It's a variant of this I think but using Hue rather than WeMo https://ifttt.com/applets/rvkhC5a3

can’t you do it with something like IFTTT?

I don't know, can I?

Still having random weird effects, perhaps caused by having previously set them on on Alexa with the same names but via Bluetooth. The bedroom light came on this morning at 7am on its own but I cannot refer to it by its name or set its colour because it says the TV lights cannot be controlled that way; also my wife cannot operate the living room lights but apparently I can by giving the same commands. Last week I was too busy to properly sort it out 🙂

You mean the Hue app on iOS?

@molgrips no, use the Home (Apple Homekit) app. Only takes a minute to set it up with Hue if you haven't done so already, it's all Homekit compatible. (it's an Apple feature that Hue are supporting, rather than the other way around)

@molgrips the other way you can do it is by installing a Node Red server on your home server (or any computer which is always on, Raspberry Pis are very popular for this!) I have been playing around with this over the last couple of weeks (my Node Red install is part of Home Assistant, but you can run it independently)

It's a great visual flow-based drag n drop programming language, perfect for automations, you can also insert JS code if you want to do it old-school.

There is a Hue node (what they call plugins, basically!) It leverages the Hue API but will make things way simpler.

bought a couple of bulbs and a couple of switches, in lieu of a sunrise alarm clocks (was cheaper, and likely more useful)
Its also ticked off a few other annoyances/gimmicks:

1) No light switch for the downstairs hall, upstairs (though there is one for upstairs downstairs), now they are just tied together so that solves that
2) set timers on the brightness so when the little one needs a piss in the night and turns all the lights on, they only comes on dim between the hours of 10pm and 7am. (unless you double click it)
3) got a "button" attached the littler ones cot, so when she needs changing in the night the lights only come on at their absolute minimum brightness (which is plenty, but saves waking anyone else up)

and the outside light can come on in advance when it detects in cycling home from work, (or at least it would if i was in the office)
