This forum seems to attract a particular breed of middle-class, pseudo working-class, elitist debater with nothing better to do. It would be no surprise to me that UK climbing has more of them! Educated single men with beards who spend too long in the countryside with other men up a rope? Nobs
haha the best thing about this thread is coming on here and freely insulting [s]each other[/s] essentially yourselves!
Ive found taking a step back, & having a 2 minute rule to post on threads that have a tendency to go A over T, before posting has helped loads.
I also feel only posting negative things & worrying about the state of the forums makes me angry for absolutely no reason ๐
I agree there are a number of "heavyweights" who see their role as to insult and be rude to any posters. Yes it is often witty but often just caustic.
Under my own 2 minute rule I should of gone to bed, but since I bothered to type the reply below then stuff it ๐
Junkyard, there used to be other 'heavy hitters' there will be more to come, do they matter in a cyber world?
Drac bringing up the old badger thread tonight has made me remember how things haven't really changed on here since 2003, sure the posters were different, but it was the same mix, it all came good in the end, no one will be searching the forum for years to come for car threads, but the classics will always be there, just remember the good times & stay out of the crap threads.
Cheers.
I find it quite amusing when a poster runs out of coherent and logical argument and then has to resort to insults, pure class. No harm in debating en masse. ๐
Its goes through phases. I find it informative and entertaining, but am often horrified by some of the views.
It went through a bad spell with racists a few years ago, at least that is over now. There are a few bores, but you know which threads they will be on so just don't engage with them.
It used to be all about jey boys and singlespeeders
ur thread is saracin...
... well someone had to say it.
I'd hate to think how long I've been inhabiting this forum, and I'd be even less keen to know how long I've actually spent reading. It seems to go through phases where there are outbreaks of nastiness, usually about politics or religion, but as others have said, I generally avoid those (especially the religious ones, as I have a degree in theology, so the incoherent level of the debate is bloody infuriating) or only read them when I'm in a sufficiently good mood to find them funny - usually by imagining certain people in a state of drooling apoplexy as they type.
There have been a lot of good folks on here - some of them are still hanging around and others, I guess, are long gone. I haven't met many of them in real life, although I did once spend an interesting week in the Alps on a biking holiday where all the guests slowly realised that we sort of knew each other from singletrack on the basis of the infamous 'badger' thread, and people were trying to suss out who was who in terms of user names to see if we could declare ourselves without bringing an online tiff into the real world. All worked out well in the end, and we had a good laugh for the rest of the week.

Hah you wanna try the UKClimbing forum. This is like playschool compared to that. You would think half the worlds subject matter experts are on there. Its enough to make a person stop visiting the site alltogether.
Exactly why I stopped visiting that forum about 2 years ago. I've been using this one much more since, but I'd have to agree that it does seem to be getting that way too.

Interesting as I've noticed a slight improvement there over the last couple of years.... ๐
For 8 hours each day, you people save (but occasionally endager) my sanity.
It's either you lot or my work colleages and to be honest, it's no contest ๐
I am hardly ever on evenings or weekends.

You'll be first against the wall come the revolution ๐

Name & shame? 8)
Why not change the tempo and start a new dance?
Beautiful.
The badger thread was awesome, although I think I started to see this place in a different light after the 'football spoiler' meltdowns a few years back. It never really recovered imo.
Y'know what.
It's not the trolls and argumentatives that are the problem, it's people who take them seriously.
If you're sitting there going "OMFG, I can't believe they've said that!!" and getting all worked up, you've already lost.
Life's too short. Someone's being a bellend, let 'em. Point and laugh from a distance, you'll get more out of STW. And the Internet. And life.
i like it. has been a source of banter, lots of great practical advice, and most the piss taking is hard to get upset about. have been here for years under a couple of names and it seems no more or less nasty than ever.
It used to be all about jey boys and singlespeeders
they're all still here, just pretending they ride 'rigs' with 160mm travel and chain devices down perilous descents at high speed - being jey is a life sentence.
by the way....i've just farted!
keefus ๐ How come no one started fighting yet?
Yeah. Trolling's not what it was... ๐
