I hope you've got the kettle on and bacon under the grill. Do firefighters prefer brown or red sauce?
Does sounds like a particularly tedious woman, well she'll certainly learn her lesson now!
Do firefighters prefer brown or red sauce?
Is that a euphemism?
No. Please explain 😐
Please don't.
OP. Please can you post a picture of your neighbour's face when they axe their way through the front door.
Is She dead? 🙁
Bonus points to scotchegg.....we are no longer a brigade it is a fire and rescue service. Give em a call.
Red
This has the makings of a classic!
Idiot neighbours
Stoves
Hetas
Building control
Fire and rescue
Axe to front door
Possible (maybe fortunate) death to small yapping dog
I am riveted, not going anywhere. 😀
I think we will need to 'rate' the 'fire and rescue service' naturally... 😀
Who regulates these things?
There's been a number of posts on here about people questioning how expensive installing a woodburner can be, and I'm guessing a number of folk just put them in...
On our installation the flue is costing more than the stove, and it ain't a cheap stove.
This thread would be enhanced with pictures of the neighbours door being 'put in' with a big red axe.
Yeah, pics needed.
See if you can get a quote for a conservatory while they are round!
Disappointed at the lack of bombers and damp shoes so far in this thread.
Well the nice chaps of Derbyshire Fire and Rescue have just left. I only called for advice expecting a Fire prevention officer to attend at some point. What I got was 2 appliances... Shocked does not cover it.
They said I did the right thing and checked the chimney breast with a Thermal imaging camera. All was clear. The ventilation from opening all the windows cleared any carbon monoxide build up.
They have not put her back doors in as they are happy she is out and the wood burner looks safe from their perspective. In all honesty I do feel a crew was over kill but they all said better safe than dead. I can at least get some sleep without the fear of not waking up.
The crew manager will be making a visit to the neighbour on an evening when she should be at home to issue the relevant words of advice and encouragement.
Thank you all for the positive comments. We shall see what the neighbour has to say when I wake up this afternoon.
Did they rock up with the blues and twos on? Where abouts re you in Derbyshire, couple of mates work for different crews in Derbyshire.
They have not put her back doors in as they are happy she is out and the wood burner looks safe from their perspective.
So it's the bucket of water down the chimney then?
I am in Sunny Ashbourne.
And Yes they did arrive with the blue's on. Much to my suprise. I called the non emergency number and expressed that is was an advice request.
Id still smash her backdoor in and spray a protective layer of white foam everywhere, but hey that's just me.
The local crew then. Mates over at wirksworth. Bit your other neighbours were thinking wtf!
(where's the fire)
Well done to the fire service concerned, best to always call them out than have a fatality.
I have spoken to a couple of neighbours and let'em know what has happened.
I am wide awake but can't got for a ride due to only having a cast removed from my wrist last week. I am still mad about what the neighbour has done.
So I assume the chimney is on the internal party wall?? How old is your house?
I think Stoners advice is the best.
You now need to contact building control ASAP and get the installation checked.
Now this is why stove installation can be expensive. All those that think it is a rip off can go and do their courses and work out how much you need to charge per install just to cover that cost.
That was very calm and controlled - I'd have had the door in, and used the excuse that I was worried she might be dead upstairs 🙂
A word of caution: Just ploughing in and bashing back doors in can cause irrepairable damage and a reluctance for your neighbour to entertain you in future. Try lightly lubing a probe and seeing if you can't gently slide it around the lip and into the rim, a gentle prising should open up a crack large enough to give you access to the rear of her semi, be wary as from what you've describe the smell that belches out will probably be rather foul.
😯 😆
lol at qwerty. Trouble is her back doors will be caked with soot and noxious fumes, so you'd probably not want to approach.
+100 Building control on Monday morning. They will come down on her like a ton of bricks if it hasn't been properly installed and commissioned.
Sorry to hear about this. Sounds like whoever installed it didn't put a liner in or they have made a complete bodge of it.
Seems wrong that you have to claim off your insurance as it will affect your no claims and as it was the neighbours fault tho?
Hope it gets sorted asap for you.
This also confirms that we made the right decision to have have our chimney lined earlier in the year when we had our stove fitted, despite the extra cost.
