A miracle has occurred! The scruffs of Rossendale have learnt to use bins!

Post bank holiday weekend and I only collected half a bag from Whitaker Park / CowLane rather than the usual two full bags I would have expected.

(I expect another Civicpride litter picker beat me to it!)

Top of our lane yesterday, two cars pulled in young lads, one changing a tyre "morning, you lads ok?" "Yeah just had a flat" "OK AS long you're alright" gave them a cheery wave and drove on. Come back 10 mins later and the ****ing pricks have dumped a bag of KFC detritus on the grass. Bastards.

The problem with litter picking is that you cannot un-see litter.

Sometimes I just want to have a nice encumbered early morning walk with Bert. Unfortunately Monster swilling idiots and a spare green bag in my pocket result in hand picked litter picking.

Did a walk/litter pick with the kids then headed to the beach at the weekend. Loads of anglers on the beach. Mostly large family groups, no natives, was warmed by this sight of mixed cultures enjoying a simple activity.

https://imgur.com/a/BVfdQwn

I then saw that they were chucking their rubbish straight in the sea. 😳 I asked one bloke to stop and it very quickly turned hostile and I scarpered.

Every walk I go on I'm either totally disheartened by the litter everywhere, (mostly the bags and bags of dog shit tbh) or I end up having a row with someone Dropping litter or not picking up shite.

This activity, It's back for your mental and physical health!

I asked one bloke to stop and it very quickly turned hostile and I scarpered.

Earlier in the summer I was walking over a bridge in town and I remonstrated with a bloke chucking a beer bottle into the river.

He absolutely lost his shit with me, shouting, threatening to fight me, etc. I just stood there looking bemused!
He then started accusing me of harassing him and got his phone out to call the police 🤔

It took his girlfriend explaining to him that calling the police to say he'd thrown litter in the river and wasn't happy that I'd had a word with him maybe wasn't the cleverest idea.

They then scarpered, but he threw a few threats in my direction as he left.

Some people are ****s and idiots in equal measure!

I think I'm almost full grumpy old man now. This litter picking mission has I think made me even more aware of the selfishness of others, plus it's made me more likely to point it out. I may get murdered.

I was sat in the car in town yesterday just sat sitting while my partner went off to Boots for glasses.
A bloke pulls up into the space in front of me, his car facing mine nose to nose.
His wife gets out and wanders off over the road to the shopping centre.
I think nothing of it, until maybe a minute or so later when he still hasn't switched his engine off. It's a diesel and sounds like a tractor.
I wait a while. I look at him. I wait a while. I look at him. He's on his phone of course and it's been about ten minutes now.
I assume as it's a warm day that he's running his aircon.
I start chucking the odd key-turning gesture at him but he doesn't look up from his phone.

After a good bit I just can't not say something so I get out and ask him if he'd mind turning his engine off. His windows were open so not an aircon thing.

'Oh sorry, is it bothering you?'
'Yes it is actually. How long is your wife going to be? Have you not heard of the climate emergency?' I say, or something like that.

He turns it off and says sorry and I get back in the car.
After another five minutes his wife comes back and they pull out. I completely avoid eye contact 😂

Monday morning tidy up. 1 bag collected.

Also as a UDO (Useful Dog Owner) I've started collecting acorn's/horse chestnut/sycamore and whatever else that falls off trees and shrubs and plant them in the area of land that I've commandeered and cleared.

Litter picking season is coming to an end very soon as it's getting dark on the morning walk and there generally isn't as much litter about.
Collected another few pockets worth of acorns this morning for planting.

Trying out Harold on a liquid diet.
He seems to enjoy it.

The favourite tipple of a canal drinker by work. Too pissed to put the bottles in the bin that's 15 feet away from his preferred spot obviously.
Picked up along with a stainless steel steamer pan too.
Nowt so queer as folk...

You guys are dedicated. I do the same thing once a month or so along our road but not everyday.

What I can't understand is there are neighbors that walk dogs everyday and have commented on me picking up on litter but never pick up any themselves!?! If they picked up a bag once a week the road would be kept clear.

Another few pockets of acorns collected from footpaths and mowed areas (ie they would never have a chance naturally).

I've been going through MrsRNP impressive collection of potted dead garden plants and am going to plant the acorns in tubs/pots for a few years till I hopefully plant them as small trees. The conkers are going in the freezer for a month or so then will also get potted.

Few handfuls of litter but I haven't taken any pics as I can feel Cougar squirming at the thought of my Covid/cat aids/monkeypox/herpes/VD/piss/shit/vomit/blood covered hands!

Good efforts 😎👍

As someone that looks after countryside sites it is the most frustrating part of the job.

It's probably a good thing the perpetrators aren't about when we are, most of the staff here would be awaiting murder trials otherwise.

There might be a decent chance of picking up a prize with the litter lotto.
I wonder if there is a smaller prize of free food from the burger company sponsor?

Installed app this morning. It wants an email and DOB. You can take a photo and upload immediately or batch upload later and see if you've won an instant prize. Trustpilot reviews mention a few people winning smaller prizes.

Not a bad idea but it doesn't work for me as litter picking is a sideline to taking the dog for a walk and not worth the hassle taking a pic of every piece of litter I pick up.

3/4 of a bag (down from the 2bag Mondays in summer) collected this morning - it's dark at 6am so I can't see as much litter to pick it.

caravan still there😕

Too dark for proper litter picking but still hand picking much to Cougars disgust!

Acorns are planted now it's the turn of conkers! Collected from paths/roads/mowed areas ie where they wouldn't germinate or grow anyway. Will be planted tomorrow morning in SherBert forest. Some proper dobbers this year!

So that's pretty much it for this thread for the year.
Thanks to anyone who was inspired by this and did some litter picking round their area. See you in Spring when its light again in the mornings👋

Bert's back in business!

It's light enough in the mornings to be able to litter pick again.
1bag from the local park then half a bag on the way home.

Well done OP you've gained another disciple in me.

This will be my second spring of dog walking and I'm looking forward to it.

I've picked up bits of litter here and there on my travels previously, but now I'm going to have a bin bag (well carrier bag) on me every time I leave the house with the mutt.

I'll be employing the poo bag glove technique for picking up what I find.

I figure I'm out walking with the dog anyway so I might as well do some litter picking at the same time. I kinda becomes addictive lunging at litter and trying to nab it without stopping as we stomp along.

Fair play to you for keeping it up.
I'm struggling to find the motivation of late, mainly due to the sheer frustration of clearing one area when I'm out walking then a couple of days later it seems just and bad again.
It's probably not helped that the farmers around here have gone nuts cutting the hedges this past couple of weeks so the mountains of litter are even more noticeable now.

We collect, but not as routinely as you do. I now have some bin bags and gloves in my car. My friend and I filled three bags near Balqhidder the other day and took them home to my bins. 🙁

Monday morning double bagger! Interesting/depressing to see how grotty places have become when not litter picked for 4months over winter.
