So I`m taking my bike with me to the South of France on the edge of the Pyrenees on the family holiday and just starting to add up the total cost.
Easy jet additional fee £100
Bike bag for safe transport £100
Upgrade on car rental so I can fit it in the boot £50
Total £250
Looking at this in the cold light of day Im wondering if it would have been better looking into hire options abroad. Ill be using it about 4 or 5 times during the holiday so it will be working out at approx £50 a ride.
Worth it?
Easy jet additional fee £100
are you sure?
Borrow a bike bag?
Put it in a free cardboard box from your LBS. Less likely to get damaged and £100 cheaper. Or drive all the way. Less hassle than flying.
Last time I went with easy jet it was £32 for the bike. Bike bag cost £30 on ebay, or pack nicely in a box from your LBS.
Can't help with the car 🙂
Where are you getting your prices from!?
For me its been:
Sleazy Jet Bike Fee £25 each way
Hire Polaris Bike Pod Pro £5 per day.
Total: £100 for a week, £135 for 2 weeks.
Sorry - Ryan Air. my mistake.
Bike [s]bag [/s] box from LBS for safe transport [s]£100[/s] £free
Where can you hire bike pods from?
cardboard bike box from shops work just fine or you can get a s/h bike bag cheap, id recommend one with wheels at one end
youd be amazed what you can squeeze in a small car with the seats down, or take some bungee straps and leave it sticking out the back!
lyinair are scum
Train? we did it to Bordeaux and it was fantastic, you can take a bike on in a bike bag.
Thebikechain, Edin do boxes.
Free bike box from lbs is near enough the same
Make sure you create some means for bag handlers to be able to get hold of box. Recent experience of 2 friends was that handlers created their own way of putting holes in the boxes using some implement or large foot ❗
Observation at Edin airport on Fri I would advise either an lbs box before parting with cash for a cheap bag which are not easy to manhandle through crowded airports. Another tip, do not pack too much into bag. Took 1smiley handler to shift mine (Polaris)as opposed to 2 miserable guys to shift a box!! These guys do not have much time to turn a plane around and regardless of how many which way up, fragile and handle with care stickers you care to stick on they will still heave it as far as possible 🙄
The problem he's going to have taking a bike on that sort family holiday is carting the box/bag around in the hire car along with the rest of the family and luggage.
Better off driving there in the first place, hiring out there or just not bothering
Swap to a Ritchey break-away frame and then put the bike in a normal suitcase:

or drive there and put the bike in a torpedo on the roof.
or buy a airnimal and put it in a normal case.
the cost savings might go some way to offset the costs of the ritchey frame/airnimal bike.