You possibly want to inform the local authority, environmental health department especially if you want compensation for damaged property. Local authority can prosecute her under the Environmental protection Act for statutory nuisance.
Also, grow a beard. It won't help but it will make you look cool as...
Personally I'd at least have another chat with her before you cause her the world of (possibly back door) pain! Highlight to her how it seriously escalated this morning then give the options. Last thing you want is a smoke free house but a neighbour from hell further down the line!
okay time for the professional advice.
firstly you did exactly the right thing in calling the emergency services.
secondly contact the local HSE by email now and contact by phone
if a number is available.
they can issue notices etc to neighbour and prosecute etc. they work 24/7
HETAS play no part what so ever.. they are a voluntary organisation who examine some installers..
The HSE will do bugger all as they deal with health and safety at work. You need your local Building Control department. They will deal with breaches of building regs and any prosecution.
Now to your legal case- Record everything on video, and with photos. Catalogue any damage and get a pod solicitor, not a no win no fee crew a decent solicitor a sue them for the damage, your costs and your distress.
give your local environmental health office a call asap
they do have some power (like the HSE inspectors) such as the right to enter a premise etc. and deal with nusiance from smoke and smells under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (EPA).
problems with smoke/fumes/gases entering into your property would be classed as a health risk and therefore be rated as a "statutory nuisance" under this Act
Now to your legal case- Record everything on video, and with photos. Catalogue any damage and get a pod solicitor, not a no win no fee crew a decent solicitor a sue them for the damage, your costs and your distress.
And then kill everyone to death with a sub machine gun just to be sure.
Interesting reading this thread back to back with some of the comments on this thread and this one. 🙂
Well if he warned her about it and she did it again, damaging his property in the process then unless she paid for my loss I'd be seeing her in court.
Alternatively he could go round and they could have group hug.
HSE are not only concerned with the workplace. Good advice call them. Also google RIDDOR as it is probably reportable.
You mean RIDDOR as in Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995, the system for reporting workplace incidents, as administered by the Health and Safety Executive which for the record deals with Health and Safety at work and only Health and Safety at work, unless something changed since I left work at 5pm yesterday.
Why are you giving this guy bad advice as if you know what you're talking about?
Ok get a gas safe registered engineer round. He will be legally required to report fumes. We have to riddor report on certain circumstances that aren't in places of work. I said it may be reportable as if it was a gas appliance it may well be.
The gas safe guy wouldn't know if it was from an open fire unless you told him.
I'd better ask the HSE if they could delete the report I sent them for a block of flats that had dangerous issues with the gas supply. Pretty certain it was purely residential too!
Apologies for poor information but riddor does not just apply to the workplace, your turn to apologise!!
Interesting the stuff about chimney liners (for the record OP I share your frustration and concerns).
We got our stove installed by a firm that were significantly cheaper than more established firms in the area (we still paid around £2.5k for 7.5kw Multi fuel stove plus liner and installation). One of the firms that quoted was less than complimentary about the new kid on the block but they did give us some advice at the time that was interesting.
There are a couple of types of liner you can get. One is suitable for wood burners only. A lot of installers will use this type for Multi fuel as well but it can fail due to the additional heat from coal etc.
We got a 908 liner which is rated for both.
When I asked about lining the chimney if we kept the open fire the previous owners had used we were told we didn't need one.
Seemed odd under the circumstances but they reckoned that enough carbon etc would have built up over 80 years to mean that it wouldn't need anything else.
Sounds like the issue is with the chimney rather than anything else.
OP, you didn't have any bats in your loft did you? Your neighbour could be in a staggering amount of trouble if she's just gassed a roost!
Nutt has a point. Off to ASDA with you. Buy a load of rubber bats, throw then in the attic, photograph the carnage and then dispose of the "carcasses" as they had "started to smell a bit". Sorted. 8)
So because the neighbour didnt get the job done proffesionally,
she has had 2 fire engines visit,
i senior fire oficer,
gas safe engineer,
HSE inspector,
Building control officer,
the next door neighbour,
environmnetla health dept of local council,
batman, without robin,
Just hope she has enough cups for all of them.
