For a significant wedding anniversary - spa / pool would be nice.
Wot you got?

Budget?

Significant, but not eye watering - £250 a night?

Gerry wouldn't have it any other way. 😉
Is that the sort of thing you're looking for? Or more remote and intimate?

Grosvenor.

IIRC it's the only 5 star hotel without a pool - got special dispensation...

It really is very good.

Grosvenor Pulford is really nice, worth adding to the shortlist.

Whaaaaaaaat 😯
It's Ok but not in the same league as the Grosvenor or Carden Park!

If you want a pool, etc. I think I'd go for Hoole Hall as it's very nice and the restaurant is good too. Fairly close to the city centre (you could walk it but it's a bit of a drag), pus you have easy access to the motorways to Liverpool, etc.
Grosevenor is fab but no pool, etc. City centre location so nice for wandering round town plus they have a posh chocolate shop now 🙂
Carden is big and I've not seen inside for a long time but I'm sure it's to a good standard. If you play golf it's got three courses and the road biking is good straight out of the door (nice quite roads up towards Malpas. 15 mins by car from Chester though.
You're not thinking of going around the dates of Chester Races are you? If so be warned that Chester is rammed full at that time.

Thanks again for the recommendations.
We ended up at The Doubletree which was very nice.
Now Chester for brunch before a drive through Welsh Wales and a week at the seaside - happy days!
