We need a combo of: El Nino to subside (which it will do/Is already doing) and the jet stream to move to the north. This will drag a high pressure system that hangs about in the mid-Atlantic just north of the Azores to block the flow of the low pressure systems, and squeeze the low pressure system that hangs about just to the south of Iceland further to the polar regions.
It won't last forever, weather systems never do. Just be relived we're not living though the Little Ice Age

I experience this too; I find it fascinating how other people perceive it totally differently – it has most definitely been very wet for a very long time.
It may be because I am outside a lot in my free time. Cycling increases this, especially if not being able to ride gravel, as it’s mud! And a lot of dog walking in the countryside = a lot of mud. For those that don’t remember the weather being so dire, I suspect they spend a lot more time languishing on the sofa.
Yep, my partner remembers last summer as blissfully warm in June and the couple of days she had with friends outdoors were just "normal summer weather" A lot of us are out every weekend, and there's some evidence that suggests that weather follows somewhat of a of 7 day cycle, and that if it rains, it does rain more in the afternoon. So if you a biker that rides in the afternoon on the same day each week that coincides with the weather cycle...
As I recall, 20 and 21 were extraordinarily long and dry summers, 22 was similar, 23 started well but lost it's way around the end of June. It's been raining ever since.
20, 21 and 22 were the anomalies, normal service has now resumed (although a bit on the wet side)
Like most of you, I'm so fed up with this weather, so when a spare place came up on our club tour to Italy I grabbed it, looking forward to a bit of sunny, dry, warm riding. Just looked at the forecast for the day we arrive:

The Atlantic has warmed up considerably. Climate change and El Nino. This produces energy, this energy spins into saturated low pressure systems that track across the Atlantic one after the other by a southerly locked jet stream.
I thought climate change was supposed to weaken and push the jet stream further North giving us a climate more like central and the west coast of France. I wish it would hurry up and get the memo

The tailwind on the way to visit B&Q yesterday was glorious, there's nothing like effortlessly sailing along a smooth road at 30mph on a road bike.
(The less said about the return direction the better...)

Just had to do a complete bearing change on the FS. Last one was in January.
As for the reasons, I believe the jetstream has been royally ****ed by the crazy water temps we have been having. Sea temperatures are still well above the normal. So not only are we getting low pressure system after low pressure system, they've all got more energy and are carrying more water.
The fun could really start when hurricane season arrives and they start rolling up the US coast and rebounding out towards us. Normally they start to weaken, but if the sea temperatures remain high, they could hold onto a bit more energy than usual.

1,000 miles of slop since January, basically. I've been on towpaths wherever possible, but it was to be expected. I've got a new bike waiting in the garage, but it's not showing its face while the trails are in this state.
I’ve always had the mindset to embrace the wind, it makes you stronger but it’s now getting to the point of ridiculous!!
I’ve just cycled back from the supermarket (6 miles)with the family’s weekly shopping on my trailer and it has done me.
Looking forward to the day when rain is my only nemesis.😀
I take it all back! I can see blue sky and the sun streaming in from the window beside me is warming me up nicely*

Never mind last summer, quite a few people on this thread seem to think that we're experiencing normal weather at the moment. Either they are deluded or just contrary - I tend to think it's the latter, just arguing for the sake of it. Showers, hail, sun and wind are normal for this month. Rain every day for months isn't.
Going back to last year, I was in London in October (lateish in the month?) and it was very hot. T-shirt and picnic weather, but my mind keeps telling me that it's rained since July though, which is obviously wrong.
So we had a bit of sun yesterday, then it went as black as mother's coal shed in winter and we had an almighty hail storm, then it got sunny again.
And I walked te dog this morning and there was a ground frost.

Brooding sky and spots of rain when I started riding yesterday evening, then the sun came out and the trails turned out to be surprisingly dry.

Frost this morning in north Glasgow at about 6am. 2 deg while out on the bike for an hour, between 6:30-7:30.

was overdressed in 3/4 shorts a nd a mid baselayer a week before.
it's a confusing time for my easy acess biking kit drawer, 3/4 shorts are now in there, but so are my mid thermal longs, along with short sleeved tops! chaos! 😉
I'm not the only one with an easy access drawer? just the stuff I regularly use, easy to grab, a few options for the variable weather, with the rest of the kit for all other times of the year in it's normal storage in the wardrobe? Mostly to make it so when I'm out in the mornings I don't wake up the OH rifling through the wardrobe (not a euphamism)
Lot's of thing depress me. But the weather isn't one. Who cares. Its rarely trying to kill us with extremes. The days that its actually so bad i don't want to go outside are so few and far between thats they're almost a treat.
Out last night - near Forest of Dean and 99% dry with just a few puddles. Last week it was a pit of endless slop. Bluebells are out as well. Should have taken some pics but was too good to stop.
Weekend looks good as well. Off to FoD proper for 'bluebell day'.
All the fields round us are drying up super quickly as well. I know this as every second vehicle on our lane is a tractor!

Few things annoyed me on the way home, then I got back to Derbyshire and it was gusty wind, cold and raining.. Every bit of enthusiasm drained from me and I just threw my toys out of the pram and didn't bother. Spent the next hour in a stinking mood and came to the gym
My (flat) local woods occasionally get flooded in winter for a couple of weeks. This year they flooded in November and are still more flooded (like 8ft deep flooded) now than I have ever seen seen it in previous years. All of the other ponds are full to the top.
The water table is basically about 1cm below the ground.
Thankfully things are drying out a bit where there is a slope, hard to come by in Leicestershire aside from Charnwood.

I ride all year round, and I'm very much "no such thing as the wrong weather..." sort of rider, but in exchange for those grim days when the wind is driving rain/hail into every bit of exposed skin and you're soaked through and you look like Swamp Thing, the pay-off is the memory of last summer and the summer to come when you know you'll get those all day summer rides when even a tee-shirt and shorts is too much clothes, and those perfect summer evening rides when you're chasing the light back home becasue you spent too long sitting on the ridge watching the world go by, or you stopped for an ice cream.
We really didn't get much of that last summer, and excluding a nice week or so in September it's been slashing it down since July last year, and it hasn't really stopped since then, as our weather system has been trapped by the Jet Stream and a warm Atlantic. We reached storm Kathleen for goodness sake, that 11 named storms of the 23/24 season, the most there's ever been, and that was only a couple of weeks ago!

Nowhere near as nice as last weekend with the northerly breeze knocking the temps down, but at least it's no raining (albeit some lanes are still damp), just not as inviting as previous few weekends when summer kit was borderline possible.
Currently not looking good for next weekend, rain with similar temps and breezy.

It was bone dry on my local trails here in Wales over the weekend. I was riding the unofficial steep stuff which I haven't bothered with since September because of deep mush!

Was a hint of spring at weekend but Sunday was cold and now it's grey, wet and cold again.
I took my summer road bike off the turbo trainer and replaced it with the winter bike at the weekend and realised I hadnt even ridden my winter bike at all!
Surely it's got to change soon?!?!?

On our Saturday road ride, a bunch of off-road motorbikes went past and then headed off on one of the trails we sometimes use. Had barely left the tarmac and they were straight away splashing through a mahoosive lake of a puddle.
Another grim week promised, maybe next Monday will be ok again? One day a week seems all we can hope for.
Just had four days of dry weather and largely dry trails in North Wales.
Granted not the warmest, but not actually cold and I'm certainly not complaining.
We've usually had a little spring heatwave by this time of year, but at least we seem to be getting actual spring weather rather than constant rain now. Touch wood.
