You might not want to read this if you're over 38 or so.

The 50% Rule

This is a good standard to follow. The average person lives to be about 75 years old. So if you're less than 38 and have more than half of your life left, the odds are that, for instance, the funniest joke you'll ever hear in your life is one you haven't heard yet. It's just statistics. Odds are you also haven't yet...

...met the girl you'll love the most;

...met your best friend;

...heard your favorite album;

...started the best job you'll ever have;

...read the best book;

...seen the best movie or played the coolest video game;

...found the hobby you're most interested in;

...had the best sex;

...had the most original, mind-blowing idea;

...met the dumbest person you'll ever meet;

...or seen the stupidest haircut.

You can make your own list. Look around your room, look around your life. If you're less than 38, the sheer odds are that the future holds a more awesome version of everything you see.

I'm 47, you are about 12, judging from the available evidence.

Cheers that has actually just cheered me up quite a bit! Had a rubbish last couple of days, moping about my ex, and that has just changed my perspective on things. Even if it is just a crap email forward...

Pretty sure I've already found the hobby mind, but will gladly take any improvements in the other categories!

if i'd been sad enough to post rubbish like that on the internet on a friday night rather than being out on the razz or riding when i was younger than 38 i hope someone would have taken me aside and kicked some sense into me

Odds are you also haven't....

Nuhuh. The probability that I would do all those things within my first 38 years are equal to the probability that I will do them in my last 38 years. In fact, the probability that I would do them all on the day of my birth (ability not-withstanding), is exactly equal to the probability that I would do them on my death day.

Although, I will agree that as time goes on, I meet more and more people who confirm the last two.

It does say less, rather then equal, and you're barely concious of what's going on for the first few years.

Oh well, if 1 person liked it..

Maybe I'm feeling my age, having taken my three children out this evening and bought beer for them all to drink with their meal...

Jesus, and I've still got T-shirts older than any of them.

Right time, right place I suppose.

99 times out of 100 I'd immediately delete any crap like that too...

And yeah, I have been better...

EDIT: Or maybe it's just the fact I'm younger than 38 that put a smile on my face, you grumpy old gits! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Samuri has it.

The OP ignores many, many variables. You meet hundreds of people at school; you're more active when younger; you're more open to new ideas when younger; and so on.

Eg, my "best" friends I've known since college at least, if not school. Suggesting that statistically I'll know my best friend for 30 years sidesteps the fact that it's far more likely I'll know them for 60.

We really should have a thread for timeless posts like this one.

It is a pretty poor post from a self proclaimed mathematician. It's full of holes statistically.

Still plenty of time to learn to read at a normal speed then.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And it wasn't an email, which is probably why I paid it more attention, I just thought it was nice, that's all. Clearly you lot don't approve, and for this, I'm not sorry at all.

If you posted that with the thought 'there's hope for me yet', there isn't.
