[#2314379]

Just got in the shower, 3 minutes in, hair full of shampoo, the water runs out... Flummoxed, I get out of the shower, wrap myself in a towel and go and investigate.

Anyway, the water tank feels cold despite the heating being on... Hmmm... Went downstairs, the kitchen sink is full of water! Then realise the sink in the bathroom is full of water too...

No water is getting through it would seem to replenish the hot water tank cos it's all frozen, and the drains are frozen too! 🙁

Anybody else in the same situation? It best warm up in the next day or so, I've got a job interview on Wednesday, and I'll need a shower and a shave for that for definite!

It was proper bitter last night! We had no flowing water to the house first thing today. Now we have water upstairs but not down, which is wierd.

Hoping the thaw arrives soon, and that the pipes haven't burst, for everybody out there in frozen STWland

Weird.

We've had about three weeks of sub-zero temperatures and not had this problem. Why should it start happening when the temperatures start rising? Mind you, there was something on the BBC website about the amount of fat which gets poured down drains at this time of year. Of course, it solidifies and then causes all sorts of blockages.

Water regs require mains water pipes to be sited a minimum of 750mm in the ground, below the frost penetration layer

This is ours going in:

But in many older houses they arent anywhere near as deep as that. In fact when I was digging the trench for ours we went underneath the neighbour's whose pipe was only about 500-600mm down. Not as bad as some though, Ive heard tell of some pipes being barely a few inches under the flower beds.

Most of the outside taps have been frozen for over a week, but the water in the shower/toilet block has been runny, until today, which is odd, because the forecast temp is only -2 and it seems comparatively warm outside, and it has been much lower, so why has the water chosen today in particular to freeze I wonder?

Well where I live (Worcester), it was definitely the coldest it has been last night, at least for a week or so. In fact the ambient temperature round here right now is about -8, and I don't think its got above that all day either!

Managed to thaw out the drains now so the sinks are no longer blocked, but got no running water at all yet... Off round the GF's now, where she assures me they have water running!

having a vaguely similar problem in that the waste pipe from the bathroom has frozen up outside the house, so not draining the bath. Pipe for washing machine also seized up so no washing at the moment.
Unfortunatly the pipes are N facing and we had -8 last night but hopefully things will resolve themselves in the next few days before I leave my parents

Houns, my bathroom sink suddenly refused to empty this morning. Bath empties ok, took the u-bend off the sink and cleared out some evil smelling gunk but the pipe through the wall's clear so the blockage must be outside the wall. Pain in the arse, have to gob in the bog when I clean me teeth. Glad it's not just ours.

Try mixing a concentrated solution of table salt and water and pouring down the drain. Worked for us.

Tried that, still blocked..The Bath, Loo and sink all drain separately into the same pipe, I've ran the hot tap on the bath hoping that it's heat up the waste pipe, I've also soaked the U bend in hot water but still no good, ah well it's not the end of the world

Similar problem here.
Waste pipe taking water from the sink, dishwater and washing machine is frozen up so we can't use any of them.

Got ours clear in the end, dismantled as far as I could get, scooping contents into buckets, then shoved a garden fountain pump hose down and sucked out the remaining liquids as far as the ice plug. Added a bag of dishwasher salt to a bucket of near boiling water and sent that down. Took it over an hour but eventually it cleared. Have been adding a good handful of table salt to each flush now to be on the safe side. There will be 15 sleeping here tomorrow and I'd rather not be without that bathroom.

Has anyone tried the boiling water trick yet?

Apparently when the temp drops below -10ish, if you throw a cup of boiling water into the air it produces a mini snow cloud.

For the first time in what seems a month, there is no ice on my car "yet"

Still snow & Ice on the ground, but perhaps the thaw is starting!

stove + water = hot water.

bowl + water in sink = full bowl = less water in sink. Repeat till empty.

Sponge to soak up the last bits.

Hot water into sink.

Flannel wash and hot wet shave. = clean tidy mboy and new job.

Improvise young man.
