I've taken up a volunteer position at my local National Trust estate - Stourhead, and was wondering what outer layers those in the know wear?

I have recently got myself some glorified bin-bags to see me through as I don't want to trash my expensive mountain clothing.

a good base layer is vital (imho) as is a decent set of lightweight waterproofs.

for a bit of comfort a decent hat/buff is good.

i use all the above when im in the field with the army aka:work.

army surplus goretex or breathable jackets from agricultural supplies places.

Mole Valley Farmers is near stourhead if i remember correctly

Hoggs is a brand i seem to remember from back in the day as an alternative to Barbour

worn over a decent base layer and a good quality boiler suit so you can strip layers to suit the conditions

If you want something a bit posher then paramo is a very comfortable fabric to work in

Yup, just been to Mole Valley Farmers this arvo and got the aforementioned bin-bags aka non-breathable waterproofs but being so use to breathable fabrics ill have to see how it goes. Mine you gardening is a little less aerobic than biking/mountaineering!
