Started watching BlacKkKlansman last night. Pretty bloody good. Based on the true story of a black cop going undercover to expose the KKK in the 70s. You may wonder how a black dude can achieve that …

If you can get it....

Color Out of Space

SF/horror..
Great visuals and genuinely pretty different from most in a crowded genre. Best film Cage has been in, in a while too.👍

Watched 1917 last night. Awesome.

Also Shape of Water. Saw it at the cinema last year and thought it was excellent but daughter wanted to watch it so watched it last week.

Watched a lot of mediocre/average stuff lately. Of the ones that I didn't fall asleep through:

I Am Mother
Mother
Prospect
Joker
The Lighthouse
Paradise Hills (A missed opportunity. The reveal and ending should have been much darker and unpalatable without the silly fairy tale villain, Buffy like teen series feel, shame)

Will be watching:

Tigers Are Not Afraid
Midsommar
Inheritance
Greener Grass
Rojo
The Cave

Best recentish comedy series IMO is Motherland.

The Professor and the Madman.

Who'd have thought a film about writing a dictionary could have been so captivating.

One of those where I immediately had to look up the story to verify its authenticity once the credits started rolling. Would love to know more about the actual evernts.

Terminator Dark Fate.

The internet said it was all woke and PC but I really enjoyed it. Sarah Connor’s entrance was awesome, the de-aging CGI worked very well, Carl talking about his curtains got me laughing.

The only bit that bothered me was how obnoxious the augmented lesbian was, especially after Sarah saved both their lives with ease. But she did the decent thing in the end so I won’t hold it against her.

If you want to watch a film with a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the classic Local Hero is on All 4 just now.

The best film I’ve seen recently, with a shadow of a doubt, is Pedro Almodóvar’s Dolors y Gloria (Pain & Glory). I’m a big fan of almodóvars any ways but this is just so human... I’d also recommend his Tie me up! tie me down!, Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Julieta, Al about my mother and (especially) Volver.

I picked up quite a few things in an end of year round up (inc Midsomer) but 5he standout for me was Roma. I really need to see that on something other than a MacBook screen...

For fans of pretty girl kick ass I enjoyed Columbiana (featuring the green woman from Guardians of the Galaxy). Absolute pish, entertainment.

Oh, I also enjoyed Avengers Assemble...

Another firm favourite of mine is Arrival. Watched it heaps of times...

Once my hdmi cable arrives I’ll be sure to let you know.

There’s more chance of me rewatching Roma than Midsomer, people with different taste. Who knew, eh?

Rewatched Logan last night. Forgot how good it was. I know it’ll probably be hated by most because it’s a superhero movie, but I think it’s brilliant. A classic hero’s journey/western/samurai movie pulled off spectacularly well.

Just watched Fighting with my Family. Typical low key British stuff, but good story and I'll admit to blubbing my way through it. Think I'm a bit sensitive at the moment 😭

Just watched Independence Day (the first one) and had forgotten what a great film it was at the time (huge plot holes accepted.) I remember seeing it on release and I think it was the first thing I’d seen Will Smith in.
I won’t bother eith ID Resurgence again though.

Totally. A genuinely great film that just happens to have superheroes in it.

I watched Jexi on Amazon last night.

It didn't half make me laugh. Very welcome that was too

We watched Terminator Dark Fate last night. It was just the right kind of mindless action nonsense that we were looking for to accompany a Bank Holiday takeaway.

And if people are complaining it's too 'woke' because it has strong female lead characters, then, well, that's their problem.

And, unless I missed something, just cos she's got short hair doesn't make her a lesbian.

Yes, fighting with my family is excellent.

One of the best British comedies I've seen in years.

Can't believe no-one has mentioned the "Hot Tub Time Machine yet?" So bad it's not even good, its even worse than bad.

If you want a crass comedy that works then check out "Twin Town". Like Monty Python, generations of Welsh people can recite random lines from the film to fit most situations. Who can forget the response to Fatty falling off the ladder.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but "The Chaser" is one of those films I happened upon by accident, had never heard of, but was gripped from start to finish. It is a dark Korean thriller and definitely worth a watch if you like a grim/violent who-dunnit film.

Agreed. Lots of themes you don't generally find as part of a superhero movie, with superb performances from Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman.

It's a shame that knowing some of the background of the characters is helpful, as opposed to it being a standalone film.

"Life Itself" on Now tv/Sky.

Really well put together movie. Don't want to spoil it by saying too much here but well worth watching.

I went in to it with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised. A really great little film. Agree on fighting with my family too and glad to see some love for Logan.

It wasn't Knives Out that's for sure. Was expecting big things after decent reviews - bored me rigid.

Boss! The plane....!

Well one of the benefits of a career as a reviewer of stuff for a tiny newspaper group is that some people don't know the group closed and you still get review downloads of stuff and samples.
This came out of the blue for tonight. It could be in this thread but I can't guarantee it shouldn't be in the other...

Saw Goldmember for the first time since it was released. Laughed a lot and wondered why Myers gave up doing stuff like that. Maybe the Shrek money is too easy.

I watched and thoroughly enjoyed Blinded By The Light on Amazon last night. It doesn't develop the characters much outside of the central one, but the story is good. It's a shame though, I'm not sure my wife would be able to enjoy it as the racism bits will ring so familiar to her childhood.

The Battleship Island (also on prime) is just bloody fantastic. How Korean cinema manages to make films so bleak and harrowing and yet still put enough humour in to make you giggle occasionally astounds me. Someone mentioned The Chaser further up the thread, that's another fine example.

'Skin' on amazon is brilliant. Jamie Bell is outstanding playing a white supremacist.True story and hard to watch in parts. The story does sound very similiar to American History X but its probably a better film overall.
