so the f1 on sky... is it going to be on one of the normal basic sky channels that everyone will get or only shown on a sports channel you have to pay extra for?
It'll most likely be on a subscription package channel with added PPV fees, then they can charge higher prices for the more popular venues &/or use it as part of a 'sign up deal' for new customers.
The one-eyed nature of some of the comments isn't garnering much sympathy. I wish they'd get more football back.
well..... that's disappointing, one of my best mates birthdays today and he's a HUGE F1 fan, im going to need to source a lot of boobs to cheer him up today.
How huge is he Philly?
There is hope for fans yet as the new deal may infringe upon the teams’ contract with Bernie Ecclestone.Whitmarsh said last month: “Our current contracts require that F1 remain on free-to-air and the teams, through FOTA, are clearly going to safeguard their business interests and the interests of the fans in this regard.”

Phil, it's spelt 'sauce' not ' source'.
I absolutely love F1, but there is absolutely no way I'm going to line the pockets of **** murdock in order to watch it.
+1
so another award winning production is hacked, so that quality limited stations like bbc alba can run? The beeb has a reputation for quality, but if they continually surrender to murdoch's empire then soon there won't be anything greater than Eastenders, Bargain Hunt and Doctors on our screens.
For those who can't afford sky payments, and F1 is the only thing on TV i watch nowardays. Pfft
The Death of F1 for me!
It is far too much money and you sort of wonder why the beeb feel the need to send separate crews out to cover the radio and TV coverage, I'm fairly sure they could do a bit of consolidation there
IIRC the production costs for each GP averaged out at around £700K

+ another 1
So we'll have to pay to watch Sky? Err no thanks.
Plus, will BBC get to show the INTERESTING races or the processions?
Oh FFS, they ARE NOT SURRENDERING TO MURDOCH.
BSkyB isn't a Murdoch empire BTW, he controls slightly less than 40% of it and the way things have gone recently, it won't get any bigger any time soon
Shit news for all F1 fans.
It was crap on ITV, it will be crap on Sky
Money talks innit?
Loving the gnashing and tortured wailing on this. 😆 Football fans have had to either pay Sky or make do with R5L and MOTD for years now. Grow a set and MTFU, it's not the end of the world.
Thing is I can't see sky broadcasting 1 hour 45 minutes (plus more at times) without an ad break and ITV proved that didn't work.
The highlights might be fine for some but I like watching the whole thing not someone else's idea of the best bits.
Blame Ecclestone not BBC/Sky
Still live races on the BBC website.
Only the ones they are broadcasting on television.
Races screened by the BBC will be live on the BBC Sport website for UK users.
Well the BBC has been dumbing down for years and years. Surely you've noticed that, sure you have. It started with Eastenders and fell from there.
F1's niche, simple. If you want niche then pay for it. It really is just a bunch of carbon droning around and around. The only decent event they hold is Monaco where some driver skill is involved. F1's become a Hire Car thrash around tarmac..
I say if it frees up money for other sports the BBC want to air then WHOOOP!! bring that on pwleeease.
Indeed you can as they sell that footage too so see some return.
Like I said, it's about providing a service primarily, not returning a profit.
I thought Monaco was the one where almost no overtaking at all. Seems that "overtaking" makes F1 fans have mini-orgasms. I say YAY...more money to spread out and show diverse sports. And maybe some cash to rescue the Asian Network.

