Looking at holiday options for the summer.

Likely to be camping (because of costs), but if anyone has any great - and cheap - self catering options, we could be interested.

We've had a couple of lovely holidays recently in Cornwall (near Sennen) and north Devon (Watermouth Bay / Woolacombe), but current thinking is Dorset or possibly Isle of Wight.

Campsite preferences: on/very close to the coast/beach. Probably lower-key more relaxed sites rather than more formal sites. Would be a bonus to have some reasonable riding (gravel or MTB) from the door.

Eldest HTO daughter wants us to go to the Scilly Isles ... I've currently vetoed that on the basis of time/distance (7 hours drive from Leeds + 3 hours ferry), cost (£400 ferry?) and weather (warmer, but wetter than UK average?) ... but happy to reconsider if anyone on here tells me I'm wrong!

Isle of Wight ferry is eye wateringly expensive too.

My 2p worth would be Dorset. Been loads of times and given the opportunity I'd be there again in a flash.

Anywhere from Lyme Regis to Poole. Its all good.

Ashurst camp site, a stones throw from the train station? Plenty of riding options around the area.

Scillies is brilliant. But a PITA to get to and costly. It’s also likely that every campsite is booked. It’s also colder than the mainland. But that hasn’t stopped us having it as our main holiday about 15 times

I like Dorset. Got to know it from my daughter living in Bournemouth. I’ve done some great rides on the Isle of Purbeck. You can day trip to the Isle of wight from Lymington, which i might do tomorrow.

South Wales is great too. Pembrokeshire has surfing, climbing and great coastal walks. Off road riding options are limited. The Gower gets off road riding but is a much smaller area

If you don’t mind camping, there’s a basic camp site, actually just a fenced off section at the top of a field, called Sugar Park, between Beeson and Beesands in South Devon, there’s a standpipe for fresh water in a bit of hedge that divides the top part in two, and a little toilet block with two loos with handbasins. When I was last down there, it was £10/night for a tent, and £15 for caravans and RV’s. The pub in Beesands, The Cricket Inn, does outstanding food, but their B&B prices are fairly high. Payment used to be a tenner pushed into an honesty box on the wall of the loo.

This is the view across Start Bay towards Dartmouth…

Here’s the location…

Camping is the best. Get passed the set up, it's ace.

Struggled a couple of early camps this year as I had a broken pelvis, but we did it..

What about north Norfolk coast, some brilliant beaches, lots of campsites, plenty of places to visit, especially if you National Trust or similar memberships, lots of walking/ cycling/ water sports? I live near Holkham/ Wells next the Sea and becoming a more and more popular holiday spot

Purbecks is good. Somewhere close to the Square and Compass is what I would go for. I used to stay at Tom's Field at Langton Matravers bitd. Not sure what it's like now, but ticks the close to coast.

South west corner of Wales

Dorset and IoW are good though, could easily do a week in each

West Wales - Cardigan Bay - we're planning a 'tour' of Wales camping around the coast. We know North Wales very well.  Some cracking looking campsites (close to fab Beaches) along the West Coast

Camping near Swanage in the Purbecks - Tom's Camping field is really nice, but there's plenty of other options.

Miles and miles of gravel all around you 😁

IOW is nice, but the ferry is ridiculously overpriced - over £120 each way in the summer!

We've stayed in done cool glamping pods at Tapnell farm (though it's got pricey since Covid), anddwe camped at Calborne mill, which was nice, if a little wind swept!
