[#4486549]

Right, my youngest has decided he wants an iPad mini [if it does actually exist] for his birthday, sight unseen .... I know, I know

so tell me, apart from camping out at an Apple store like an excited teenage girl waiting for a Justin Bieber show, do they generally make stuff available for online orders/pre-orders straight away after announcing it?

I was expecting it to be a couple of weeks before it's available but didn't really want to miss the first batch so wondered about pre-ordering etc.

I imagine it will be available to pre-order/order after the announcement.

I've seen a rumour that they'll be available from 2nd November. As ever, we'll know for sure tonight; keep that store page on auto-refresh....

I'm sure they will allow pre-order once it's announced, that's been their normal mode of operation.

If I were you I'd wait for the announcement and then make a model/cost comparison between the mini / iPad2 and iPad3. If the mini is well priced it will make sense, Apple have a juggling act as it's in direct competition with lower priced devices but demand will be very strong.

The conversation regarding waiting, comparing and evaluating has been had and done to death, 16 yr olds simply don't see it like I do 😀

I'll be ordering a Mini

I assume that Apple have re-defined the "inch"? Apparently, seven of the standard inches are too small for an iPad.

I'm sure Apple isn't the first to redefine the length of 7 'inches'. 😆

i cant see em calling it a minipad either but if an STWer can come up with it im sure a comedian with a larger fan base can put it out there as well.

No.
I assume that Apple have re-defined the "inch"? Apparently, seven of the standard inches are too small for an iPad.

And as Apple have never admitted to the existence of a smaller iPad, any sizes quoted have been purely media speculation. As many smaller pads have a 7" screen, analysts and bloggers have been saying the 'iPad Mini' will be 7", while others who are a bit more savvy have said it'll be 7.85", which makes more sense, as that's close to the size of a paperback book page.
This smaller Pad makes more sense for youngsters, and it'll be a great thing to use with OS maps, using Viewranger or UK Map. I can see it being incorporated into car entertainment and navigation systems too, a dash mount with CoPilot or TomTom installed would be really nifty.

• Thin and light and over 275,000 apps
• iPad mini is not a dumbed-down, tiny screen, consumption-only tablet
• 7.9-inch screen (diagonal), 1024×768 – no apps need to be rewritten; everything works unchanged
• Screen size is very important
• comes in black or white
• thin as a pencil, light as a pad of paper
• 7.2 mm thin, 0.68 lbs.

Guess if you have current connectors you're gonna have to buy a converter - £28?

A 6 month gap is pretty appalling. They must have at the very least been planning this one when they released the 3rd gen, knowing they were doing everyone over
