FB purity

Wasn't aware of that. Just installed it on Safari. Took a bit of fiddling with extensions to get it working but looks good now. No stupid ads for crap I don't want or posts FB thinks I might like to see. Just need the same for Twitter.

I just deactivated mine earlier this week.

It made me sad, because Tim's Twitter Listening Parties was a big part of keeping me sane through Covid. It wasn't always bad.

It's not just individuals leaving X - this is an extract from an email (dated yesterday) from the British Trust for Ornithology. They appear to have spotted a trend:-
"We’ve recently shifted our focus away from Twitter/X and across to Bluesky. This is because we (and many others) have seen a massive drop in reach and engagement on Twitter/X, likely a result of the numbers of people leaving the platform and a change in the algorithm that promotes or demotes content. You may have seen reports that the Twitter/X algorithm now demotes posts that link to science stories elsewhere – such as in journals"

Hopefully it's another drop in the drip...drip...drip

Had FB purity on my laptop for ages & deleted the FB app off my phone last week, tempted to check & msg any FB friends that I don't otherwise have contact details for and then bin it off completely. Never order from Amazon unless I get given a gift card from work & I've never signed up to twitter or any similar sites, but then I do like a bit of boycotting 🙂

Years ago I was boycotting Nestlé & in the middle of a supermarket shop my youngest loudly pronounced "but I don't care about starving babies"

Sorry, playing catchup.

My 2p: I haven't ragequit anywhere, yet. But this is a drum I've been beating for a long time now. If the reason you're quitting is for moral reasons then fair enough, elsewhere today I was discussing my lack of patronage to Wetherspoons. But if it's because of content, take control of your feeds. Caveat: this mostly applies to browser / desktop apps as I avoid poking at a phone screen wherever possible when there's a full-sized keyboard a foot away.

Facebook, there's FB Purity as other people have said, though I don't use it myself. Instead I have

bookmarked. It reverts your view to chronological rather than algorithmic.

I’m wondering if all user experiences are not the same for FB.
...
So if you’re been rolled over to the spammy version theres a ‘feeds’ option on the left of the page (browser) or Botton right corner (app) and clicking that gives you something tolerable

That's exactly what the "Feeds" button does, it redirects to that URL. So in using the bookmark instead of the button you avoid that initial page load of bollocks and go directly to the feed.

Twitter has two columns, "For you" (default of course) and "Following." Switch to Following, the content you get is what you've chosen to consume.

As for the rest:

Bluesky I'm on, it feels like a beta product, but I suppose that's no bad thing in a way. It was a wasteland until a mate circulated a list of "InfoSec people to follow" with my name on it and I got about a hundred followers in about 20 minutes. I couldn't be arsed following them all back so most of my feed is B3ta's Fesshole.

Mastodon is an odd one. It is probably "the answer" to Twitter but it is relatively complicated to get your head around which may be a barrier to entry for some.

WhatsApp I use extensively, but I don't see a problem with this. It's end-to-end encrypted messaging with contacts tied to a phone number. Someone said earlier...

Just use SMS? I mean, I use WhatsApp like everyone else, but I could just SMS people instead, all contracts come with unlimited SMS these days so it’s still free?

... which is all well and good on a phone but a fat lot of use on the desktop.

I'm surprised Discord hasn't been shown more love on here. I'm late to the party but it could probably replace all of the above.

I never bothered with Instagram. I looked at when it first came out, figured that it was a platform for making perfectly serviceable photos look shit, so didn't see the point.

Tiktok, Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts, I'm of the opinion that all short-form video services are serving hot garbage for teenagers with ADHD. Change my mind. Facebook in particular is just odd, I keep getting suggestions for "epic fail" videos where the thumbnail is some lass with improbably large breasts and nips like coathooks.

LinkedIn. Billed as Facebook for Professionals, it's been useful but that's slowly enshittifying itself now too. Connection requests from regional sales managers without so much as a "hello" first? Do one.

Have I missed any? I'm still on Mono which was essentially social media since before that term existed. Hell, it was social media before the public World Wide Web existed.

They might be the ones who "like" my tweets.

Does seem like Zuk is discovering the consequences of a complete free for all on Meta. FAAFO, as usual.

Call me cyclical but advertisers shying away from twitter and now Facebook will last as long as ket within easy reach of musk. The tech bros have shown their real faces and I strongy suspect that there's a lot of traction amongst society at large for that.

Saw a report that Zuck settled a lawsuit about suspending Cheeto's account with 25M USD. Apparently this settlement was the blocker to Zuck and FB being brought back into fold.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c79d74nppvpo

It's a scam. Honestly fsck social media.

Just a snippet from the BBC News story about that settlement:

Mr Zuckerberg has said he expects all glasses to be replaced by smart glasses within a decade, a prediction he repeated on Wednesday.

I think he's been smoking / snorting whatever Elon's usually on.

The 25 million is a downpayment on getting getting a law passed in the US to require glasses to be replaced with MetaGlasses. He can even offer to monitor the feeds for loyalty to the supreme leader as well.
