Rachael Stirling…

Oi, get in the queue, sunshine.

It’ll be a long queue and an even longer wait. And Guy Garvey is likely to be rather disapproving.

But still, Rachel Stirling… 🥰🫠

Had a bit of a thing for her mum, as well…🥰🫠

I’ll be honest here, I’ve never actually watched an episode of Detectorists, mainly due to lack of time, other things getting in the way, etc, but there’s been so much talk about it, so I watched tonight’s special, and I’ll be going back and watching the earlier shows.

It got better. Anyone else watched Ghosts? That is superbly moving in some of it’s storylines.

Very different in many ways, but both Ghosts and Detectorists share a lack of fear for mixing up pure silliness, cleverer and more subtle humour, and genuine humanity and pathos without making a fuss about doing so.

Of course, Ghosts also has the benefit of creating Robin - possibly the greatest comedy character around right now. But then, Detectorists balances that out with Crook's directorial fliair and eye for detail.

That really was special.

The Alice Roberts cameo especially so.

Bravo

A bit disappointing, shame as I was really looking forward to it.
They tried to cram too much in 😔

First 10mins and I'm thinking oh no.
Then it all comes back together they should have done 2 45min shows instead of the random Tina Turner love in.
The cast is so we'll put together that having lance act strange with Andy really put a spin on it.

I just rewatched it and enjoyed it ten times as much as I did last night, I think I was worried it'd be a bit rubbish and it'd ruin the whole thing for me so I was watching with a slightly over critical eye, I think it was spot on to be fair.

I'm local to the area it was filmed so it did make me laugh when they ran from the railway station back to Lance's. I can't see either of them managing seven and a half miles and certainly not in five seconds!
Also, the train they got on to go to London was on its way to Lowestoft.😁

Wow expected a bit more from the Dr Alice Roberts cameo. She was my uni lecturer over 20 years ago and everyone fancied her. Fav thing of all the Christmas viewing though and seeing lovely British summertime lifts my spirits every time.

For Russel did drink from the holy grail and Lo, both his body and squash game was revived.

He trimmed his beard too...

Watched it last night, and I'm a bit underwhelmed. Might rewatch.

It was rather cringeworthy in places, like it had a different writer.
Apart from Rachael, who was perfect in every scene.

I was pretty disappointed, it was so downbeat. The dream cottage was burnt down, Becky was in tatters, Lance and Andy were at loggerheads and even the great ending to series 3 was spoilt because the gold wasn't theirs after all. Dreaded watching it and wished I hadn't now. Mackenzie should have left it where it was.

Really there was enough material there which would have been better explored over a whole series.

Well this is a thread of two halves

"It's shite"

Was always likely to be a polarising endeavour this.

Truth is it was probably better left as is with us thinking that it was a happy ending rather than all the drivel (holy grail?) we had to watch the other night.

Rachael Stirling not withstanding it was not great.

There are those for whom it would be great regardless of content, character progression or narrative continuity.

There was a program yeas ago on BBC2 called That's Life or similar.( I know it's not called that, I'm fishing for pedants) Really a fantastic piece. Daniella Nardini and that bloke who (literally) murdered the zombie franchise were in it, anyway they did a follow up thing years later.

It was painful. Some things are of their time. And should be left as is not belittled as a 'Special'

Anyway did anyone watch the live Cyclocross tonight? Now that was proper TV.😁

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very maudlin in places and lots of references to lost opportunities, renewal and hope. Pretty good for this time of year both culturaly and meteorologically.

It rather depends on whether you subscribe to one thing or the other -

Gold falling out of a tree and a dream bid on a house...

Or

... the gold not belonging to you, your house burning to the ground...

Shit happens, does it not?

There is literally no reason that the shit that happens should be good shit.

It occurred to me that as the whole episode was so negative, they just might be leaving the door open for a more upbeat 4th series...

Imagine the Bru-ha-ha.

Of course they were going to find the bloody Holy Grail. Archaeologists; hidden treasure...The whole thing has been infused with Hollywood tropes, and this is just the obvious place to go.

Loved it.

As I said already,I felt they tried to crow bar in too much detail.
The stories and performances(IMO) really work best in a series.
Some of the scenes just came across as a bit flat(or rushed),and I know it's hard, but that kid playing Stan should have spent some more time at the acting circus.

But Andy did a bit of maturing took a job as an archaeologist and with her new found carpentry skills I'd think the cottage is no longer to be sold. They both seemed in a better place at the end.

Like they gave him a part as a favour. Kind of takes you out of the moment when you're thinking 'is his acting supposed to be that bad?'

It was, ok.

The final episode camaraderie with the dirt sharks was retrospectively ruined, in fact a lot of what made the final season and especially the last couple of episodes was torn up but didn't really serve to develop the characters or story arc. it set them all back for little gain.

It was as beautifully shot and well acted as ever, and certainly an enjoyable hour. But not a classic

Felt a bit like a whole series crammed into an hour, so a bit heavy on plot and less of the slow paced, lingering camerawork.

Though I am the kind of person who tends to love the first series of shows then get a bit frustrated when the plot takes over.

Dectectorists being a prime example, where the first series was more like a vibe, how the thing looked and bumbled along was the best thing about it.

Or as Mackenzie Crook himself put it; "a love letter to the countryside". This episode had a bit less of that and leant more into kitchen sink drama or soap opera territory.

Life, huh.

They both seemed in a better place at the end.

Well put. And not the better places that we (or they) expected. Better in small(er) ways?

Thanks for the help Klunk but I think I will pass on that one.

It looks like someone exploded inside that.

My boss told me that I remind him of Lance once so it is tempting to go the whole hog

Binge watched all three series over the last week. It’s charming and twee but in a really good way. Gives me the same warm, fuzzy feeling of nostalgia that Wurzel Gummidge does. Like a memory of summertimes that didn’t exist. Mr Crook is a great director
