Wasn't it an "intestinal infection"? Are they saying it's food poisoning then?
Anyway, the years of hard drinking and smoking probably didn't help...wasn't he just about to have a liver transplant. STW Brazil had a thread going where loads of posters were frothing over an alcoholic getting a liver transplant. The thread got closed today as a mark of respect.
Glad I got to see him play in 82 - though can only barely remember it.

If only we had a supremely gifted footballer in recent history who also needed such a transplant so that we could show those Brazilians our generosity of spirit.

Surely we'll have another bite at that particular cherry in the not too distant.
a large proportion (quarter) of liver transplants are from liver damage caused by alcohol...
he's admitted recently to having a problem with alcohol (so they said on the radio)
spontaneous bacterial peritonitis or pancreatitis maybe ??
(or euphemism for cancer of the somethingorother - is there a big stigma attached to boozin/smerken in brazil ?)
Who cares? He gave huge entertainment to a hell of a lot of people.
All good in my book
