This Messi bloke looks promising. What a finish that is.

Cape Verde taking Argentina into extra time - is this one of the greatest performances of the World Cup so far.

Argentina go through and another of the minnows go out. Really dont understand why we needed 16 more teams, what have they added to the competition 😯

The pass and Messi's control and finish were ridiculous for the first goal but the Cape Verde goal was the kind you dream of scoring.

So we're back to the 1am if the forecast thunderstorms got it's going to be a very early morning for those staying up.

Every ‘minnow’ has looked decent - organised, fit, well drilled, a bit of guile and quality - aside from Scotland. Maybe Australia too. Embarrassing.

For avoidance of doubt, have loved having the Cape Verde, Curacao, Iraq, Haiti, Scotland, etc in the tournament. For all its faults it proves football is the global game, their fans have definitely added even if their teams are supposedly weaker, and when they run a champion that close, even better.

Trust chief shithouser Emi to spoil it with a great save right at the depth

Looks like I missed a corker last night then? Go on Cape Verde!

I went for a few pints in my local last night while the Australia Egypt game was on and asked Matt, the landlord if this was him…

and he said that on the contrary, he’d already applied for his late license, got it, and every single table in the pub is already booked. I predict a lot of people not going to work on Monday morning 😃

Apparently only 5 Wetherspoons in the whole of the UK will be staying open for the England match

Really dont understand why we needed 16 more teams,

Sure I've read something about expanding it to 64 teams for the next world cup

FIFA won't be happy until it's all 200odd teams in it and it's pay per view everywhere.

The whole Mexico England kick off time has something of ye olde world cup chaos about it.

I have loved the efforts from the minnows, and to take Argentina to extra time is a great achievement.

Saw a great piece of wisdom from an American saying no England supporter would go to the pub at 1am. Lots of English people responded by pointing out they'd be going to the pub for 7pm

Apparently the France Paraguay game is being played at 38°c.

I think they might need more than one hydration break...

That's proper hot hot hot weather.  It's all about endurance and fitness at that sort of heat.

Watching France / Paraguay it’s difficult to say which team is the dirtier!

I really don’t get this refereeing. Dare to go near the goalkeeper during a corner and the goal is struck off, but apparently it’s fine to rattle someone’s legs from underneath them in open play.

This ref is so far out of his depth

Abysmal refereeing. But France won despite it.

Yep.

Never had this in Sunday league. Maybe I wouldn't haven't a permanent limp as I have now.

Paraguay had no cards given, possibly the most Corinthian, upstanding, sporting approach to a game we’ve ever seen. Bravo chaps!

Every World Cup needs a game like that, where a minor South American country are borderline psychotic. Normally it’s Uruguay but they went too deep too soon. Very surprised a French superstar didn’t get absolutely cemented there, you could feel it coming.

The fact that Paraguay didn’t get a single yellow in that match is absolutely ludicrous.

France got 3 cards and all they did was try and defend themselves from being repeatedly assaulted.

I hope that ref isn’t in charge of any other matches, because that was some of the worst refereeing I’ve ever seen. The other match officials were equally as bad. Absolutely farcical!

Very amusing from Paddy Power ahead of tonight. How many people are subjecting themselves to it then?

Looks like FIFA have responded to the great 'injustice' America suffered

What next? USA goals count double?

Switched on the Brazil vs. Norway build-up late, it's all been chat about England so far, Neville reckons Mexico 'will be a good warmup for whoever comes next'. Confident!

Seems they are contractually obliged to be unrealistic about England's chances. Having said that, last 4 tournaments we've significantly over-achieved in terms of results vs actual performances. I think Mexico 3-1.

It's OK because it's only on match days.

I wonder if Don will make up a prize for his mate Infantino? Or maybe he’ll award him the Congressional Medal of Honour at the same time he awards it to himself?
