[Closed] Starting running - any tips?

I have overtaken countless runners. Even when I cross paths with a fell race. I have never known a runner to overtake me.

Try steeper, rockier trails then. I overtake bikes quite frequently - and they're not pushing.

Bike is still out of action so I tried a run the other evening. My mate is work is into it so I gave the couch to 5k thing a go, as ever made a few mistakes along the way:

Didn't use the app
Didn't plan to run until the exact moment I began to run.
Wore 'pub' daps and cargo shorts because I was only going for a walk.
Went a bit far for my first go - ran 10k, I hadn't run more than across the road in 20 years.
Ran up a bloody great big hill, Caerphilly 'Mountain' to be exact.

I've been walking like a zombie since Tuesday.

God dam I need my bike back.

I'm not a runner but can't stand the lethargy on holiday any longer, so popped in the running machine.

So far I've done 3 X 5ks this week. Running on a machine is worse than cycling on a turbo imo though.

Amen to that. Running on a treadmill, certainly running at a flat pace, is so dull, really boring. I spice it up either doing the hill programmes on the treadmill, or doing ramp runs (start at a slow run and increase the speed every 30 seconds by 2 or 3 clicks. Keep going until you have to stop/fall off the treadmill/are sick. I did the above every day or 2 on my holiday and whilst nothing like running outside, it certainly kept it interesting.

That UTMB is incredible. We sat and had a sandwich next to one of the official stops in Bourg Saint Maurice on Wednesday and watched them come through. Read a bit about the race - fair play to them all, especially as the weather turned overnight for the worse.

Back to running tips - I recently bought a Flip Belt, which now means I don't have to wear one of those stupid phone cases on my arm, or hang my keys around my neck. Splendid.

I've gone further than that. My shorts have a small pocket and I carry a single key and a debit card and £10 note. I then wear a running watch to show pace and record the run. No phone, no "stuff", just me, it's awesome.

That was probably the 300Km team run - PTL: La Petite Trotte à Léon

... which is just insane

The actual 166Km UTMB starts today with the first batch expecting to finish in around 20hrs.

Very true

But my I suggest .... put the key under a plant pot, forget about the card and cash... what are there for anyway*? ... and ditch the watch.

RUN FREE my friend RUN FREE ... it's even better

*for the emergency taxi ?? Forget about it, you'll make it home 🙂

Doesn't look like the PTL came through Bourg Saint Maurice though. Looking at the website I'd say it was the TDS we saw.

It's all quite humbling watching it though isn't it?

Incredible! I've often seen the 6000D go through La Plagne as well - I would love to be able to do something like that.

Fair, but anything that doesn't involve carrying a phone feels like going light!

Taking a phone is a good idea. I know a guy who went running one winter's evening, slipped, broke his leg and had to actually crawl a mile to the next house - in the snow, with his leg hanging off. Now he takes a phone.

Best take a knife too. There was this guy, fell down a crack, got his arm stuck, had to cut it off...

A key is all I take, either house or car.
Depends on where I'm running from.

I pop the back door key in the 'key safe' to avoid having to take it out for a run!

Unless I'm running some distance remotely I don't normally take anything apart from a cheerful disposition and my now obsolete iPod Shuffle loaded wiv sum bangin' choonz! 8)

I sometimes like to listen to music while I run, but find smartphones just too big to get comfortable with, any armbands I have tried I seem to have to be constantly adjusting, so usually I just run with a key. I would like just a small bluetooth music player I could clip to my waistband, apple should update the shuffle.

Get a TomTom watch - gps, bluetooth music, hrm... Seems ideal for what you want.

Sony make running headphones with an mp3 player inside.

The ipod shuffle has been killed off, no chance of an update.

The modern Apple solution is to stick some music on your apple watch and stream it your bluetooth headphones, no need for a separate player.

I have a fenix 5, I wouldn't want to downgrade every other function, although it is a shame they didn't include some music playback on that watch.

My iPhone SE is small enough I really don't notice I'm carrying it. Usually in a well-designed waist bag, tho I also use an armband occasionally which I agree is a bit more trouble. I use that when I want music or podcasts (which I'll probably start up again over the winter with more longer runs). I've seen (heard!) some runners just playing through the phone's speaker which seems a bit crap but perhaps it's so they can still hear other sounds like traffic. I just keep to one earphone.

Hi Wallop, yes that was the TDS and you might have seen me. I finished in just under 27 hours for the 121km and 7,000m of elevation.

Coming out of Bourg St Maurice is really tough. 1,142 of ascent in 5km and that's just the start of the climb. It's 2,000m in total to the top of that section.

We saw the UTMB leaders come through Les Contamines on the Friday night. They were running faster than I do a 10km!

I just completed the C25k program today. Feeling rather chuffed with my small achievement, even though it is somewhat humbled by the stuff above, lol.

Well done Ciron thats a proper adventure 🙂

V8 its not just about distance. A hard run 5k requires just as much commitment and training. Its about intensity. I wanted to get below 15:30 for 5k and trained pretty hard to do it and the fast guys train with incredible intensity to run close to 13 minutes. Dont let the distance fool you any distance is hard if your targets are tough enough.

congrats V8ninety, you've beaten the wife who has taken nearly 2 years to not complete C25K!

Surfer that is some pace to do 15:30, Ive set myself the target of hitting 19:00 when the clocks go back!

Thanks chaps. My time was a more sedate 31mins, but it feels like quite the achievement nonetheless. I'm not sure I've ever been able to run 5k before, it's always hurt my lower legs too much, leading to me giving up. I'm going to work on getting a little faster and a little further now...

Good effort! Important thing is to keep enjoying it, the gains will come over time if you keep on with it.

Good job V8, i got to 28mins then for some reason hit CBA with a twitchy tendon so back at +30min. Did 10k race last week only 2nd 10k run, got to get back on it at some point to get to 25min for duathlon in march.
Does running ever get fun?

MSP - see my above suggestion of the flip belt - that negates the need for an armband.

Ciron - bloody well done!

Fair question, it certainly becomes enjoyable at some point but fun? I’m not sure at all.
I did a 20 mile run this weekend in prep for a marathon, it hurt, it was hard, my body screamed at me for large parts of it. Was it fun? Hell no. But did I enjoy it? Yes, in some ways I did.
