you know..... these type of things....
we usually hire sunbeds abroad on crete, price creeping up to 10 or 12 euro now when we went a few weeks ago, and im conscious its a lot more in some of the more popular places, although granted, we're unlikely to visit any of them.
we saw one on the beach last month and wondered whether theyd be worth buying to save a bit of money, and may actually give us more shade than a bog standard umbrella.
pro's - pay once, take it in the suitcase, more spacious, find your own place on the beach
cons - wifes not sure she'd like to lay on a towel on the sand or even a towel on a mat, she likes a raised bed so itd be a gamble. i get what she means as we've tried that previously and the mat and towel just get covered in sand.
plus the footprint of these things when spread out could make you feel like youre hogging the beach if its quite narrow or not much spare space, so i guess itd depend on the beach really, maybe for the more remote beaches. i thought that the ones with guy ropes may allow you to reign in the footprint a bit if it isnt too windy, but then you run the risk of people maybe tripping over them as they walk past.
so, im just interested if any of you have one or have tried one, can think of any more pro's or cons? theres plenty out there at a wide price range, decent quality to cheap chinese i guess, so any recommendations?

used to take them when the kids were little to get them out the sun respite.
ours was a decathlon one - worked fine. Didnt need anchors - but came with bags you filled with sand for windy days.
We've had a pop up beach tent throughout the last 15 years or so to keep ourselves/kids out of the sun, yes we do have to sit on towels/mats at floor level like paupers but that's pretty standard on most UK beaches.
If we're abroad and trying to travel lighter I can certainly see the advantage of something that can fit in a case like the shade pictured, I have had to stump up for multiple beds/umbrellas in the past and it does get a bit annoying at times, but we tend not to spend consecutive days sat on a beach so getting diddled for 20-30 Euros is not the end of the world.
I'd buy one and pack it if it's like 15-20 quid and there's space in you r case. Even if you don't use it on hollibops it might still be handy for UK use down the line or you have to keep kids/grandkids out of the sun at some future occasion. much more than that though and I'd probably give it a swerve, you could achieve the sale with a couple of walking poles and a tarp if you already own such things..
But how will the attendants brong you more cocktails if you don't have an official spot?

went down the chatgpt rabbithole yesterday and there are plenty out there around the £30-£40 mark, i guess its just whether or not i can see us using it either home or abroad, or whether it just becomes another garage ornament. that will largely be down to how mrs-ex-p gets on with one. "this is rubbish im off to pay for a sunbed" and we may as well just bin it 🙂

Personally I love a "Plage privee", generally there's a clean toilet, and showers, and some - especially France, have waiter service to bring food and beer, plus money spent on holiday isn't real money anyway, right?

Now i i was going to a beach for a day in the uk i would be happy with a towel. But everything getting sandy for a week or getting shotblasted by the wind blown sand etc.
Nopety nope. Spend the 12 months after worrying about the cost.
