I must be old. When I was a child, people didn’t consume things before they’d actually paid for them and children were behaved in supermarkets through discipline rather than bribery or pacification.
You might be old, but it’s your terrible memory that makes you think like that, rather than your age directly.
And there weren’t any supermarkets when I was a kid, but I didn’t let that stop me behaving like a little shit in normal shops.
I don’t see that the kid was being disobedient. They were given a banana. They ate it. The parent tried to pay for it.

The vinegar I am currently using is Waitrose own brand in a square/cube bottle. Excellent taste and syrupy (unlike the watery stuff) Also reduced from £15 to £10 if via Ocado.
I've always assumed Balsamic Vinegar was like washing up liquid.
There's no functional reason why washing up liquid needs to produce bubbles, or come in 500ml/1000ml bottles, or be viscous (or even a liquid). But people associate viscosity with quality, and don't like to think that the amount of actual chemicals in washing up liquid is just a tiny fraction of the volume (the rest is thickened water).
Balsamic Vinegar is the same.
Ocado only actually sell one real balsamic vinegar, and it's £55 for 100ml! It's not the stuff bought by middle classes to slosh on their sweet potato chips and dip a bit of sourdough ciabatta in (guilty).
Everything else is a mix of wine vinegar, grape must and thickeners and is labeled as "Balsamic vinegar of Modena" (usually in Italian to make it sound posh), or "Balsamic Condiment" if it's made elsewhere.
That's not to say some bottles aren't better than others, but it's viscosity is basically down to how much cornflour and guar gum they added, nothing to do with quality or taste.

Nope, I have done the Aldi / Lidl thing and gave up on it as most of what they sell is crap. It appears cheap until you realise you haven't managed to buy enough to make any decent meals from and have to go to another supermarket where they actually sell all the stuff you need.

There's a lot of stuff going on there to convince you of it's quality. Most people have heard of "the Pepsi challenge", but you can even do the same thing with red and white wine. Most people can't tell the difference when blindfold (and remember that 50% of people would get that test right just by guessing), but just like being an above average driver, most people self report that they definitely could tell real Coke form Pepsi, tell red from white and are definitely and above average driver.
Waitrose - just like any other supermarket only dearer.
From personal experience Tesco are the worst for food quality, but our local huge place (Burnley) is great for household stuff, good pharmacy, games, books and electricals.
Asda much better for food and the big ones (Rawtenstall) are great for games, books etc.
Morrisons - pointless but food very good.
Sainsburys - clothes. Food ok.
Waitrose - ok, spendy.
Booths - upmarket Morrisons.
M&S - love the food, can be good value. Clothes have gone full Partridge.
Aldi and Lidl. Yup, love it. Just plan a few meals and buy what you need. Too much choice makes me grumpy, as it means I have to be in there longer than necessary.
I like the food quality.
But mostly because I can walk or ride my bike there and back through the park. 🙂

Maybe to you but I just taste the different types and brands and then make a decision. The thicker and sweet tasting balsamic vinegar tastes nicer to me. Just happens that it tends to be the more expensive ones.
The cheap ones are watery and taste more vinegary. If the £3 bottle tasted as nice I would buy the £3 bottle.
Back to the OPs point, I don't drink the balsamic vinegar as I am going around the supermarket.

I'd just be my happy my kids eaten a banana and sort out any confusion at the checkout. Because Tesco do free fruit, there's an Assocation now between being in the trolley in a shop and getting a banana!

Exactly. There isn't one in my town sadly, but the last time I was in one, I went in for a pre-packed sandwich and some crisps and came out with a pair of rigger boots, a starter oil painting set with easel and a firemans axe.
Morrison's is great if you are in the mood for scotch eggs and pork pies, but the ones I have used seem to have used Alan Sugar computing technology with regard to the self service checkout.

Food is good, but limited. Not many places, ok for emergencies but frustrating to find anything apart from basics. Good bakery, meat and fish. Variable cafes. 😶.
Problem is Aldi does this all better apart from the bakeries and the caffs.
As I live in Burnley. I'me never more than 50 feet away from a pie shop, so nothing appeals.
When Lidl opened in Tod, you could hear the cheering for miles. 🙂

Do M&S actually sell ‘food’ now? Every time I’ve been in they only seemed to sell microwave meals in fancy boxes for all those poor stressed out Boomers who struggle to knock up a meal in between spending their morning in the doctors and afternoons in the Post Office?
As for ‘in my day’ I working in Tesco 25 years ago, people would eat and shop all the time, as long as they gave the barcode to scan it was no biggie. Wish they would stop eating grapes though, no one cared they ate more than they paid for - that’s why the self-weigh grapes cost twice as much as the pre-weighed ones, no grapes on a heavily waxed floor are like Teflon coated ice, we’d have old ladies going over left, right and centre.
