in what way ? universally despised or skint and playing in the third tier ? 😉
I remember there being widespread if begrudging respect for Paisley's Liverpool but Dalglish's team were universally despised for their whinging, for bullying the ref and for generally expecting everyone else to let them win.
Well we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I still suspect that it was a Manchester-centric hatred. As far as bullying the ref, again, I can't remember much ref bullying going on. Arguably the first real pressure was put on refs when Furguson instructed Keane and Scholes to constantly badger the ref on the pitch while he did it from the sidelines. Of course, Sky's 37 camera angles on every incident didn't help either. And they didn't expect everyone to let them win - they just went and won everything regardless.
As a non Liverpool/Man United supporter I back the point that Dalglish's Liverpool were universally disliked for the exact reasons mentioned above.
Nowadays, the Liverpool image is quite far away from the cheeky loveable scouse image that their fans like to believe people have of them. The view actually is of a manager who has lost the plot and is totally up his own arse, a hypocritical captain preaching about diving while rolling around on the floor, a chief exec who is happy to tap up and unsettle smaller teams' players, fans who rob their own at European finals while continually harping on about being victims. Need I go on?
As for Citeh, I've always liked them and seen some similarities between their fans and ours. I've also always liked Mark Hughes as a manager (and player). That was until he started taking a leaf out of the Harry Redknapp school of management and openly talking about how he would love it if another teams' player joined him but of course he couldn't talk about it as he is contracted to someone else - i.e. using the media to tap players up. I really hope they do sign Terry as the team and the player would probably be made for each other.
Skint and playing in the third tier - thta was precisely my point. The investors wil bail out, it will turn out all the loans were on crazy schemes, the players will sod off when they realise they need to be at a club with more exposure and the club will be paying percentages of their wages for years after they last see them.
Strangely, Leeds started to get a few neutral fans when they were on their 'adventure' in the Big Cup. Those goons Bowyer and Woodgate put
paid to that, then O'Dreary put the final nails in the coffin by constantly regurgitating the 'bunch of kids' line.
i think it would be a bad thing for the national side if too many of the england starters signed for city and played no european football in the season leading up to the world cup finals.
On the other hand could that not benefit the national team if they've played 20 less games in a season?
that's a fair point. i suspect that it won't quite work that way though as if they're not involved in european games, they're likely to be included in the littlewoods and fa cup squads and end up playing almost as many games.
"£25 for Adebayor is pretty good for a proven striker, thought you would want a lot more, even keep him, at least til eduardo is fully fit, other wise you only have Bender and van persie"
£25m is a hell of a lot for a moody player! Thats £1.5m per goal! Seriuosly its a good thing you have loads of money because the way its being spent your going to need a big balance to pay the rent! I would think most AFC fans would take the money gladly..
"fair point TM, though i still dont think we will ever be as unpopular as utd........ no matter how much money we spend."
Oh yes you will, most fans thought Chelsea were a nice club until they started throwing RA's cash about & winning stuff - although you do have to win something first..
And as for buying John Terry for £40m? Thats madness too - a 29 yr old with a bad back..A good captain he maybe & a brave defender too but his best days are behind him. Chelsea should take the money & spend it on Ribery.
And as for buying John Terry for £40m? Thats madness too - a 29 yr old with a bad back..A good captain he maybe & a brave defender too but his best days are behind him
not sure about all of that. if city have lots of cash then i'd say it's a good buy for them and good business for chelsea. in footballing terms, rubbish for terry and england.
good buy for City (Barry and Tevez) certainly improving but along way to go.
Are they going to get Keegan in as manger given the number of strikers?
5th is my prediction for this season possibly pip Arsenal but I doubt it.
Their money should buy success eventually but no top top drawer best in Europe in their position jutst yet.
I think every team will be a litlle poorer this season as they all have probs (manu ronnie gone, Liverpool well inconsistency and Alonso, Chelsea aging and new manager and Arsenal lost Adebayor) so may be alittle more unpredictable which is no bad thing.
A good captain he maybe & a brave defender
Always make me laugh when people feel the need to use the word "brave" when talking about John Terry. With better positional play he may not need to throw himself into those last ditch tackles that he's famous for.
And no footballer should ever be described as "brave" for their endevours on the football pitch.
I cant see it being good business for anyone but CFC. He probably wont play much more than 1/2 a season this year with the injuries hes picked up. So £40m for a 29 yr old defender is way overpriced & only going to cause the transfer market to heat up even more - but if City want to pay it & JT puts in his transfer request..
"And no footballer should ever be described as "brave" for their endevours on the football pitch."
Elaborate please.
Can somebody pay me mere £100k per week so I could be brave?
Need I go on?
Yes, please do, that much has given me a good laugh so far...
I'm gutted he's playing for city but in a perverse way I like them buying these players I've always preferred the manchester derby to the utd/pool or even the media generated united/aresenl/chels. And now we can have proper good attacking games and it will make winning even more satisfying.
For me its a bit like heinze I liked him his effort and the bite in his play but just as heize average defending, tevez needs to score more goals. Surprised he didn't go inter.
Whilst it would be silly to doubt SAF united still need to find 25 goals to replace ronaldos efforts.
"And no footballer should ever be described as "brave" for their endevours on the football pitch."Elaborate please.
Brave is fighting in a war, beating a disease, laying down your life or wellbeing for others. Not being paid vast sums of money for playing a game that you love.
There are plenty of footballers that I have vast admiration for. Not one of them would I describe as "brave" for anything they have done on the pitch.
Need I go on?Yes, please do, that much has given me a good laugh so far...
Not much you can argue with in my post then. Fair enough.
Fair point Scott though you do sound a little bitter/jealous.. 😉
I think some players are brave within the scope of what they do - compare them to LCPL Johnson-Beharry then no they arent very brave!
Of course I'm jealous some people get paid loads of money for booting a ball around - I'd ****ing love that!!!
But that hasn't impaired my judgement of what constitutes "brave" - I think its a term thrown around far too easily nowadays - especially where JT is concerned.
As I said within the scope of what they do then some players are brave & using that those parameters then JT could be classified as brave..Whereas someone like Veron probably wouldnt be.
No your judgement of brave isnt impaired but perhaps your field of view is a little narrow.
There are other areas of sport where I would call the participants brave as well..F1 or boxing or rugby or DH biking. To single out footballers from this catergory just because they are vastly over-paid & playing a game they love strikes me as being deliberately exclusive, perhaps based on reasons that 1. You dont like JT 2. You dont like CFC 3. You dont like overpaid, pampered prima donas & the attention the receive. All fair points if thats the case. But none the less, within the remit of the game it is possible to call some players brave.
ps I think it was very brave of Petr Cech to play football again after having his skull fractured in several places..There are other players who have suffered severe injuries before & come back to play but I cant remember any right now - Id probably call some of them brave too!
Go on then. Give me an example of John Terry being "brave".
And yes, I'd agree with you on the Petr Cech thing.
Nope not gonna bother. Its now apparent that you just dont like JT, so whatever I say you will decry. If yer a Hammers fan, Im guessing by the moniker that maybe you are (which would also go some way to explain why you dont like JT) look after that wee italian for us will you. Im sure someday he will be back at the Bridge 😉
Why would being a West Ham fan mean that I dislike JT???
