[#10078318]

As per thread title, I've just happened upon this while browsing for a birthday present for my daughter, and now I'm fancying a new mp3 player for me... (she'll just be getting some cheap tat)

Almost seem a bit too good to be true as a product, waterproof, designed for running and sporty use, ambient noise mode etc and reasonably priced... Reviews seem a bit thin on the ground so have any STWists tried a pair?

Don't see mine on there - I have this beauty (integral headphones and rechargeable battery). Unfortunately it is a bit knackered as all the plastics have started to become brittle and break up.

I've got the WS414, which is the same thing, with 8GB memory.

I use it for running, it is pretty good. Better than getting tangled up with cables etc. May take a bit of fiddling to get it comfortable in the ears, it includes several different sizes of earbuds.

If you have a lot of music loaded, can be tricky to find a particular song etc. ie you have to go forward/backward 1 folder at a time.

Ambient noise mode is OK, gives you some idea of what's around you. Though does seem a bit directional, sometimes can't hear stuff from behind. And if its windy, that can cause a lot of noise, gets annoying.

That WM-10 is properly smart... I remember the days before phablets where everyone wanted the smallest portable items...

Left side, one up from the bottom but in red.  I think it was only £29 and the build quality was great.  Travelled the world with me and I still had it until i threw out my last tapes (for many years with the battery door held on with gaffer tape).

Always lusted after a Walkman pro.

For the OP - aren't you better off spending similar money on a decent pair of Bluetooth headphones and linking to your phone (in an armband)?  I stopped using a separate Mp3 player years ago since the music i wanted to listen to was never on there.

Same as simons_nicolai. Also in red. Lasted for years.

Then upgraded to a technics 'walkman' and added massive over the ear headphones. Had auto-reverse n'all. Posh eh?!

Oooh, I had several of those

2nd row down, first on the left.

4th row down, 2nd in from left.

5th row down, fourth from the left...

Cheers for the review CraigW, have you ever tried swimming with them?

I'd forgotten - I then had one of these Aiwa's.  Autoreverse, barely larger than a cassette case.  Built in rechargable (or AAAs bolted on). All metal construction.  The red Sony outlasted it.

I had an Aiwa one, very similar to the Sony one with the graphic equaliser mentioned earlier.

The tape deck of course is long gone, but the Aiwa Pipe-Phone headphones I bought around the same time saw regular use until they finally died a few months back from one last cord-snag too many.

I had the Aiwa too, and the walkman second from the right on the bottom row. Posh one, but I spent my whole life walking around listening to it. Still had it when I was a student at university, but long lost now. I wonder what happened to it...

Used to walk around South Manchester in the mid-90s with a pair of expensive Sennheiser headphones. Someone once stopped me and asked if they sounded good, so I offered him a listen. He accepted the offer, agreed that they did indeed sound good and we went our separate ways. I think I was younger back then...

Further to this, a quick Google would suggest I also had that Sony, only in a different colour so I didn't immediately recognise it.  It's apparently the WM-36.

And the Aiwa was the HS-G57.

Fascinating reading, I'm sure you'll agree.

That Aiwa HS-G57 obviously wins.  It had super bass.  none of the others have super bass.

Had quite a few. Had the one flash posted, and it's predecessor that had a black clasp. I remember watching that bounce along the road beneath me as to my surprise the music stopped abruptly, the Walkman having fallen from my belt, while i gurned along on my Raleigh montage, listening to Jean Michel Jarre or something.

I had a wicked Aiwa one which my mate got from HK for me. Was great until I realised Argos had the same one, cheaper. Think I wuz done.

Tapes are making somewhat of a comeback in the retro gear world (ok, so are reel to reels) but try not to get caught up in it as you'll just remember why you hated tapes (sticky, wobbly, knotty horrible things they are). But you'll all remember recording the Top 40 and trying to stop at the end of a song and miss all the talky bits.

Dolby - for when you want everything to sound muffled and unclear.

SA90 FTW!!!

I had a 'Realistic' bought from Tandy. Seemingly built around the same mechanism as the front loading cassette player from a car and about the same size. Took 6 D-Cell batteries - there was absolutely no danger of it ever fitting in a pocket so it came with a broad shoulder strap, or, optionally you could hire a Nepalese porter to carry it about for you.

Coolest kid on the block!

I had a couple of Walkman's. Can't see them on that chart. The most recent one (1996/7?) Was just slightly larger than a cassette box, took a single AA battery and was aluminium. The overly complicated mechanism on the door took a knock and twisted.

I'm sure I've got a Sony MiniDisc Walkman somewhere too.

4th on the bottom row.  Posh one.   Would have loved a yellow one when younger.

Thinking I may need to download some songs today from the era.

Only ever very used a phone for music since my Sony Walkman W810.   One of my favorites although internet was a bit limited.

I worked for a marketing agency who had the Sony audio account at the time. Lots of very cool things came out of that job.

That at sounds like the WM10 I linked to earlier

Oh if we're doing aiwa too I had o e of these:

Oh yea…. and sorry to OP I have never heard what you wish to purchase.

I think we're well beyond the original point of the thread, but I was asking about a modern day "walkman" which is essentially a pair of earphones with an integrated mp3 player, which Sony seems intent on almost not promoting at all...

It's sort of funny and slightly sad looking back in a way, a product which was pretty much a new concept in itself when it came out, which in turned basically spawned, and was all but killed off by the ipod (which is also pretty much dead now, as everyone listens to music on their phone).

I had one of these. Propper nice piece of kit. Took me ages to save up for it and buy it when I was 14.

Pah i I still use an iPod and just modified one from eBay to take a flash card. Mind you the iPod was an upgrade (capacity only) to the hd minidisc I was using in 2010. Mind you only got a smart phone last month which as only made a few calls but is good for podcasts...

I still have my Walkmans, discman, M.D. but sadly not the dab radio that used to eat batteries.

A mix tape gave s different feel to a playlist. Not being able to skip or having to flip the tape an know where on the songs on the other side you had to stop to flip back over for the start of you favourite was an art
