Im off to sweden and wanted to buy my friend a bottle of single malt whiskey as a present, but i assume that i cant take it on because of the regulations about fluids. Do you think i can stash it in the hold luggage?
cheers
You can buy a bottle after you have gone through check in and take that in your hand luggage. Or you can put it in your hold luggage without any problems
You're allowed to carry fluids in the hold...
cheers my friend will be pleased ! anyone know a single malt whisky that would make a good present ?
Depends what kind of whisky they like but a safe bet would be something like Glenmorangie as its quite smooth - Macallan is also a fairly classy 'accessable' one too. I prefer Islay stuff usually like Laphroaig but it can be an acquired taste as its very peaty and smoky.
If its going in the hold make sure you protect it. Speaking as someone who has arrived at his destination with his belongings soaked, sticky, smelly and full of shards of broken glass.
remember that whisky is a major export, you're probably not taking them something that won't be readily available in the shops where you are going.
think a bottle of whisky is ludicrously expensive in sweden though, and only from official government off licenses.
Grumm, you are right about the price of whisky in Sweden so it will be much appreciated. IMHO you may want to steer away from the big peaty Islays like Laphroiag as it is just too much for some.
If its boxed it will be OK in your hold luggage, otherwise buy in duty free and take on the plane. Be aware that a lot of the stuff sold in the airport is 1l rather than 750cl, so you can end up paying more simply because you are buying a bigger bottle.
duty free when you land in scandinavia is well cheap; although choice isn't brilliant.
2nd avoiding the islay choice, I bloody loves it but if they're a 'novice' whisky drinker then it may just put them off.
what about Dalwhinnie? Pretty accessible drop.
Or Talisker is a good 'un.
mmm... Talisker.
grumm I know someone who named his daughter Talisker. More worryingly he used it as a password for a porn site he'd subscribed toas well. Left me with a slightly uncomfortable feeling.

you're right about the 'acquired taste' bit.
