STW Chess Tournament - anyone up for it?

Am I the only person who finds the layout/format of the tournament super confusing? I can't work out the table thingy with the little hover-over match previews at all. Maybe it will make sense in the morning!

0 for a loss
1/2 for a draw
1 for a win

Just means you don't get a non-scorimg game.

I've just had two very close matches with @beiciwr64 . Won one, lost one. Good fun!

The tie-break points are indeed to decide between people on the same score. Or, indeed, to act as a tie-break... 😉

As I understand it, it's calculated by adding up the scores of the people you defeated and half the total score of people you drew against.

So, I'm enjoying the STW Chess Club T2 tournament and have surprisingly found myself getting through to the next stage : )
I think I've even improved somewhat during this time, however I got totally outclassed by epynt and will need to improve quite a bit more to stand any chance in the knockout part. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep up my practise? Whilst groups 2 to 5 have finished, group 1 is not half way through, so any minor gains will be long forgotten by the time we go further. Should I just play randoms?
If anyone else is in the same boat and fancies keeping things ticking along then I'm Django2357 on there. I'd happily play 24hr a move games.
How is the first tournament coming along? (is thre any way to view this if you're not part of the tournament yourself?)

93 games complete, 7 remaining.

Finished all my games ages ago so because I was getting a bit rusty I did a few games against the computer last night and got annihilated. I need to work on that before the second round starts!

@gauss1777 - will try and add you for a 24hr game in a bit.

This link should let you see how the first tournament is going.

https://www.chess.com/tournament/the-inaugural-stw-chess-championship

I've asked you for a 24hr game via chess.com. THere should be a challenge to accept in your notifications and/or email.

The other option is either random games or joining another tournament from the upoming list. Probably best to choose one with a grading limit to keep things more even,

For example.

https://www.chess.com/tournament/obsessed-aficionados for players graded under 1500

If you click the join button you will get a notification from Chess.com once the tournament is full and it starts.

There seems to always be a big gaps as the games in each round finish. For example I am curently taking part in 16 tournaments but only have 13 active games.

Thanks crazy-legs and irc. 16 tournaments with 13 active games sounds huge!
I found in the group stage that I benefited from the slower pace, but if the move took days I'd forget my train of thought and even make rash moves when I saw my opponent move, in the hope my opponent would make a move then rather than in another couple of days. All good fun.

@gauss1777 I've just sent you a 24 hour per move game request too. At least I hope I have, some of the chess.com interface is still a bit beyond me.

Thanks kennyp I just noticed that. I’m enjoying the games started today, I made a big blunder in a move against jlyon and then another poor move, so things are not going overly well. However, they do seem a good games to learn from - ie just a bit better than me. I find the start of games the hardest part at the moment.

And if anyone else fancies a game while we wait for the next rounds of the tournaments to start just ping me a challenge on chess.com, I'm kprook on there.

Re the blunders, yes I've made a good few too. The annoying things is when you look back you think "What on earth was I thinking of" for a lot of them!!

That said, some of the narrow defeats I've had have been really enjoyable games.

Indeed. I often notice a split second after pressing the tick! Although not today, I was caught totally unawares. How, I do not know. On the flip side, even when things look hopeless there’s always the chance your opponent will blunder.

@kennyp Sorry about that last game, had completely forgotten about repeated moves causing a draw...mind you I was pretty much out of ideas by then😄

Fairplay, you’ve totally undone me 😀. Whereas, irc1979 is destroying me!

At least it’s confirmed my need for plenty of practise 😩😂😭

No need to apologise. By that point I was happy with a draw. I did wonder if you'd forgotten about that rule. I didn't think you had done it deliberately as you were ahead in material. About 10 or 12 moves before that I had a chance to capture your rook but moved my bishop to the wrong square. After that I was totally on the defensive. I was out of ideas too I admit. Had you just traded pieces I think you'd have won. Good close game though, and a marathon at about 5 weeks or something like that.

I've just gone through the game analysis of the one we've just played @gauss1777 , and all it came up with was a list of blunders from both of us! 🤣
I played the endgame OK, it was my early/middle bit that really needs some work. I've put in a rematch request anyway.

Shh don’t tell everyone 😂

Rematch accepted.

I’m not sure of the etiquette, but I shall offer ongoing rematches to those that I’m playing on here. I fully understand if anyone does not want to accept for any reason.

Is there any way of starting the second round before the first has finished? Reason being that there's only one game outstanding in the first round, and the result won't affect who qualifies for the second round (I don't think). That game's been going on for nearly a month and only six moves have been made, so we could be looking at June or July.

Not complaining per se, more that I've really been enjoying both tournaments and keen to play more. Most of the games I've played have either been narrow wins or narrow defeats, so looks like this is the ideal level for me.

Or we start a third tournament, maybe 24 hours per move.

In the meantime if anyone wants a friendly game......

Waiting is just part of these sort of tournaments.... some people play fast, some slow.

You can post open games on Chess.com so you can play as many games as you want while you wait, in fact too many if you're not carefull!

Waiting is just part of daily chess. I'm currently in 15 touraments but only 10 active games.

Happy to organise another tournament if the interest is there. 1 day per move. Similiar to last with groups of 5 with top 2 going through.

Anyone interested reply with chess.com username. If we can get 20 or more that is enough for a viable tourament.

I'll wait until I see how many names are in before setting it up so I can choose the most suitable group size. 25 is 5x5. 28 coud be 4x7 with 3 going though etc.

Since saying much the same as kennyp last week, I’ve played several games against people on here and not won a single game : (
However, I’m keen to be included:
Django2357

Ps 24hr a move works well.

I'll go in for another as well. Enjoyed first round but the 5 days per move is a bit long in my opinion and loses a lot of momentum, 24 hrs more than enough.

Add me in, I'm neverumind on chess.com

24hrs per move is fine although if there's a way of specifying that no game can run for longer than (say) 5 days overall, that would cut the waiting time down a lot as well.

I have looked at the time thing. Other than making it 24hrs rather than 3 days, 5 days etc, and making it a no vacation tournament there is no way of enforcing faster moves after a tourament starts.

The best suggestion I have seen is that if there is one or two games left to play in a round that the players involved arrange between themselves to set up an hour or two when they will both be online and play the game out in one session. That is of course completely up to them.

Probably easier to make faster moves in one session than coming back to a game after a day or longer and needing to study it again before moving.

Good game @kennyp - though it got a bit torturous at the end, I'm sure I should have been able to finish it much sooner but you were like the black knight in the Holy Grail 🙂

I enjoyed it too. Other than that moment I clicked to commit to a move and then instantly realised I had missed an attack on my queen. I could have kicked myself at that moment. My own stupid fault though. At the end I was trying to capture your last couple of pawns in the hope of forcing a draw. With hindsight though the polite thing to do would have been to resign instead of dragging it out. I gather that's generally good chess etiquette so apologies. Well played though and anytime you fancy a rematch give me a shout.

I don't mind at all even though it was annoying, ha! In that situation it's up to me to be able to force check mate and I'm sure I had opportunities that a better player than me could have taken.

You were very good at making it difficult for me though!

Blundering to lose your queen is gutting, I have done it way too many times...
