[#11789120]

(* - totally and wholly unofficial)

On the back of various covid / mental health threads, I've wanted to do 'something' with STW for a while now. So tonight I've knocked heads with @nbt and @bunnyhop and between us we're going to do something.

The plan is for us to do a [Zoom / some other tech] video call and for nbt to host a 'pub quiz' style online quiz. After that we'll hang out and talk bollocks until the last man standing - likely me - falls over.

The inaugural run will very much be proof-of-concept to see if it works, with a view to expanding the idea out with more stuff if it proves to have legs (and doesn't turn out to be a total car-crash). I have a bunch of ideas for other things to do if this proves successful.

Attendee slots will be hard-limited because of a) technological restrictions with free software and b) we don't want to look like abject gobbins in front of half the userbase. Exactly how we're going to enforce that (first-come or registration signups?) is a point of discussion TBC.

We're looking at the evening of the 17th of this month, which by happenstance is St Patrick's day. This date isn't up for debate because screw you and arrange your own party. (-: Moreover, if we put this to a vote then it'd likely happen some time in 2023 so this is a stick in the sand, the decision has been made.

So the purpose of this post is threefold: Firstly, if you're interested, stick a note in your diary. Secondly, if you're interested, it'd be really helpful to us right now if you posted so that we can get a vague approximation of numbers. Thirdly, well... discuss.

Looking to assembling at 7:30 with a view to starting the quiz at 8. I'm told that it's a 40 minute quiz so allowing for cocking about it should be well dusted by 9pm.

Again though, this is in its infancy and we're ironing out details, this is currently all a broad brush.

Why not? I love a quiz.
And I (knowingly) know hardly anyone off here in real life so will be nice to put some faces to names

I'm interested. Should be a good laugh.

(We've been quizzing with some brainiacs to warm up, so may be in with a chance of mid-table mediocrity).

Up for it as well. Although the last online pub style quiz thing I was in that Jules hosted, he did put the wrong answers up on screen a couple of times.

Must be his advancing years. 😉

remember the CORRECT answer isn't what you know to be true as you were actually there and watched it happen, the CORRECT answer is what the quizmaster has written down on the answer sheet. Crazy-legs raises a good point though, I can't run that quiz again 😉

Thinking about it, I might make a special effort for this one and write a new round for St Patricks Day.

1) how many pints of guiness can your quizmaster drink during the quiz and remiain coherent"
2) How would you be travelling if you arrived at Shannon from abroad?
3) wht have they got an airport called sharon anyway? Why not amanda or victoria
4) it's nice and tasty this guiness isn't it
5) who fancies another one
6) why has the room rotated so the light fitting is now sticking out of the wall?

Just a thought; £5 donation to STW entry fee?

Let's see how the test event goes, it might sink like a stone. If you enjoy it (and I really hope you do and think you will) then there's nothing to stop you donating to STW (or the charity of your choice / the quizmaster's suggestion).

Waves to Pook and crazylegs.

I'm in, but please be aware when it comes to quizzes I'm the most competitive woman on the planet.

Oh dear I'll have to cut nbt's hair (what's left of it).

Yeah, we discussed this (entry fee, not nbt's hair). We both felt that it'd be preferable to suggest a charitable donation rather than any sort of mandatory fee which might be a barrier to entry. And of course, free members might like to consider this another value-added from the site and a 12-month digital subscription isn't very expensive...

In any case, in my head at least this first outing is very much a beta test. Things will go wrong. I'm expecting it to either be massively under-subscribed or massively over-subscribed. (-: So adding money into the mix just sets unrealistic expectations and adds pressure.

Yeah, go on, I'm in, assuming we have working broadband by then.

when it comes to quizzes I’m the most competitive woman on the planet.

Having seen Bunnyhop at a very actual pub quiz, never mind a very virtual one, I can confirm this to be the case.

Cool.

If I get a place, I'll donate. And buy the organisers a pint. And that's not bribery!

Who are you going with? I know when No_discerning_taste lived over in Mellor she found 4g broadband to be more reliable and much faster than landline

The landline broadband is coming from Shell, we're expecting about 7mb. 4G may well be an option, we'll see how good/bad the landline stuff is first.

If you're in their catchment area, I can highly recommend https://b4rn.org.uk/postcode-checker/ (full disclosure: one of the founders is a friend of mine).

I spoke to the overlords, and they agree don't be giving STW any donations for this! Have some fun, share the love with bunnyhop, nbt and Cougar or whoever they like to support. If you do want a thing that's already set up in the name of STW to track how lovely you all are there's the World Bicycle Relief pot: https://worldbicyclereliefuk.enthuse.com/cf/singletrack-supporting-world-bicycle-relief

Oh. Yeah, thanks Hannah, it didn't even enter my head to enquire as to what STW might prefer. Idiot boy.

Stock my name in the hat too.

I don't know anything, or rather I do know everything but some of what I know may differ from your reality.

I once won a pub quiz while working away from home. The purpose was a big joint of beef which didn't please the b&b lady when she found it in the sink in the morning until I told her it was a present to her. I got treated to a today dinner with the family that night.

We once won the pub quiz in the Coylumbridge Hilton. THe prize was the £1 per head entry fees - we got about £60. Paid for all the drinks that night and a lovely meal at the Dalrachney Lodge the following evening. Was a bit dodgy driving back to our caravan at the campsite in Aviemore as it had started snowing while we were in thw quiz and had put down about 3" of snow. I'm glad Mrs NBT doesn't drink and is a good driver as I had had a ferw social beverages...

Nah, you didn't need to ask, I just spotted someone suggesting donations to us and figured I'd divert that good feeling to another cause.

Hannah – would it be ok to give some funds to mountain rescue (many on here are members)?

@bunnyhop you can choose whoever you like! - though I might have words if it was a Piers Mortimer Statue funder 🙂

The brainiacs quiz has been raising money for Trussell trust (over £12k since lockdown 2 on a fortnightly basis). Fair Share or a bike charity as Hannah suggested would also be good.

TJ - that's my predicament too.

Perchy - yes I too am looking forward to the Jackie Weaver moment. Do you think he'll wear the blond wig and we'll all flounce.

Friday afternoon bump. I suppose I'd better get a quiz ready, or at least choose a quiz I've already got and add a "St Patrick's day" round 😀
