I think they are missing the plot with the cost of living crisis and fiddling whilst Rome burns as they go thru the spectacle of anointing another leader.
Remember who they are looking to win the votes of. The cost of living crisis isn't hitting us all in the same way. The well off retired folk that mostly make up those who have a vote in the leadership election aren't struggling, the party keeps looking after them. And looking past this leadership contest towards the next election... that constituency are really motivated to vote. They are the base. Not the workers or low income retirees worried about eating or heating this winter. Heating or second winter city break perhaps. This is also why every candidate will go in hard on Brexit benefits (without identifying any real ones), whatever they might have said in the past. Keep the old and well off on side.
Don’t forget Texas. She negotiated a trade deal with Texas too
I must have missed that - was it announced on the same day as the whole failing-to-remember-the-names-of-the-breakaway-states-in-the-Donbas-region-and-get-ridiculed-by-Russian-foreign-minister thing?
The well off retired folk
Target market. Enjoys patriotic music, Churchill biographies, and telling people that Thatcher got it all right.
Isn't the voice over on the mordaunt video this guy
The cost of living crisis isn’t hitting us all in the same way
Always worth having this one in the front of your head.
The cost of living crisis isn’t hitting us all in the same way
How hard it’s hitting you is inversely proportional to the likelihood of you voting Tory in the first place, hence their failure to even acknowledge it, never mind address it

John Hurt? I doubt it, he's dead.

Not quite true... Brexit and Johnson reduced that cause/effect pattern for many people... whether that's for good or just for now... who knows.
Just picking... I agree mostly.
And there lies the challenge ahead for whoever wins this... how to keep the people on side that their policies hurt but who might still vote for them... with the silver bullet that is continuously asking to be credited with delivering Brexit, and claiming that all the "good" that gives us will be undone if their party doesn't stay in government. But that's for another day... this leadership campaign is all about the old and comfortable off voting for who will keep the larger world at bay and their metaphorical village green spit and span.
Spectator reporting patel is expected to declare today.
During World at One in R4 earlier a comment that ree-smug is considering standing.
* me rigid.
I hope he does. He's up for going in hard on the other candidates... as a bystander that's what I want to see... no cosy friendly competition... let's see them openly fight while the country is watching more closely. He'll reveal just how nasty he is, while also damaging others. I'd rather this happened while in opposition, because of any knock on damage on our country's reputation... but it needs to happen at some point... if it's now, so be it.
She negotiated a trade deal with Texas too
Stiltons for Stetsons.
With regards to Jo Cox, I'd give Mordaunt the benefit of the doubt here. She helped set up development grants in memory and has spoken on the subject many times since. But Spitfire, Hurricane AND a Lancaster. Irony is dead. I was expecting Jerusalem next.
Bystanders is the right word Kelvin.
Sorry to hammer the 'Logan's Run' analogy but that is exactly what's happening. Less than a tenth of one percent of the population, made up of mostly pensioners and disproportionately white and male are getting to decide who will best ptrotect their pensions and how they are going to force those of working age to believe.
Brexit is the 'Domed City', built to entrap its citizens as much as it is designed to keep people out.
Jonnie Peacock, who wasn’t asked.
The internationally famous girlfriend murdering Oscar Pistorius, chatting to Peacock.
A rozzer, who can’t be in a political video.
Jo Cox, with massively inappropriate voiceover.
WTF did I just watch?!
"Choose them because you trust their motives"

It's I vow to thee, my Country isn't it? Much more properly Nationalistic.
nickc
John Hurt? I doubt it, he’s dead.
I blame the Alien(s)
Well if you are trying to out-Nationalist I'd have raised my game to Jerusalem.
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.
I vow to thee is for amateurs.
Oh, I dunno... at this point in the Brexit process... and embracing the true believers...
The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
Unquestioning support? Paying the price? Keep buggering on...?
I vow to thee is for amateurs.
Nah, it's clever. It was played at Princess Di's wedding (and funeral) so it's a shoo-in for Express readers.
Liz Truss' video gives the impression that Liz Truss is lacking confidence in Liz Truss becoming the next prime minister.
Looking at the videos through my film-making/producing eyes.
Two types -
i) from the ground up films with original footage (Truss/ Sunak)
ii) and basically a raid of the Getty library. (Mordaunt)
The second type is the most disingenuous as they just used tacky stock footage to fill the gaps and are clearly the last minute jobs with voice-over.

EYELINE!
Liz Truss's eyeline is terrible though she's quite clearly reading from a bit of paper rather than a teleprompter - which would have looked 10x better so she could have looked into the camera.
Sunak has stolen some of the music I used on a corporate film years ago. Chancer.
They haven't got Ken Loach so they're screwed.
I'm giving the best award to Truss though because at least it's short and not overblown. Her eyeline is shit though. Wonky honesty.
However I don't think any of these films are particularly slick or good really.

