This video appeared on my fb timeline this morning. It may be doing the rounds, so forgive me if you have seen it before; but it really is worth every second.

I bloody LOVE this stuff. ๐Ÿ˜€

Tick for later

Also a huge fan of this kind of stuff and books by the likes of Alex Bellos and Marcus du Sautoy.

You should check out the Numberphile channel on Youtube. Pron for number-nerds.*

Cheers. Knew the maths (being a computer geek) but didn't know that the Egyptians used to do that too.

I also quite like Lattice Multiplication, which lets you multiply two really big numbers even though you only know your times tables up to 9.

Saw that chap with the plate on tour with a couple of others. Trying to remember what they were called.

If you're not really a "maths" person, FFTs are quite confusing, but watch this vid, about a mechanical FFT device and suddenly, it becomes a lot easier to understand!

That's ace. Who'd have thought a cold blooded assassin is also a maths genius.

BTW, that first video on binary maths and it's application to computers misses one rather important fact! It says "no times tables are necessary) but then shows the requirement to double numbers, which you might think requires tables, but in fact it doesn't!

Because in binary or Base2, each number in the series 1,2,4,8 etc is already twice as large as the preceding one, so if you have a binary number, you can double it by simply "shifting" it leftwards, and halve it by shifting it right (so called bit shifting, which is very quick for digital logic to do)

i.e. look at the following series, 20,10,5 in decimal, shown in (8bit)binary:

20 is 00010100
10 is 00001010
5 is 00000101

you can see the same pattern, just shifted right or left!

I love this stuff too. Did A-level maths but never pursued it beyond that. Anyone who's interested should read the excellent "Fermat's last theorem" by Simon Singh.

And / or his equally excellent book about the maths of the simpsons.

There's a quote in one of those books that I can't remember exactly, along the lines of: to glimpse this world is to understand that there is a magnificent beauty in this world that is only truly visible to a handful of the greatest mathematicians.

Max torque that's really neat. Not done the videos but have a geeky fascination with maths (the type with numbers not letters).

I'd be more impressed if you could tell me how I've never had the foggiest idea when it comes to numbers.
I haven't a clue. Even basic stuff.
Any kids out there? Learn your maths. ๐Ÿ™‚

Have you ever been tested for dyscalculia?

Coincidentally, a mate just recommended this to me.

Not looked at it yet (or the videos) but thought I'd share as it sounded on topic.

Set the FFT machine vids to "Watch Later"

As well as the Numberphile channel mentioned earlier in the thread, several of the personal channels of those that feature in Numberphile are also worthy of subbing.

This is pretty good. Manages to explain things in a way that makes me think I've understood it until about 5 minutes after I've read it.
