Not a Twitter user anyway so not really of any interest, is it not just another Meta data-mining exercise though?

Deleted my Twitter account the other day, and this is really just pushing me to delete my (untouched for a couple of years) Instagram account as well.

Not yet waiting for more data on the amount of data scraping. Particularly waiting to see if it will comply with the EU digital marketing act and what difference there will be between Threads EU and Threads UK.

I thought this thread was going to be about the film, Threads.

But it's a thread about a thread I've never heard of.

Fair point. But we already know twitter won't be complying. The great Musk has pronounced it so already. If you're avoiding both, that makes sense.

Damn. Was hoping for another stw fashion advice ("I'm not into fashion I'm into style" = flock wallpaper shirt + moleskin trews that can stand up independently of wearer + last year's 5.10s. At best) thread. A threads thread not a Threads thread.

Already left Twitter

Your position makes perfect sense then. Can't imagine Meta will be exactly reluctant to harvest data in Threads... and they'll probably be far more efficient at it than Twitter.

Testing…

Oh well. No Previews here, yet.

Look at the data types it requests for the mobile apps and then make a decision.

TL;DR: It wants it all.

Yep, joined to see what the fuss is all about. You cannot (as far as I can see) just search for stuff. You can search for people. But you can't for instance search "tdf" to see what's occuring now in the tour. That's something I use Twitter for.

Nah, passed on Twitter, will pass on this thanks.

Begrudgingly kept a Facebook account as I have a couple of mates who I would lose touch with if I didn't have one.

I keep my Singletrack account because you're all a decent bunch and there's always some good info + PSAs to read when I'm bored at work.

Apart from that I try and keep away from (anti)social media.

What's the doing word?

Twitter -> Tweet/ Tweeting / Tweeted.

Threads ->............?

A thread of threads would be a yarn maybe?

All sounds a but ropey

Complaining about Meta harvesting data is like complaining about Tesco selling groceries.  It's the whole point of the company. But, we do get something in return.

Have joined for the LOLs, but while it's like Instagram, with no ability to get strict chronological feed of those you follow (and injects ads/suggestions), I'm unlikely to use it.

Got rid of Facebook many years ago, and only use Twitter these days. Whilst I enjoy following various people, if Twitter dies a death so be it - I won't be actively looking to replace, and certainly can't be bothered signing up to Threads.

Just think that the negatives now far outweigh the positives.

So far it has all the same failings as Meta’s other products… far too much “we think you’ll like…” drowning out the “conversations with people you’ve chosen to follow”. Hope that changes as more people join. Doubt it will though.

Always found the needle & thread icons people used on twitter as some sort of show of intellectual prowess more than cringey enough.

Isnt the internet now basically just one big data mining exercise?

The register put together a nice summary on all the data the app wants from users (and for what purposes). Seems like quite a list and means isn't too surprising it's not going into the EU just yet.

I suspect that they've considered this essential to get people engaged in the early days, at least until their users have established their own networks. Whether it changes or not, who knows.

Twitter have also very much went down this route recently, although they do give you the choice now.

Is that much different to other apps or social media sites?

+1

I know they want to suck you in for hours by making the scrolling endless, but it would be nice if you could set it to not.

Occasionally it'll throw up a really funny cartoon that I'll then follow, but 99% of it is derivative re-posted dross.

I joined as left Twitter when Musk took over and keep thinking of going back....

Hopefully at somepoint this will be as big or takeover. If all the or just half of insta users it'll dwarf Twitter.

They want all my financial information? **** right off!
Apparently, if you’re on Instagram, and you decide you don’t want Threads and delete it, that’ll delete all your instagram stuff too, in fact it’ll delete your account.

Just how are they going to get all your financial information?

Not quite. You can delete your Threads account but as it shares data with instagram, to get rid of your data you need to skate that too.

The only social media platforms, other than here, I’ve ever joined are Facebook and LinkedIn. Both of them lasted less than a week. I also thought this thread was about anything other than what it is. Loose threads on clothing, tight threads on a bolt, clothing advice, that nightmare fuel TV programme that my therapist tells me not to think about, how to manoeuvre a bike between tightly packed trees etc.

In short, could’ve picked a better name. Also, as above if you tweet on Twitter what do you do on threads?

Thread

No, the conversation as a whole will be the thread. Individual posts will have to be threats.

Twitter > Tweet
Threads > Threat

Makes perfect sense

I see musk claims Meta having cunningly employed ex Twitter employees to build Threads. But how? Surely ex-Twitter employees must be in such short supply. I mean there can’t just be thousands of them milling about out there looking for work.
