personally i'd go for the Passat TDI myself.

Just bought a saloon Passat TDI 130 and it goes when you want it to but its also giving me a steady 45-50 mpg on the commute to work (half busy motorway half busy edinburgh traffic)

and they don't look half bad in my opinion
