That's what I'm looking for but know very little about tents. Plan is to be able to walk up to a mile or so from the car for short 2 night stays with the wee boy but be able to hang out in the tent a bit if it rains. Any ideas?

A bit moon on a stick request for a spacious and light tent, you normally sacrifice one for the other. Pop to Go Outdoors and have a look at their OEX range.

I have an oex 2 man tent. Can't remember which one, it cost around £140. Its light enough at 1.5kg, but it's definitely not spacious.
I would be ok with my wife in it, but distinctly uncomfortable with any other person.
So im gonna go with= light/spacious/under£200 pick two.

Vango Halo 200? split the pack between two when hiking? Bombproof, self-supporting geodesic, alloy poles, two entrances, two small porches. Spacious inside.

If you want a small living space as well, and don't mind tunnel tents, then the Vango Equinox 250 might be worth looking at. Again, split the pac so about (you) 3kg + 1kg (or however much your lad can manage in his pack)

Less than half price here: http://www.climbers-shop.com/245101/products/vango-equinox-250.aspx

Lightweight plus space is a difficult purchase but pack splitting pays dividends here and gives you more choice

That vango tunnel would be good. A big porch with a kid makes sense- they tend not to have the discipline to take boots and wet jackets off as they constantly get in and out so a large tunnel porch gives you a sheltered clothed area. Re the weight - it's a mile or so, 4-5kg is not going to kill you.

Or this one - 3 man but lighter.

We have used a decathlon ultra lite pro for nearly 10 years. Ours is 3 man for extra space but they do a smaller 2 man. Our 3 man is about 2.9 kg, (2 man is 2kg I think) not mega lite but not bad, easy enough to carry, fine to sit up in and play cards , cook in the porch and it has been pretty tough. Used on the bike in the car and on the back.

New version looks like it has a better porch than ours

If its only a mile I also wouldnt be too concerned about weight. Orherwise a spacious lightweight tent will be more than £200.

Id also look at the vangos. You could strap the tent to the outside of your backpack, if you feel that its bulky.

Light to me means under 5kg...not those obsessive weight junkies! All I have now is a hulking great 5man that must be 14kg!

Wild Country Hoolie 2 would fit the bill. Easy set up, good porch, stand up to a bit of weather, RRP £160 (but can be found cheaper) and 2.5kg. Our DofE groups use them and I've been impressed.

If you want a bit more room the Hoolie 3 is 3kg and available for well under £200.

Just beaten to it by Spin...Hoolie 2. Picked ours up for £104 from Nevisport albeit 2 years ago although a quick search shows can be had for £115

Oh, they do a Hoolie 2 ETC version of that too - convinced a proper big old porch is what the OP needs.

Halfords are doing a 50% off

I doubt it's "light" as in superlight but a few miles from the car...
I've got an ultralight 1.5 man (because you really need to be very friendly to call it a 2 man) but I'd take something a bit bigger for "a few miles from the car"

£18 .... ??? 2.3kg

a 3.5 in your price range. Recommended because of TBS tensioning system and extra 20-25cm headroom compared to similar tents.

I like the look of the Viso 3, and a kilo lighter than the Vango Omega 350. Comparing the two for space:

Still think I'd split the extra kilo between two for the mahoosive 3.5. Am maybe looking for something similar to replace our Halo 200 which finally caved in to UV damage after years. Not yet convinced of tunnel vs geodesic though. The Halo was rock solid and quiet in quite high winds.

For two people, a mile walk and multiple overnights I'd almost certainly be looking for a 3-man rather than 2-man tent. My 2-man is comfortable with me and my gear, two people and two lots of kit in there would be... "cosy" shall we say.

I've a similar Vango to that pictured above, can't remember the model name (could be the Omega 200/250) but it's a 2 man tent (genuine, not 1.5 like the LaserComp and not 2.5 either) with a large vestibule/porch. Has stood up to storms on the Western Isles and have walked in to Carnmore in Fisherfield, 4hrs from road, with it so reasonable weight wise as well.

Don't forget that whatever tent you get, the best living/cooking space when camping is outdoor space. Awning/tarp FTW:

I've got a Vango Halo 200, which has been fine with a reasonable amount of space and pretty easy to pitch. Its also got good ventilation and headroom. Good to have an entrance on each side of the tent. Suggest also getting the footprint for the tent as it makes the porch areas a bit more usable.

Ended up getting a vango pulsar 300 which is pretty bang on. Just a tad low on head height but I can live with that. 3.5kg or so, ideal. [img] [/img]
