose and Crown good? 🙂
hmmm, weird this has been resurrected, should get confirmation tomorrow, but this is looking pretty likely.
Best get looking for a house!
lets get real with those commute times to the m62... hebden to junc 21 milnrow is 39 minutes with a clear run ( via todmorden) tod to the same junction is 26 minutes.. you can from hebden cut 10 minutes from the time by going over the moor via cragg vale.. all need the road clear.. its not often..tod to m65 is 15 minutes..
going through halifax will involve you measuring the time on a sundial.. there are ALWAYS roadworks ( its taking no1 daughter over an hour from tod to school in halifax at the mo..
for which is best to live in hebden wins by a mile but tod has the best market chippy and the aforementioned supermarkets.
neither are viable for daily commutes along the m62.. i ve done em and it aint pretty its pretty but you ll spend your life in the car..
Take a look at Blackley above Elland. New development going up up there.
Rural, close to the motorway but far enough away to get no buzz from traffic. Plenty of Hudds and Halifax riding on the doorstep.
Good local club riding on a Wednesday from Salterhebble in Halifax -
Whats with JCTs 23-26 on the M62? There are ALWAYS crashes there. Is it a magnet for metal on metal action?

+1
We moved to Hebden just over a year ago and we absolutely love it. The riding is really amazing and there's so much going on for a town of its size. Yeah there are downsides but far outweighed by the positives IMO. I quite like Tod too though. Bit more 'real' than Hebden - in good and bad ways.
Housing certainly isn't cheap for W Yorks but it depends what you're comparing it to. We looked at a smallish but nice 3 bed terrace with big garden in Mytholmroyd that was only about £130,000 I think. Decided we wanted to be in Hebden itself for now. I am glad we don't live right down in the valley bottom though - lack of light is an issue.
Mate lives in Golcar and that's a pleasent enough place.
If you only have to have access to 'The North' you'd be much better off looking at Skipton, Otley, Harrogate, York, etc. Much nicer places then those suggested.
Depends on your priorities/preferences. No decent riding from the door in York (or Harrogate IIRC).
Harrogate is 'nice' but full of rich older folk IME. I'd rather live somewhere a bit younger/livelier personally.
Otherwise Outlane for the win. Its not '20 mins' from the motorway.
Because the motorway goes through the middle of it.

To clarify, the A&E closure is in consultation, while Calderdale Royal has acute medicine, obstetrics and paeds, it has had no emergency surgical facilities since 2007 - anyone who presents to CRH needing admission under surgery/T&O already gets sent to HRI.

Actually Rochdale Rd=ROH; Fairfield (Bury) has similar limitations to Calderdale and NWAS should bypass with any moderate/severe trauma.

Highest house prices outside London?
York? I was brought up there and lived there for 22 years before moving to Halifax. We were there shopping this weekend and yes, its a lovely place but a) its full of tourists b) as such, the centre is MASSIVELY set out for tourists c) the riding from the door, as has been pointed out, is non existant if you're wanting off road.
Its not actually that expensive though unless you're wanting a 5 bed townhouse with garden and parking within eyesight of the walls. I always think York is actually pretty reasonably priced. Transpost is expensive and crap though. A64 is rubbish at peak times and the trains are stupidly expensive as its outside the West Yorkshire PTE. Get to Garforth and train prices drop massively.
Huddersfield and Halifax A&E treat different types of injuries. There was something in the local rag the other week where someone got knocked down on Huddersfield Rd, right outside Calderdale hospital and got taken by ambulance to Huddersfield.
Either way, if it were me OP, I'd be looking at South Halifax or Hebden Bridge. Slightly more for your money in South Halifax, better transport links etc, fewer hippies and lesbians...

Agree to a point although there's more for younger folk then Tod or Hebden B. There is riding very close by at Stainburn, Swinsty or up in to Nidderdale. Houses can be very expensive although you can still get something decent for 200k.
TBH I work there but choose to live in Skipton. That would be my choice. 😉
Love living in Walsden. Just up the valley side so we see daylight, roll downhill onto the train for commuting, trails out of the door.
Tod is fine, a bit more sensible than Hebden Bridge. The market is good and there are a couple of decent bars serving proper beer. There are a few good local breweries too.
Oh, and Tod health centre is one of those with lots of extra services and will do x-rays and stuff which is handy.
Used to live in Mytholmroyd, great riding, pubs, shops, primary schools and High school, petrol station, Englands longest ascent, canal, station, cheaper the Hebden, near enough to walk in to Hebden but far enough away from it 😉
Oh and mountain rescue are based in Mytholmroyd as well if you are accident prone!
Highest house prices outside London?
Hahaha, not even close. Average house price in Harrogate £221,000

Top ten most expensive towns
Most expensive: Virginia Water in Surrey, average house price £1,182,000 Even the tenth most expensive on that list is still almost 4 times the price of Harrogate, I doubt they'd even make it into the top 50.
It's a different planet down in the South East, not just in London.
Going to scout the place out next week.
better not rain 👿
better not rain
The Pennines in December. What could possibly go wrong?
Good luck Nick
There are plenty of people on here to help if you have more questions once you've had a good look around
cheers dude.
Looks like I'll be there early next year by the looks of things. I'll not expect a fuss...some bunting, children waving small flags and cheering, perhaps a band?
😀
don't move up here, its rubbish, the riding's crap, the houses poky and dark, the locals surly and the beer awful. oh and the local rag is mediocre at best.
As long as you dont ride a road bike its fine... far too many of "them" around here now.
Cant beat the Calder Valley.
🙂
When you come up to check it out - surely you need to sample the local riding to get a proper flavour? I'm sure we can rustle up a guide between us (all on strictly legal trails obvs).
