Hi
after a cheap motion detector outdoor camera (wildlife investigation) - leave in garden, wait a while, plug into pc, view pictures sort of thing
There are some on ebay for about £10 - but interested to know a bit more about what to look for etc before purchase

Slightly random approach but you could go with a Raspberry Pi & usb webcam (can be powered by a battery) in a plastic box. Total cost about £50 and could be used for other things as well.
I can send you a python script that will allow it to watch for movement and then take pictures/video and then email them to you!