They tell you which candidates have had the time and money to get ready for this though... loyal government ministers my arse...
which would have looked 10x better so she could have looked into the camera
For a normal human. Have you seen her looking straight into the camera....!!!?!

She's technically addressing the audience in those with occasional camera eyes.
She's like a child that's been left on its own.
You know what though - people like flawed characters don't they? That's why we got the other one.
Jeremy Hunt is dangerously close to David Brent. His film doesn't connect at all. he's too stiff.
That Liz Truss video - did someone fit the head on squint?
They haven’t got Ken Loach so they’re screwed.
Ah, I'm sure they could get him for the right price.
After all, he did that film that celebrated us getting tough on benefit scroungers, right? 🙂
I, Rishi Sunak.
Crikey looking at the list of candidates only Penny is my choice as the PM now.
As for the rest do they really believe in their own hype? I mean are they actually leadership quality? Look at them!
As for the oppositions look at yourselves riding the unicorns. Can't you wake up from your dream?
We are in for a rough ride for a while and the bad news is that they are riding us!
I, Rishi Sunak.
Pui! Pui! Pui! (Greek lady spitting LOL!)
Jeremy Hunt has all the charm of a serial killer
People forget he was on watch whilst the NHS was being slowly dismantled - when Covid hit and the NHS wasn't remotely prepared, or even had adequate staff for a normal day, he looked on in utter surprise
Jeremy Hunt has all the charm of a serial killer
LOL! That bloke Hunt is a puppet on the string.
However I don’t think any of these films are particularly slick or good really.
If I was being generous I'd suggest that might be deliberate.
Bit of an anti-elite, 'I could do something like that on my phone', populist play...
If I was being generous I’d suggest that might be deliberate.
Dunno. It's possible. I get pulled between Tiktok gasping and corporate formula so it's possible.
I would say the slickest production with the most human character would win the day.
To be fair, I'm not feeling generous.
All I actually see is 'that'll do - the plebs will lap it up' thoughtlessness and contempt.
Pork markets never fails to crack me up 🤣
As predicated loooong ago... (and not just by our pro Tump pro Putin friend) ...rolling back on green objectives and measures about to become key in the leadership campaign... and possibly for the next election.
"However I don’t think any of these films are particularly slick or good really."
Remember, these films aren't aimed at the likes of you and me, (unless you are a 70 year old Tory party member who fought so bravely in WW2).
Yup, as mentioned earlier this is aimed at the .29% of the population that have a say. They're mostly over 60, mostly southern english, mostly male and almost entirely white. They'd have to be crazy to make videos and statements that appeal to the public. The public's opinion is irrelevant to who we get as the next PM.
For patriotc songs we need to borrow the italian or Argentine anthems. Iirc all about blood and gore
That 0.29% of the population is lording it over the rest of us like the supreme court is in the States. Only they weren't even nominated, all they had to do is pay a couple of squids subscription.
I can't think of another example where power has been bought so cheaply. The bang they get from their buck is of nuclear proportions.
I keep meaning to join but never get around to it
I can’t think of another example where power has been bought so cheaply.
In terms of results I think whilst more costly, donations to the party and specific mps give a better return.
I can’t think of another example where power has been bought so cheaply.
On the other hand, it's £25 each, which would be a lot of money for their campaign if another few million signed up.
So far I'm concerned, 'we' (the electorate, not most of STW) elected a majority of Tory MPs, and the democratic route would be to allow those MPs to select their leader. Most of them are smarter than we think (although that wouldn't be hard) and their nonsensical public utterances are aimed at their supporters.
"'we’ (the electorate, not most of STW) elected a majority of Tory MPs, and the democratic route would be to allow those MPs to select their leader"
Absolutely. What we are watching isn't democracy in action, it's democracy in destruction.
I wish Newsnight and the like understood this and actually reported what is going on for what it is, rather than what it isn't. If you want to see democracy in action you'd do better to tune in to 'Love Island.'
When the result comes in, do they announce it by releasing blue smoke from Conservative Party Central HQ?
They have set a minimum of 20 backers now in order to be considered. It would seem to be a 1 horse race currently with only young Rishi having the quota needed.
Let the lobbying bribery and corruption start - I want/need your support and will, of course, look favourably on you should I be granted the honour of leading this great parhy of ours...ad nauseam.
Steve Baker is good for a laugh - backing Braverman, being a Brexit cheerleader and then having the audacity to complain about culture wars - chapeau sir! 😂
