Sniffing around looking at a 2002 Skoda Fabia Elegance - a/c, roof rack and some other crap. It has a 2.0 litre petrol engine which seems to be a bit less common and Band J VED. Seller is VAG dealer so I assume it's a trade-in. They say it has a FSH and has had its cambelt changed. 2000 quid listed but assume that's fairly negotiable.

The Octavia is the preferred estate around here, generally, isn't it? I'm not too bothered about space and although the 2.0 petrol won't be the most efficient, I don't think I'll be doing enough miles per year to get upset about it all.

Is the fact that it's not that common a bad thing? Or is it just a Skoda like all the rest so common as muck?

Have a look on briskoda.
The fabia in general is fairly bombproof, the 2 litre petrol is a fairly rare engine spec but is standard VAG stuff so should be fairly good. Check insurance though, not too sure but think it may be fairly high as they are no slouch.
I have the vrs, wish they had done an estate version of that.

Cheers - I had a look on Briskoda but it's pretty oriented to the sportier models which this is not.

Yeah, I would assume that if it's all out of the VAG (lol) parts bin, it should all be more or less OK.

Insurance shouldn't be a problem (knock wood) - my old man is buying it so it should be reasonably affordable...

Briskoda is a load of old men who quibble about floor mats and stuff.

From what I know about the Fabia estate...

Friends over the road have one. Diesel, not sure of the spec but its not an Elegance I don't think. Think they're pleased with it - had it ages now.
Other (closer) friends had one. Bought cheap and had quite a few problems with it, mostly stemming from the pipe that connects the washer fluid to the rear wiper constantly leaked. Was bought from a Skoda dealer and was in to be fixed time and time again and they couldn't. Other than that though, solid little car.
