You can go places like this in its far more practical sister:

Goog's Track by Mark-Farrell, on Flickr

Though occasionally its clearance lets you down when it's fully loaded with water, fuel, a fridge etc...

If I lived somewhere you didn't need to do this to get to the back and beyond, I'd buy a car, not a 4wd. Having driven Evoques as courtesy cars whilst my Freely is being serviced, they seem to be vehicles that don't know their own purpose - not great at being a car, and stupid big alloys (and brakes beneath removing the option of smaller wheels) making them severely compromised off road

Normal people will think you are a twunt, but from what I have seen most 4x4 owners don't care what other people think.

I was given a 1 month old £60K+ ML350 AMG sport as a courtesy car when my estate was written off. It was the worst handling embarrassment of a car I have ever driven. I took it back to the rental company and asked to swap it for a VW Sharan which was much better in every respect + I didn't feel like a massive bell end every time I drove it. Each to their own.

Buy one if you like them. Reasonably practical, reasonable economical, reliable (for a Land Rover) and a low depreciation 4x4. Not for me but each to their own.

I find it ironic that you can say "looking to buy a Discovery" and get a reasonable response compared to this thread.

If you want to support UK jobs (which is a wonderful if sadly all too rare choice) then to chip in with the diesel estate comments I'd also look at Jaaaag. Diesel XF estate is about the same cash and a much nicer drive if you don't need 4 wheel drive. And Evoque drives VERY differently to Freelander. Had one of the latter and didn't care for it too much (though Mrs Fopster loved it). Borrowed Evoque was much better. Hope you enjoy whatever you buy - I know some nice people who drive Evoques, are not Orange and can park in a bay. I'll get banned for that sort of comment...

I'm glad that
A) they create employment in this country
B) there are marketing departments in the UK savvy enough to brand them successfully
C) there are finance deals available to punters

However I have driven one and it feels like a large car on sponges. It doesn't drive well, it is not nice looking, it's not quick, it isn't very economical & it's expensive. It does however have that important x-factor that the marketing people have cleverly given it, it appeals to a certain personality type that puts an AGA into a 'detached' red row new build, that also wears schuuuues and boasts about having a pedigree dog. As others have said they are now easier to spot on uk roads.

I'm glad it's a success. It's good for the country.

I don't understand the need for such big vehicles in the UK.

*the Ford Galaxy owner backs out the thread, slightly embarrassed*

For me, if it was a toss-up between the FL2 and Evoke for UK driving every time the winner would be a Scooby Forester

Ok, may not be so fast off the line (who seriously needs that sort of performance in a 4x4 anyway) but in every other respect I'd far rather have one.

I read the Guardian and think they look stylish, my alter ego would drive one.

As someone said the STW style police think the Cotic Rocket is a design classic ffs, I wouldn't be taking fashion tips from the bed wetting liberals on here.

Depending on where you saw it, it was quite possibly a development/prototype car as they use an 'urban' camp for them. Or it was just someone with no taste.

Having had the pain/privilege of working with JLR the last couple of years, these things are annoyingly good. Don't like the styling, and the space is comically bad, but they are really very good to drive. Nothing massively exciting, but just solidly good. Same with the big ones - a Range Rover is phenomenally good taken as a big luxury car.

Still wouldn't buy one myself mind.

The biggest downside I have heard about them is the tiny rear window, and small side windows which make it difficult to see anything.

I think they are starting to look dated too.

I like the look of them but the FL2 would get my money instead, for more bike warez space in the boot and huge cash savings.

My better half has a 190bhp fully-loaded FL2, it's a nice place to be and quick - and I'm not sure where your 'huge' cash saving would come from; hers was north of £35k.

Bike-space-wise though the only way to get a (large) MTB in is with the back seats down - whereas with her FL1 I could just take off the wheels and open the back window and the bike would just sit across the boot floor with the bar sticking out.

A lot of pre-supposing comments on this thread eh ...

Anyhows ... A while back I had a high-spec evoque for about a month whilst waiting on my XS spec freelander 2 getting sorted out. As already said, the evoque and FL2 share similarities in underneath design, but in use they are different.

The evoque cabin inside is nicer I think ... just a more modern design, nicer dash materials, funkier dials, better steering wheel and I personally thought that the left leg space was one of the best ... felt more specious than my full size range rover. The Fl2 is more plasticky ... its still nice enough though.

Driving position, the freelander has the better view all round ... windows are small on the evoque towards the rear ... and oddly, I much prefer the shape of the bonnet on the FL2 in front of me.

Driving ... similar engines / drivetrain so its a case of take your pick. I would say that the auto evoque felt like it had more grunt ... i read somewhere that the autos have more torque lower down the rev range as the manual gearboxes are a little weak in 1st and 2nd ... but I've not read of manual gearboxes breaking.

I have a manual Fl2 ... in hindsight, I'd get an auto next time i think. The evoques command shift was good for overtaking.

At the time of the evoque, I have a 6month kid ... the evoque was just that bit smaller than the Fl2 that I noticed it on a daily basis enough to annoy me at the time. 2 main things ... the lower height of the rear doors made it more difficult to get the kid into the big padded seat, and the boot was a few inches shorter in depth such that where the buggy would fit front to rear in the Fl2, it wouldn't on the evoque ... so there was less space for other things.

Worth bearing in mind for bikes. That being said, the Fl2 boot isn't really all that great either for bikes ... I struggle to get them in without having the seats down.

