When you look at the number of calories in a burger and chips, it's almost the entire daily calorie requirement for a woman

You need more cheese and bacon in your burgers if they're failing to hit your daily calorific limit.

There's a school in Scotland where they take the kids out each day and they have to do laps around the grounds until they have done a mile

Its a good idea but a simpler solution that benefits more people would be to get a control over car(nage) culture beloved of stw so they could walk to school.

I think Ninfan has been very selective in his choice of media sources as usual. Check out the URL before you take his links seriously.

Edit to add OECD link: OECD on overweight in England.

Indeed, or cycle to school and after school.

However the mile walk/run is something the school has control over, whereas we have been looking for a way to stop pedestrian deaths since the car was invented.

Certainly cooking casseroles and stews where everything goes in the [s]oven[/s] slow-cooker will reduce gas or electricity consumption.

ftfy!

Our (electric) oven cooks us out of house and home if not careful. We budget for jacket potatoes and pre-cook them in microwave to save energy/cost.

The slow-cooker was a great investment.

It's not just STW wedded to car-culture, it's the national pastime and lifestyle choice. There was a negative perception when I was a kid that adults on bicycles (for transport, not road-racing) were dirt poor or had driving bans. It was just strange to see a grown-up on a 'toy'. This attitude still crops up in social media attacks on cycling/cyclists. Walking and cycling (for transport/utility) in the UK is an anomaly reserved for the 'far-out' fringe or 'eco-freaks'. I'm sure the 'dirt poor' label is still active in some parts. Whatever it is, it's most often a negative stereotype compared to car-users (normalised majority)

Wherever I've worked I've been the only car-less commuter. And only one of my friends commutes by bicycle. There were two but the other passed his driving test and now forgets that he can cycle 2 miles ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, we are a bit ahead, but it's not like this isn't a significant problem also affecting most of the western world

as a pretty map, it doesn't look so bad, however the rankings make for a more sobering picture

WHO Data on Prevalence of Obesity (BMI ? 30kg/m2) (the data ninfan's picture is based on)

UK ranked 32nd
France 65th
Italy 88th
Sweden 92nd
Germany 94th

Its no coincidence that countries with tighter control over food companies and with greater pride in cooking have lower obesity rates.

Much packaged food is intended to be addictive with high fat, sugar and salt levels which our bodies crave. In the UK the food companies get free reins to push whatever junk they want. Other countries they do not. similarly other countries also offer much better environments for cycling.

How can that map of Ninfan's be based on WHO data when the 2015 WHO figures don't match. For example, the WHO gives 15% of adults for France and that tallies with OECD and CIA data. Just checking two countries The UK is always around 26% and France around 15%.

womenshouldnoteatburgerandchips

I don't eat burger and chips precisely because they are unhealthy, unsatisfying, overly processed. and loaded with calories.
