Man of the series it has to be Andy Strauss for all the runs and winning that toss on thursday

man of the match it can only be Stuart Broad

So... I'm back, had a lovely ride in the English sun ๐Ÿ™‚

Two decisive moments today, Ponting getting runout - direct hit from Flintoff, you'd have to have rated that a 1 in 10 chance at best... and Clarkes 'runout', whatever happened to benefit of the doubt? ๐Ÿ™„

Ah well... you can't be bowled out for 160 and expect to win a Test really, Friday was a catastophic day for Aussie cricket, probably the worst I've seen in my life especially given the importance of the game ๐Ÿ™

I honestly feel, and I think most English fans would agree, we were the better team overall this series, not by a considerable margin but I do think the stats would back me up on this, however the decisive moments just didn't go our way when we needed them to...

I think Strauss sums it up best:

"When we were bad, we were very bad but when we were good, we were good enough..."

Congrat's to England... I swear though, the first 'fairweather supporter' who tries to rub it in, I may just be forced to club them... ๐Ÿ˜†

Lanesra, how do you want your filthy lucre? ๐Ÿ™‚

That only exists when there's doubt, hence the phrase! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think you'll find that one stat doesn't back you up on this.....
2-1

See that? 2 is more than 1, you know....! ๐Ÿ˜‰

A great series, played in great spirit. Great stuff all round, and a fine example of why test cricket really is the best form of the game! Well played Australia, but just not good enough, I'm afraid!

true enough, and that's the only one that matters in the end... ๐Ÿ™

eh??? get to ****. You were better in two tests, we were better in three. The main difference between to 2 sides was that when you were bad england took full advantage and when we were bad you squandered your chances. How many decisive spells of bowling did the aussies produce away from headingley? The bottom line is that when it really counted you fell to pieces. At times your bowling attack was the worst I've seen from an australian team in 25 years. Your batsmen flattered to deceive and 2 pivotal collapses matter more than how many centuries you score.

As for it not mattering to the english, I can't speak for anyone else but in my household there is absolutely nothing sweeter than an ashes triumph, not even a football world cup.

That would require there to be some doubt. It was just a very good decision. ๐Ÿ˜›

But not when it counted, so it means nothing really.

Such bad losers!!!!

IS it really England or South Africa tormenting Australia in the Ashes?

After England's latest South African-born hero Jonathan Trott made 119 on debut in the fifth Test, it seems the Rainbow Nation is more of a factor than the Mother Country in this Ashes.

Statistics don't lie and the three ex-South Africans - captain Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen and Trott - sit on top of England's batting averages in the series.

Strauss is the Ashes top run-scorer and has averaged 52.6, injured Pietersen averaged 38 after the first two Tests and Trott averages 80 after his debut Test. And another former South African, wicketkeeper Matt Prior, isn't far away with an Ashes average of 32.62.

Between them the four South Africans have made 1048 runs this series - more than 40 per cent of England's total.

Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has called for the Ashes 2009 series to be extended to a best of seven contest, instead of the current five test series. โ€œIt has been such a closely fought contest that it would be a real shame to end it now.โ€ said Ponting in his post-game interview.

Uh, best three out of five! No, five out of seven!

Thanks for the link to the Aussie newspaper article - it is such fun to see how bad losers they are (at least some of them - psychle appears to have been in England long enough to get used to the idea of losing, and how to do it well).

In the meantime, somebody needs to rehash this rugby one:

the australia team is made up from immigrants, why are they not using indigenous peoples? a team of aboriginals should be playing.

I like the way they mention Petersen, who only played two tests? And Strauss who has lived in England since he was 6.

Well they had to do something to beef up their whine, given that we'd still have won even without the runs of any Saffers apart from Strauss, who like you say was brought up here. Like I say, it just adds to the amusement to see they're that upset!

No it isn't. Ponting is from Tazzie though, which might as well be another planet ๐Ÿ™‚

I loved that article too, proper sour grapes.

With the possible exception of Symonds, who is of Aborigine (sp?) descent then?
