[#6000657]

Currently in a playpark, a middle 50s gentleman with a large tum & a cane lights up a fag whilst pushing his grandchild on the swings, do I
A. Say something and risk crossed words & possibly fisticuffs with a Neanderthal.
B. Be British, say nothing & walk to other side of playpark.
C. Get my 3yr old daughter to shout 'smokers stink' at the top of her voice.

Fisticuffs with a 50 year old? It's more likely that he'll call his crew to do you over.

jekkyl - What exactly is offending you?

Is it exposing the children to the poisons from his fag?

Or is it smoking in front of children will encourage them to smoke in the future?

Personally I think it is none of your business and would hope the bloke would tell you to **** off if you said anything.

When i challenged a guy about this - also grandparent about this age - he replied , in front of all the children - dont be so ****ing soft

He was pushing the child from the front on a swing with the fag in hos mouth exhaling in their face.

I enquired what was soft about not wanting lung cancer or to exhale into a childs face....I did resist saying wont you think of the children ๐Ÿ˜€

you will never guess his next reply!!*

Away at the fence I have no real issue but near my kids and I am not a happy bunny.

Its is one of those, like the parking, if someone is as daft as do this they are unlikely to respond to reason as this thread [s]will no doubt show.[/s] EDIT :is already showing.

* I left at this point and another parent came and removed his fag and it got ugly. They have made them all non smoking recently in my area.

illegal in this neck of the Australian woods - large signs in all play areas mean that folks find it harder to argue the toss - of course like all "no smoking" signs they are optional for social retards

Shouldn't you be giving your 3 yr old your full attention rather than typing away on phone tablet etc

I'm fairly sure the play areas around here also have no smoking signs. Personally I'd go for option C though - is just about perfect.

exposing everyone to the disgusting stench.

Are you nostrils really that sensitive?

How do you cope with multi-storey car park stair wells?

London in the summer when the drains are getting a bit smelly?

Driving past a pig farm?

Got kids? Personally I find mine quite happy to play by themselves a lot of the time in the park - and I sit around without much to do.

Junkyard that takes some doing! Considering the kid is moving with a constant flow of air over their face, not sure how the smoke would go into their face? How do you push a child from the front without pushing them off the swing?

If you left how do you know that last sentence is true?

I don't think many of his sentences are true, sounds like he has exaggerated/made up the tale to me.

Op, when walking past a pub at any particular town on any particular day you will see many people huddled outside enjoying their nicotine fix.
Do you cross the road when you encounter these reprobates?
Do you get your kid to start your fights?
Do you say nothing and complain on forums?

No.

I am suggesting you are an internet keyboard warrior who would never say anything to anyone in that manner and that your anecdote is a fabrication.

Stairwells/outside pubs/London, I might reasonably expect these places to smell bad and I chose or otherwise to go there. I don't think I should reasonably expect people smoking fags in playgrounds.

My anecdote?

Its not my anecdote. You are suggesting that it is impossible to push a kid from the front on a swing without pushing them off, so I, quite reasonably, asked if you were thick.

Your response has answered my question. Thank you. Have a great day licking the windows clean in your house.

Why not?

Apart from you finding the smell offensive what harm is it doing?

Fair enough I didn't read the author.

I must be thick then as I still can't see how it works? However, I have no recent experience of childrens playgrounds but when I was a child I cannot remember getting a push from someone standing in front of me. Which part of the child do you push from the front? Genuine question.

Typically their legs/feet, though if they're of an age to need pushing (and appreciate pushing from in front) then they're likely in a caged swing, and you just push the swing. I'm not sure you've thought this through very well, as how do you push from behind without pushing them off the swing, and how is it different? Push mine from the front all the time.

Additional survey question: how old are your kids (ie how recent experience do you have)?

Given the very well known damage caused by passive smoking it's pretty anti-social behaviour...

I don't quite get the "mind your own business" angle - the guy's basically waving poison around and making other people breath it in. That kind of is everyone else's business

Fundamentally it's just a shame he doesn't have the emotional intelligence to understand the effect his habit has on other people and wait to have a fag at a later moment...

I can't believe how many people think it's okay to smoke in a playpark full of babies and toddlers, it's gross.

I've witnessed this before too, and always considered that it's not cricket.

However, a short exposure like this in an open space isn't likely to do them any long term harm is it? They're probably more likely to suffer the effects on the lungs from diesel particulates from passing cars on the walk to the park.

Passive smoking in the open, moving air, are you serious? How is anyone going to inhale any significant quantity, if any, of smoke and posion in that environment.

Should we be banning charcoal BBQ's? What about bonfires? Lots of kids there. What about the risk from an open coal fire?

Personally, I think smoking is ridiculous, that a parent or grandparent that smokes in front of their children is not setting a good example but it is none of my business if they choose to do so.

Yeah, the bloke's obviously a bit thick for setting a bad example in front of the sprogs, but ffs op, wind yer neck in. It's outdoors, no-one will die* (apart from the bloke). Everyone's so morally outraged at everything. You'd never know we live on a crowded little island and we need to make an effort to get along.

*We'll all die. So make the most of it.

Yours,

I suspect for you it probably does but hey let me try and explain.
1. as they reach you you exhale in their face facing them whilst barely pushing them as they are about 18 months old and moving say a a foot at most back and forth.
2. Its a small childs seat they sit in with the back rest/foot holes type - not even someone as clumsy as you could push them off.

I am suggesting you are an internet keyboard warrior who would never say anything to anyone in that manner and that your anecdote is a fabrication.

I think you need to work out whether you are saying that to them or me

I am sure you speak like this to everyone you meet as you are most definitely not a cowardy custard with limited social skills who uses the anonymity of the internet to let their inner **** out enabling you to hide behind a keyboard being mean to folk in order to get a reaction - your so brave , wise and well just awesome ....swoons

Step three on trolling is you deny you are a troll in as rude a manner as possible.......can you resist replying...I doubt it

Do you ever consider the kids who work in horrendous conditions so you can have your cycling gloves, shorts fleece etc.?

we need to make an effort to get along

i think part of that effort is not smoking in front of folks children in a childrens play area. It is a big open space go find somewhere to smoke where no GAS. They dont care whether you smoke or not they care where yuo smoke and whether it impacts on them and their kids......its not that difficult to comprehend

Imagine weeing - i dont care where you do it but if you do it too near to me I will say something.

As i said originally it is pointless trying to explain this to folk as you need to be pretty unsympathetic/ dim to not realise how others will react to you smoking.

It's not good but if you confronted him do you really think he'd step back and say ," you've made a very valid point and from this point on I shall reevaluate my life and act in accordance with your wishes" .
No one on this website has said that and I can't imagine anyone would in real life.

Until I do can I smoke in every kids face?
Whataboutery at its finest - everyone knows you can always think of something worse but that fact does not justify this.

It is always a daft point to say oh look there is something worse - its not even a defence its an unrelated fact.
