Mine's now got two sunglasses holders, one on each side. That's proper luxury that is.

Most of us just call them doors.

Takes a bit more persuasion than you’ll want to exert on your nice new luxury car but it’s ok in the end.

You weren't kidding! Fitted mine today, thanks for the link.

Well, the timing chain was apparently fine as were the guides, but the tensioner had failed. £500 to fix, but the warranty has paid half. So I think I am now ahead - they've paid me more than I've paid them.

I figured out what the juddering/vibration was. Having cleaned the MAF, the idle speed was every so slightly higher which meant that it vibrated at idle once warm. This allowed me to track it down. I thought it was the engine cover at first, which was a little loose so I put tape around the little knobbles it clips to which made it more secure. But then I realised that it was actually the air intake tube, the flimsy piece before the air filter that was vibrating and booming. This is held up by a clip to the plastic bit at the front of the engine bay which I'd tried to secure before but failed. This time I just stuffed a piece of high density closed cell foam under it, which both raised and secured it - done. Much smoother at idle and even a bit better driving.

Bit of an oversight on the part of the designers, I reckon. There's no need for the plastic to be that flimsy.

Well, it's a conclusion of sorts. The judder was the first issue I noticed, it's point 5 on the first page!

Are you sure your high density foam won't melt when the engine bay gets hot? I came up with a 'solution' in an engine bay once that did, with a similar material ... on the plus side it just melted rather than burst into flames. Just saying.

Yeah I worried a bit about that, but it's right at the front by the bonnet catch so not near anything hot.

It was sold (cheaply) and is apparently still running. Needed a new CV joint boot last MOT

I considered doing that when the Aircon specialist told me the evaporator was damaged. Fortunately they were wrong and it wasn't, but not before they drained the refrigerant and we did a whole summer holiday without AC including the first few days of that heat wave.

There are couples celebrating their golden wedding anniversaries who have had less complicated or eventful relationships than you and that car.

Whereas the Passat is always there at the back of your mind. The childhood sweetheart that you sometimes think of whimsically in quiet moments

What could have been…

I kept a numberplate from the Passat, I'm going to hang it on my wall like you see in those American themed restaurants only with more personal significance.

I miss my Citroen Dyane.

Easier to work on than my bike.
Probably fewer components too.

Tool kit consisted of a screwdriver, a grease gun (kingpins) and an adjustable spanner.
