I can't speak for Canadian society, but if it's anything like that in the US then there is a much greater distinction than here between the straight and narrow, where all the good kids go; and scandal and ruin where any kind of fun is. Puritan influence.

I really would like to agree that legalising cannabis is a sensible thing to do, as I understand the argument.
But after a psychotic episode followed by a breakdown from, I think, heavy use....it worries me when I see it touted as being harmless. I really don't think it is....
I'd hate for someone else to go through the pain & despair I did. Only a failed suicude attempt snapped me out of it.
Certainly not harmless but then is alcohol or tobacco? Harm reduction is the aim

I think more run of the mill considerations like driving might stand in the way of legalisation. I mean how long has it taken for drink driving to become socially-unacceptable? We're talking generations. Giving driving-whilst-stoned a massive boost doesn't sound like a good idea - plus is harder to quantify in the first place. Think it would be a real issue.
It was 20 yrs ago Garry & is well in the past. Though I can still remember the emptiness I felt at the time.

It's a debate I try to avoid TBH as it brings back feelings I don't want to recall - but sometimes sharing makes the junk easier to deal with. Maybe others might learn something who knows.
Anyway, onward & upward. I'm in a really good place now, I often think I'm the luckiest man alive with the way my life has turned out!

Drugs; they certainly serve a purpose; generally to make boring people more interesting. Hence why there's so much of it at Glastonbury. However, if you see someone who looks like this, with a spliff in hand; avoid at all costs. I couldn't give a shit about your political views, or chakra.

Been there, done most of it for long periods of time and could probably write an essay on the rights, wrongs and levels of addiction - tj would still tell me I'm wrong though 😉

Not been since about 1992, there were scallies shouting "black 'ash" and "pills" just about everywhere then.
'92 was my first year. The years blend a bit. As far as I remember no legit overnight music back then - some stuff going on in the southeast corner where the travellers were. Biggest parties were at the Joe Banana's blanket stall and off the back of a truck in the Glade. Bizarrely the Wine Bar trucks had little raves right through as well. Of the 50k capacity there were no more than a couple of thousand going through the night.
Travellers were still there but I think it was the first year the Police were actually on site but it looked like they'd been instructed not to interfere. There were rastas openly sat in a camping chair with their wares laid out in front selling. I saw a Police Land Rover make its way though a crowd with a kid walking behind shouting "E's, Whizz". There were hard drugs back then as well - they'd always have a few overdoses from people injecting in those years but you don't hear about that now despite it being 4x the size.
Proportion of Liverpudlians and Mancs back then was far higher. There was a lot more theft and the whole place felt a lot edgier (that said, there's still a lot of theft from tents on the Thursday night - met someone who'd been for the first time yesterday and they lost a wallet of cash from the tent on Thursday this year).
First time I went was 2000 ......, and I remember dealers openly walking around the campsites shouting out "HASH, TRIPS, Es, WHIZZ; GET YOUR HASH, TRIPS, Es, WHIZZ"
2000 was the year the wall came down and it was mental. Licensed capacity was c100k. I've seen actual attendance estimated at 250k.
You mean it's not like this any more? ....I'd be very surprised if drugs were MORE ubiquitous now. If that's not an oxymoron anyway.
There's been very little open dealing for many years - I think I only heard one over the whole weekend. I think security and Police come down pretty heavy on it. Not many people going around asking either. (we saw someone get picked up near the Bimble Inn on Thursday? night. He started shouting for someone to get the Police which would probably have been a bad idea. He looked properly scared to start with but I checked back and he was laughing with them later. I'm guessing confiscated and let go).
Drugs....hmmmm I reckon that in all the years going there's probs less drugs these days that ever, Searches are pretty hard when you que to get in, and there are sniffer dogs and amnesty bins all over the place.
Not my experience. More people than ever seem to be staying up late - SE Corner used to get quieter as the night went on but it was still crazy busy when I was heading home at 5ish on Saturday night and there are more late night venues across the site every year. In all the years I've been I've only ever seen sniffer dogs once and that was at Castle Cary train station. We arrived on Wednesday evening and no-one's bags were being searched. I've never seen an amnesty bin.
Searches definitely happen - we were talking to one of the security at the medical centre and she said they do a fair bit of self selection. They all have 'chav bags' apparently (no idea what's classed as a chav bag). She'd picked up some kid trying to come in with a kilo of grass. After they confiscated it he asked them if he could pick it up on his way out when he was heading home (!)
Is that the step where you go out for about an hour on Friday night then a bunch of you just head back to the house and proceed to get off your tits for 3-4 days straight?

I did come across a Policeman in full uniform on year giving that classic call as he handed out lip balm and sunscreen!
