Apparently the thieves "didn't know what they had" and tried to sell bits of it off cheap on the street . . . .
Is there a Darwin type award for bike thieves?

Once they got all the crack and speed out of the downtube it wasn't worth anything to them.

Its a bit like that guy a few years ago. He has cycled around the world several times over, arrives in britain, ties his bike to the guideropes of his tent and voila, in the morning his bike is gone! When the thieves found out who's it was they quickly returned it!
