I think I like the idea - slow, cheap, economical to use. Do you?

Nothing wrong with that, probably fits the bill for many motorists, just a shame that car ownership generally (in peoples minds) reflects status.

Scenario 1. Young man in Porche, my customer asks if it's the boss. No I said he just cleans it.

Scenario 2. A rep commented about a particulary fussy and rightly demanding customer. Then commented on the old **** heap he was driving. That's Paddy Hopkirk I said, rep, huh who ??????.

I'd drive one.

Well as a 2cv owner for over 20 years I wouldn't have a problem driving one. However the 50mpg fuel consumption really isn't very good for such a tiny car. I'd be expecting something like at least high 60's for a car so small.

Its going to cost £4,500 here and thoughtfully they have added leather and chrome surrounds on the dash. The quality of the leather will be questionable but why would anyone buy one of these? Post-first owner they will be £1,400 though as they'll depreciate horribly.
Nasty little things. £1,400 must be very expensive in India as well.

Gary_M my first car was a Dyane 6 in maroon. Loved it. I'd have another tomorrow but they have all rusted to death 🙁

I thought the main problem with it is that theres almost no crash protection whatsoever?? Would it pass the european safety tests??

Other small cars like the Smart and Toyota Aygo are actually quite safe.

but they have all rusted to death

Hora a whole lot of 2cv/dyanes have been restored. Mine is restored with galvanised chassis and has no rust at all. Very good examples can be picked up now.

Just the same as any new car then.

Buy a £16000 Focus, and 3 years down the line it's £6000 (I know that because we just paid the £6000) so that's 10 grand down the drain for someone.
Buy that, throw it away after 3 years.....

Find me another new car that looses less money.... Go on, do it!
🙂

Focus is made in big numbers yet will always find a buyer as they are popular for a reason. That Nano has alot of more capable competitors though who all do the same job but safer with established dealers etc. Its going to go the way of the 3 wheelers etc....and this is coming from someone who LOVES little gay cars 😆

I like the fact 'The Sun' point out the three wheel nuts rather than 4 being an indicator of its no-frills nature.

Just like those Smart cars built by Mercedes then?

Now that would be REALLY environmentally friendly.

Loved my Dyane, horrible faded red colour but a fantastic car. Had it for a few years until the floor gave way (put my foot through it), then discovered that it was being held to gether faith and a bit of rubber matting. The horror of trying to get the thing up Milnrow hill on the M62 againts the wind, could of pushed it quicker. Was gutted when it went, all those climbing trips to the Lakes living at the back of the car for days at a time. I was skint and it cost me almost nothing. Oh happy days. Who sells restored versions then?

I wonder if the price hike from £1400 to £4000 isn't to make it good enough to meet the EC rules. A year on, it'll be about £2500 max. Less than many of our bikes. Why not!

*IF* it's reliable and cheap to insure, then it won't lose much value. At 4,500 new, then there isn't that much money wrapped up in it anyway, which makes it more desirable still.
See how it performs, but it already has a sort of cult thing going on because of it's quirkiness. I find it strange that you are worried about depreciation as I'd have thought one of the advantages of this is the lack of worry of depreciation. If it lasts 3 years, then the worst you'll lose is 4,500 which is pretty good going really.

Oh, and that report says it's increase in price is to meet our safety standards...

Yeh the best thing to do would be to buy one in reasonable condition with a galvanised chassis and then get it restored if you wanted to.

Its tripled in price? That would have to be a redesign/rebuild IMO to justify that price increase.
What narks me is the likes of the Smart fortwo and Toyota IQ- they had the opportunity to offer a basic/stripped down modern successor to the 2CV as a viable town-only car for a low low price. Ok, I understand that Daimler have always made a loss on the Smart however Toyota are blatantly trying to plug into the faux-environmental-Howies types. 10k for a car with a 3cylinder engine found in the Aygo/PAS- such a missed opportunity. Sad really 🙁

I would have thought it needed to be cheaper to work. If you're walking around with 4k in your pocket you'd have to be seriously obsessed with NEW cars to get one of those instead of say a 3 year old Seat Ibiza diesel which is a proper car. Not only that but when Ford Kas or Aygos etc are only what, £6k, it seems daft.

Must resist must resist...my love of small cars is well documented... I almost took my old Aygo onto the 'Ring...thankfully my girlfriend talked me out of it (I couldnt get insurance on the day) 🙁

I'd better pass this one by the missus though first, pre-warm her up. If I just turned up with a 2CV I don't know which way she would flip

The article claims it produces fewer emissions that a 100cc motorbike. Now I know bikes are bloody aweful emissions-wise (size for size with car engines) but I'll be amazed if that is true.

I'd not want to be in an accident in one, anyone seen euro-ncap ratings for it?

It's not going to really benefit anyone, a good cheap car can be had second hand for £200, surely no-one in the UK is going to want to buy an ugly, slow, rediculously small car brand new when they can have a better car, that does more to the gallon while allowing you to breathe inside it, with a couple of years on it for a fraction of the price.

£4500 for a piece of crap that wouldnt win an argument in a crash with a cyclist, never mind another car OR a 3yr old Pug/Citreon/Ford etc etc which has lost most of its depreciation and can give many many years service. £4500 gets you a lot of small motor these days without resorting to crap.

This thing reminds me of those cheap scooters/motorbikes people were buying from abroad. Looked like a motorbike, even rode like a motorbike for a while but before 12mths were up they were found to be pale immitations of the real thing.

So it's not £1400 at all then.
£1400 for that is fine for a town or second runabout, but £4500!

oldgit when I read about it in autocar I thought 'oh looks like a starter/hello etc'. Then when I read further down I almost fell off my chair laughing.

Im thinking its probably safer/better to catch a bus. I hate buses, I wont even go near one.

Basic Citroen C1 = £6295 new.

Why anyone would buy a Tata Nano NEW, is beyond me. Although saying that, you do see the odd City Rover about, so there are people out there with no idea whatsoever.

Good for ... driving around cities I suppose.

The trouble with cars designed for that purpose is that they're not as good as non-car alternatives!

A car is a device for carrying bicycles to places that are too far to pedal.

Appearance, speed, comfort, safety, etc are secondary characteristics 😀

Price should be such that it does not interfere with one's bike bling buying habit

You're spoilt! I still remember driving one of those at the age of 8. It makes me certain Tata Nano is going to be an ok drive.

Surely better off buying 2nd hand? For that money you would get something decent.