Since the boy has grown up a bit now, those issues don't really apply, and even now we are talking about replacing the Fl2 with possibly an evoque.

Overall, its a nice car. I like them. I'd buy one. But for the money, you also get a lot of other cars that are maybe a couple of years old, but are a lot larger ... (Disco4, RRS etc)

If you do get one don't forget that you need a poxy private number plate with the letters and numbers rearranged and bodged to tell everyone your name. How else are you going to let everyone that you can afford a 'baby' RANGE ROVER?

IMHO £35k on a car is ludicrous, you can get a more than worthy FL2 for £10-£15k depending how many miles you want on the clock 😉 😛

Apart from the image they are a poxy hateful vehicle. I work on lots of them and they are riddled with stupid electrical gremlins. And the build quality isn't that great either. Removing the front bumper are we sir? Well that's wheels off, liners out and skinned knuckles all round. My niece has one and bless her I do live her but she ticks the boxes perfectly when it comes to target market.

Yep, and FWIW I've never spent more than £7k on a car in my life - but it's her car and that's what she wanted. I'm relatively easy with it as her previous car (a FL1) was bought new and run for 7 years (and 110k).

We also live in rural Scotland and she has horses - so can justify the vehicle 'type'.

If you like it and can afford it - get one. Wouldn't myself but there again you are not me!

I would probably go the Yeti route if I wanted a 'small' 4x4 or an Audi Q5 if I wanted a more premium model. If I was buying though I would go for something more robust that I wouldn't mind scraping like a Defender or even a Berlingo 4x4 if pure off-road capability wasn't really required.

The association with that Beckham woman means I'm out. 🙂

That & the lack of £45k to spend on a car.
I guess a lot if these get sold on lease deals anyway though.

I'm amazed at what £15k buys in terms of cars these days, if your not bothered by having a new numberplate.

I'm the same never spent more than £7k on a car and don't plan to any time soon. Never had high repair bills from not buying new, and always use decent indys for service etc.

What I don't grasp is take for example this

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201408136581686?atcide=emc-cars-EAF004

High Spec Edition, sat nav, all the toys, heated leather etc etc 2010 68k on the clock.

Why would I spend another £20k? what would it get me? It wouldn't look any different externally (apart from beat the jone's 2013/2014 plate)

The above is one example there are plenty of sub 50k examples for £15k (eg. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201402221997193?atcide=emc-cars-EAF004 )

I'm with you on that but most Evoque owners will be buying on lease. These types of people don't buy things outright and value for money isn't an issue.

I'm confused by the "Disco 4 is the pick of the range" and "just get a Range Rover" comments.

The Disco (3&4) and Gen 3 Range are 1000kg heavier! Their fuel efficiency and running costs are just not in the same league.

As a general everyday car they are just plain idiotic. The 2wd Evoque is relatively light and compares favourably to a 320d x drive auto:

Stats: BMW 320xd lux auto / Evoque SD4 Prestige auto
0-62mph. 7.5s / 8.5s
MPG: 59combined / 47combined
££££ £35k / £41k

I'm not a huge fan of SUVs in general, but I applaud JLR for introducing a desirable, relatively efficient (you can't do much about drag whilst maintaining the market demanded SUV styling and driving position) luxury alternative to the pointless purchase of a Disco4/RR/RRS for those who NEVER go off road.

The Evoque looks like nothing else on the road, and looks great because of it.

It was on the M69. It had tinted windows and a personalised plate and was sat immovably in the outside lane despite a distinct lack of anything much to pass on its left.

Coincidentally I think that was the day I decided that humanity was uttelry irredeemable and that the sooner we're wiped out by a ginormous meteorite the better.

The association with that Beckham woman means I'm out.

TBF it was only a special edition Evoque... I was told by a friend of a friend of a friend etc.. that she was always presented with 3 options, and they placed the option the designers wanted in the middle, as she always picked that one.
I'd happily buy a RR if I won the lottery, but wouldn't touch the evoque with a shitty stick 😉 (just my gem of a opinion)

Those bikes are quite nice though.

And people are mainly pointing they are cars for ****ers, not that they're too expensive.

And the OP is probably trolling anyway.

But otherwise, I agree entirely.

Stereotypes exist for good reason.

I nearly got wiped out by one of those bloody things yesterday! Overtook me then turned left across me, causing me to slam the brakes on, and take evasive action to avoid being squashed! No indicators were utilised during the execution of this potentially cyclist-crushing manoeuvre.

As I gesticulated and swore at the * inside, I noted with weary predictability that it was a peroxide blonde Essex-a-like, with sunglasses Bono would be too embarrassed to wear, on account of them being a bit gaudy. She didn't notice me swearing at her, as she hadn't noticed me before trying to kill me, as she was (again achingly predictably) gabbing away on her phone.

You may not actually be a complete *, but if you're behind the wheel of one of these, then absolutely everyone, without exception, will assume that you are! The compulsory private plate they all sport merely compounds the idea.

some people will be incompetent drivers whatever cars they own. Be it an evoque,BMW, Audi or rover 45. You cannot blame cars for idiocy.

Yeah but in other terms it's more like buying one of these over something that works 🙂

Smaller than most estate cars, tiny windows, full or pillars, no visibility and all the other good things but at least it has a nice badge and a price tag to help people know how rich you want to feel.

Well there's incompetent, and there's being an arrogant, inconsiderate ****! Certain cars scream the latter! This is exactly that car!