Why is Monaco the only circuit where driver skill is required?
And this money saved from showing a 'niche' sport - what other 'niche' sport can they spend the money on instead?
AR5E & AR5E again, have been a fan for as many years as I have been able to follow it, probably 35 years, my kids are too. ITV and the ads was a pain, this season & this commentary team (even Eddie to some extend) have been at least as good as any & now I am stuffed.
Can I go to the Grand Prix? Nope massively expensive, do I want sky sports? Not really I watch too much tv anyway and don't want the temptation of all the extra stuff to get hooked on. If its pay to view on top of normal sky sports then it is certainly a no.
I don't blame the Beeb, the cost is huge, I do blame the greed of the F1 machine, Bernie is hugely rich, his companies make massive money, will they make more with less viewers paying more? They seem to think so, personally I would prefer making smaller amounts off more.
Whinge over, back to listening to Ant & Crofty on the web
FFS!!! Why on earth is this the BBCs fault. I refer the right honourable gentleman to my earlier answer
The problem here isn't the BBC. The problem is the monumental and limitless greed of the organisations that run sport. In this case Bernie Eccleston. Their woefully short-sighted attitude means they sell to the highest bidder every single time. With no other consideration.
The BBC can't compete. Full stop! Unless you want your license fee to resemble.... oh, I don't know.... let me pluck a figure from the air.... A full Sky Sports subscription!
The only decent event they hold is Monaco where some driver skill is involved
If you think there is no skill involved in driving an F1 car on any circuit at all, you're seriously misinformed
If it was that easy why don't they just get anyone to drive them, even mega tight arses like Eddie Jordan had to shell out millions to get the best drivers he could. If he could have got away with using a kid on minimum wage, he would
The BBC cannot win - there has been loads of complaints from outraged of tunbridge wells about the cost of screening F1.
Binners & TJ +1
there's a first 🙂
It's a big lump of money and hard to justify for certain
However, it brings in more viewers than the 10 o'clock or 6 o'clock news so maybe that could go first? 🙂
There are plenty of other sports the BBC could, but choose not to, air.
Local sports, local people taking part, good start. For instance what about the MTB stuff that bearly gets airtime? What about sticking a camera at the top of Glentress and watching fatties fall down hills on bikes (that was a joke BTW) but they could do that couldn't they?
For sure there is a market in niche airtime sports. Go along to any windsurfing/kitesurfing shop in the UK and you will find shelves FULL of DVD's, go along to any proper MTB shop and you'll find DVD's of fatblokes hoooning down Glentress (joke again)
If, if the BBC wants to promote sports that "people" take part in then for sure we have a mass of participation events happening all over the country on a weekend, most weekends in fact.
I would much prefer the BBC used my fee to promote healthy lifestyle participation events than a niche sport like F1.
I'm sorry but I do, and I've sympathy for all F1 fans on here too, but you pays yer money and you takes yer choice.
Local sports, local people taking part, good start
Ah yes the coites down at The Dog and Duck.
Damned shame, the wheels will come off the commercial side of F1 when viewing figures drop to the exent that on car and trackside advertising money drops off a cliff. The teams won't get money and Bernie will also see a drop in his trackside income.
A lot of the new circuits are subsidised by the respective governments of those countries in order to promote themselves - if audience figures drop and no one sees it, why will those govt's continue to stump up such huge fees to host the events. That's why I thought that ree to air was a priority, obviously not now....
Is it shown free down under, anyone know?
For sure there is a market in niche airtime sports
Over a quarter of a million people attended the GP at Silverstone this year, that is not a niche sport
Whether you're taking part or shelling out hundreds to get in and watch is irrelevant
am i the only one sitting here thinking 'but how is the F1 a niche sport?' its huge all over the world.
watching the devonshire darts championship, the manchester canals fishing finals or the kettering kite flying cup doesnt have anywhere near the appeal to me.
Any idea which races they won't show? If it is the ones on late into the night then i've no problem with it. This year's coverage has been spoilt by the new commentary team so i hope they get bought by Sky.
I guess this is a result of the new licence fee settlement, e.g. the govt saying there will be no increase in the fee and they need to cut lots of things to save money.
If it is the ones on late into the night then i've no problem with it.
There aren't any that race late into the night in the UK - unless you call 5pm 'late into the night'. One or two earlier starts (like the Chinese GP) that's all.
Within ten years there will be no sporting event of any consequence at all on terrestrial telly. Guaranteed!
Do you think that right now, for example, the suits at the Lawn Tennis Association are not looking jealously at the what Sky have just paid for F1, and thinking what huge salaries they could pay themselves if they took Murdochs blank cheque in return for the Wimbledon TV rights?
if they got rid of the tennis, boat race, marathon and football (anything i dont watch) could we have more f1 coverage?
same with all tv shows apart from science, nature and interesting documentaries.
Isn't Wimbledon one of the protected events? i.e. it has to remain on terrestrial.
Same as boat race, world cup and grand national?
No! You can have Crown Green Bowling though
The thing that always gets me about this sort of thing is the way the bbc (for example) try to talk as if it's fantastic news. There's a statement from someone at bbc sport along the lines of ' it's great that we've signed this brilliant new agreement to provide excellent coverage' which is clearly a load of arse, whereas if they'd said 'yeah, it's not great, but it was really expensive, so it was this or nothing - at least this way we get some of the more well known races, it'll have to do' then people would probably be a bit more understanding. It's like banks closing branches or reducing opening times and saying it's 'to provide a better service to all our customers' - no it isn't, it's because it obviously didn't make commercial sense to run your businesses like that, which is fine but don't be so bloomin' patronising about it.
Are you aware who's side the present government are on grantus? They want to scrap all media regulation. How long do you think 'protected' sporting events will last? They'll just say that 'protecting sporting events is anti-competitve and illegal under EU competition law blah blah blah
Then the whole lot gets sold to Sky
..so windsurfing/kitesurfing/MTB are not niche sports then??I would much prefer the BBC used my fee to promote healthy lifestyle participation events than a niche sport like F1.
good idea there is thousands every weekend compeating in grassroutes motorsport.. Rallying , circuit racing, sprints , hillclimbs, dirt and tarmac ovals, MX, enduro, road racing, trails....make some good telly that lot...If, if the BBC wants to promote sports that "people" take part in then for sure we have a mass of participation events happening all over the country on a weekend, most weekends in fact
Allrighty I'm wrong (erm). Seriously Silverstone got 250,000 people in it on the Sunday to watch it?.. really..? well I'll be blowed.
You can still go and watch it there though yeah, I mean there will still be an F1 event at Silverstone but it might mean you go along and queue up to get in and watch it..
Fine by me, you could avoid the queues by cycling there.
Dog and Duck Darts with "Fat Phil" and "Dangerous Doris" sounds great.. Hook up a handy cam and air it primetime.
I must admit one thing, if it wasn't for the engineering skills we have in this old country then F1 would probably not exsist, for that reason I really do hope the sport carries on. And I do have a mate who provides one off carbon bits to the Williams team, I hope he continues to do so.
Tell me, have they tried biofuels yet?
