United Utilities have been sending us messages here in Manchester over the past couple of months to save water urgently as the lakes in the Lakes where we get our water from are only at 30% capacity (should be 70% normally this time of year).
Looks like it's our fault, sorry :p
Warm and dry here this week so far, guess all the water saving has caused a backlog in the clouds which have pushed off northwards.
OMM cancelled now too. Was supposed to be Langdale this weekend.
East side of coniston blocked, west will be ok. Hoofing down here, we've still got power but the next village down is out, our Beck is about 3ft up and roaring but the wind has dropped quite a bit from yesterday

Me too, but seeing some of the images that have come out from base I'm glad I'm not! Report from a friend who'd been out since the start of the week putting controls out was "Marquee was put up on Tue, was totally destroyed last night. Weather was too bad to go out yesterday [Weds] - really heavy rain and wind gusting 60kts on the tops."
Newby bridge itself (and the a590) is usually fine-
Currently closed (yet again) due to serious RTC (yet again).
12" of rain fell at Honister in 24 hours! Jesus.
Be ideal for some white water canoeing.
Rather annoyingly it went from way too low on Monday to way too high, with hardly anything in between. We spent ages scoping out sections of the Brathay and Rothay, but nothing I'd have been remotely happy taking the kid down
The grade 2 section between Grasmere and Rydal was this amazing himalayan looking section of huge wave trains. It looked OK in a hardshell with a solid group, but no chance whatsoever with our group. I was trying to explain to the kid what happens when kayak meets tree, but he was still disappointed. When I pointed out the unavoidable strainer midway down he just said " let's just do the section above then". Erm, and stop where?
Ah the innocence of youth. Reminds me of when I first got my driving licence and headed up to the orchy with a mate and a rubber dinghy. Luckily Big Rock rapid is the first one you find after turning off the A82, otherwise it could have got exceedingly messy. Even that was exciting enough in spate. Got into the main channel, PLFd and the paddle immediately broke. Such good fun, but thank god Easan Dubh wasn't the rapid we found.
Anyway, like every single other person holidaying in the Lakes today, we're going to try and split today. But first things first.... Loughrigg Terrace.... reckon it won't be too busy 😉
I drove from ambleside to kendal at 730 this morning for a pcr, the road by bowness had already claimed a car. Didn't attempt the return route so came back over the pass.
Also thinking about heading home to the modlands later

lemme guess, at the petrol station (yet again)?
Correct.
Have I woken up to an independent Scotland 👿
The sunrise this morning was the weirdest colour. Felt like something out of a dystopian science fiction film
weirdly I was reading about soviet era mapping, and the sky...well let's just say it had a nuclear winter feel to it, really odd.
Never seen Derwent and Coniston Lakes so high
went for a ride around Ladybower last weekend, and I've never seen it so low at this time of year.
Flood warnings here in Dumfries and Galloway.
Cree is high as is the nith in Dumfries centre!
COP26 getting disrupted by extreme weather would be somewhat ironical.
Sadly the point will be missed and the weather written off as typically Scottish
Which is true. Heavy autumn rain in Glasgow is not exactly a new thing.

Sorry, off topic, but similarly, went up with a mate who decided not to run it. At the time I was poor and wasn't going to waste the petrol. So ran it solo. In a diolen polo kayak.

Sadly not, just some really bad geography.
The good news is with the A595 closed at Duddon bridge and corney fell shut I can't get to work and the Costa del marra is safely boxed in.
lemme guess, at the petrol station (yet again)?
Which one, the one with the launch control short slip road onto dual carriageway, or the one with no filter entrance and a dangerous exit near the Newby Bridge roundabout? 🙂
Yeah, the Canny Hill one near Newby Bridge.
The trails were like rivers.
If thats at Grizedale on the official stuff, are they not always like that in the winter? I've been river riding there when they've had very little rain (for the lakes, its all realtive I guess). The trails just aren't designed well/haven't bedded in well for good drainage (which is ironic).
@stabiliser, im currently stuck in that place......

Looks like Cockermouth will be hit hard, Keswick is continuing to get worse. All southern routes closed in the county to barrow, so only way is A66 and M6
wet eh marra!

Don't get in a jam.
Well my missis vetoed the going home early idea, and we've had a lovely walk over Hampsfell Hospice to Cartmel and back via the Grange Fell golf links.
Couple of light, brief showers and now GnT time I think. Doggo absolutely fast asleep.
... to the modlands later
Don’t get in a jam.
Nice. 😎
Ventured out to get more beer. Found an abandoned taxi in the middle of a B road and a VW pick up thing. All by the same puddle. Cruiser went through easily however they might have tried it in the dark when it was deeper.
Panic not, I have beer again. Some nice Blonde Witch.
Belayed our walk around Derwent water and had a couple of hour stroll up a trail followed by a few pub stops. Perfect afternoon if you ask me.
We're at Bassenthwaite, looking like the rain has finally stopped. Pleased about that because I'm wearing the last dry clothes I have with me.
Chose a bad day to ride across Datrmoor with the wife. Damp.
Currently staying at Manesty on Derwent water in the caravan. Took the dog out this morning for her usual walk across the boardwalk towards the Lodore Hotel:

The B5289 to Keswick is a river in places and the other road is 'just' passable at Portinscale.
Never seen the lake this high before.

petrol station always gets the blame, this one some woman drove into the back of a wagon at the newbly bridge roundabout.
Too wet for the ferry!
We abandoned this morning and left wasdale at 9am after only 1 very wet and windy day of hiking. Adventurous drive out of south Cumbria with lots of flooding
It’s not been to bad today, certainly not at storm Desmond levels, but we are in the same manor.
Hopefully we can get 24hrs of reprieve if not then the water levels could be getting a touch high.
Was having a wee look at Haweswater earlier.
Still well below the ‘typical high range’. Was there last month and astonished how low it was. From the Nan Bield end car park it was a fair trek to even reach the water line. Loads of exposed dry stone walling which I’ve never seen before. The trend over the last 48 hours however has been pretty concerning, if anything it’s a good job there’s relatively empty basins like Haweswater to delay potential flooding downstream.
