I bought a pint and a lemonade at All Bar One in the Trafford Centre at the weekend (don't judge me, it was prior to going to see Apollo 11 at the IMAX round the corner). I was overjoyed to only be charged almost eight quid for this.

We'll piss and moan about paying £1.30 for a litre of petrol which is dead dinosaurs drilled from the ground, piped for miles, barrelled, distilled, refined, shipped halfway across the world... yet will cheerfully pay twice that for a bottle of water which has literally fallen out of the goddamn sky and is available for free (and more tightly regulated for quality) in almost every household in the country.
It's stuff like this which makes me think the world is going quietly mad.

I agree Cougar. I live about a strong fart away from the bottling plant for Harrogate Water and they are absolutely coining it in and producing millions of plastic bottles a week. Then have the %$*&ing audacity to shout about their green credentials because you can %$£*ing collapse the empties for recycling.

You want to be careful with that. They're not designed to be refilled, it's the Wrong Kind of Plastic.
I found this out the entertaining way. I thought "yeah yeah, buy more water obvs" and kept refilling a Volvic (IIRC, other brands are available) bottle I had in the car. A few weeks in, I took a swig and thought it tasted odd, when I looked the water had turned green!
If you're going to refill bottles either replace them every couple of weeks or buy a bottle specifically designed to be refilled (I'd be amazed if many people on this site would struggle to lay their hands on a bidon).

That's a very good point.
Aluminium Bidons are lined with plastic. I think your green water is more likely to be organic stuff in a dirty bottle producing more toxins than the plastic.

The "don't refill bottles" stuff is due to bacteria not the plastic. The bottle is stable on the shelf for years full of water. Filling and emptying it several times a day is going to result in a far less chemical leaching per fill than the initial contents (and should be zero anyway). But the flexible bottles are a breeding ground for bacteria, but then again most of them have come from your mouth in the first place!
Was the Winnersh triangle one not central reading. Used to live down that way for 10 years or so but occasionally need to visit again for work. No soda gun apparently - only bottles.

The original water will have likely been in there for at least the same few weeks. It's yer mucky spit and/or bugs from the water supply doing the "greenery", surely ? (or something's wrong with the copper piping)
There's a pub not far from me where the barman cheerfully told me my pint of orange juice and lemonade was the most expensive drink they sold.
