There's nothing like a bland reassuring statement like this to make me feel at ease.

If I stick to major urban areas there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

Erm.... They're not the odds we each have of being hit. They're the odds of a person somewhere in the world being hit.
The odds you and I have of being hit are roughly (1/3,200)/6,700,000,000 = 1/21,440,000,000,000

Indeed, I say the same thing about death due to air travel which is more likely than winning the lottery. Every time I get on a plane a cold hand points at me from the sky and a booming voice says "It could be you".

So according to risk assessment the satellite has loads of titanium expected to survive re-entry (see http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/585584main_UARS_Status.pdf). If a 60kg lump of titanium landed in my back garden is my property?
Could I start milling parts without NASA demanding their broken toy back?

I seem to remember that there is some international salvage law about aircraft that stops you from doing this. Is it in the Warsaw Convention?
