I fancy Shakalakaboomboom & Synchronised, who I backed at the Gold Cup. Might take a punt on Chicago Grey.

I've picked 2 at random, a fiver each way on both Chicago Grey and Swing Bill.

Which one trips over, breaks it's leg then has to be put down after lying at the bottom of a jump in agony?

I'll have that one.

Paddypower are doing top 5, and a £20 free bet if you spend £20. Also paying out the higher of the starting and placed odds, which is sometimes nice.

State of Play, West End Rocker and Chicago Grey here, because I like the names.

Good site to allow you to compare your options if you still want to decide which bookie to use.
Its more relevant if you're going EW on an outsider, some big variations.

So I'm sitting relaxing after my rideout today, bergerall on TV c'ept this neddieridinlark..

Tut.

Still harping on about how "special" Red Rum was, still bringing out some old folk in sheepskin coats/silk waistcoats/shiny ties who have nothing more to say than "oh he's trianed hard this year"

(Liverpudlian accent donned) "Tosh init"

Why make it so dramatic? it's yer normal BBC Docu drab all said in a "Tony Blair" stylee.. Stands back, open arms, big grin, head tilted to one side..yadda yadda.

Ah well, one of mine unseated his rider, then another horse fell on the rider, then my other horse fell on that horse! Great race though...

Two put down and that was supposed to be the safest course to date. Should be stopped.

They whip their boot most of the time....how exciting was that and a girlie jockey in 3rd. How come so Magnus of them are Irish though?? No one backed the winner.....

Whether it's deemed OK or not, I don't know.

Can you imagine if Crufts did an annual dog race where one or more of the dogs gets fatally injured every year?

As much as I admire the speed and bravery of horse and rider, I can't understand why this is allowed to go on.

Must admit I backed the winner yesterday at 40-1 and made quite a few quid - but won't be watching or betting on it again. Youngest girl was almost in tears by the time the race was half way done!

Because horses run and jump, and sometimes they fall... Not just at the nationals. Banning the race because it kills horses would end up with just less horses, not with loads more happy horses not dying- and a top class racehorse leads a generally good life.

Loose horses continue round the national course of their own choice, remember- there's not one horse in the field that doesn't want to run and jump.

that would be a pretty insane course you'd need to injure dogs to such an extent the only option is to put them down.

Must be a sad feeling going home with an empty horsebox tonight. The way Syncronised got spooked and parted company with his jockey just before the start - almost like he had a premonition of what was about to happen....

It's an interesting debate - but I firmly share Northwinds' view on the matter.

The horse I bet on kept falling over...

...but then he scored to win the match, and won me £30.

If it was a game of Pass The Pigs you'd be the winner.

ah right so is that like the Gladiatorial slaves let quite a good life till they died...is that sort of good life?
Can you name another event that kills the participants at such a great rate?
I very much doubt that horse racing and breeding would cease if the national stopped ..have you anything to support the assertion it would lead to less horses?

Yes they have a herd mentality but you will be arguing the lemmings are choosing to jump of cliffs [ no one is riding them after all] or individual animals are choosing to stampede next...it snot a great argument tbh.
i am not sure how you support your assertion that the animals want to do the event but I think I can safely put up a case that it is not informed consent

Greyhound racing if you want to follow the Crufts thread. Thousands are put down every year but no one seems to mind.

just had a quick google and the injury rate of horses in races in the US is 0.125%, no idea how that compares to the UK.

The horses are put down usually as the injury is not one that the horse can recover from, i.e. a broken leg, it's pretty much impossible to rest a horse and let it recover from that.

Also the owner loses the animal, which is probably quite difficult as they do actually care for them, and also the cost of the horse as racehorses are unisurable.

Gutted, my in laws have spent the last 3 days at Aintree with Paul Nichols (winning trainer) who claimed ho horse had les chance of winning than a dead 3 leggedd donkey.... I obviously have the worst best inside line going! I think they'll be having a good party tonight!

Cruel / not cruel? Hope only vegans are complaining.

Logic? The horses are bred to race- less racing and less money in racing would inevitably mean less horses bred to race. Making the assumption here that you don't just want the national banned, since it's obviously not the only dangerous race- just that it's the one most in the public eye.

i am not sure how you support your assertion that the animals want to do the event

Never said anything of the sort 😕

Why is the risk of less horses being bred to run in racing being given as a good reason to perpetuate the sport?

And I don't buy all the guff about owners loving the animals - they love the money they earn them in prizes, shares and stud. Have little sympathy for owners when one dies on them.
