Buy something the same weight as your empty rucksack, scan and then place your rucksack in the bagging area and the item on the floor. Scan and pack as normal into your rucksack just remembering to pick up the item off the floor before you leave.
I despise them - they never work with my Courier bag - which seems to upset the scales and doesn't quite fit on the weighing plate properly - I just queue for a proper till or leave my trolley and walk out if there isn't one open.
