Typo deliberate!

What's out there then? Present shopping, want to get a small, light c.4gb capacity MP3 player for someone to use in the gym. Needs to be easy to use, and a good quality brand.

No, I know they don't want an Apple, thanks, so no need to suggest one.

Creative stuff sounds pretty good in my experience. Zen Stone or MuVo are the tiddlier ones.

Of the diddy ones, the sansa won the gadget show review convincingly. Only about £35 too!

Thanks all! Looking at that one that won the Gadget Show, it looks ideal! Clearly the show worked well, seems to be out of stock everywhere I've been looking! Any recommendations for a (trustworthy!) online source for one?

out of interest why not ipod shuffle, probably the most reliable product apple make and perfect for the gym. Is it one of those anti fashion statements, which is as good a reason as any other than the fact that apple are no longer fashion more market leaders.

Dunno, tails. It's a present, and I've been told that Apple products would not be even slightly appreciated! If it was for me, I'd do it as an anti-fashion thing, but I'm an awkward bu99er like that!

Sansa Clip is good. I got my earphone cable caught in the hammer today and the mp3 player hit the floor with rahter a lot of force. Still works fine! Excellent battery life too.

iPods doom you to iTunes unless you faff about. Devotees will obviously think that's no bad thing, others may not want to be forced to use it by the hardware.

I used to have a 4gb Sansa Clip. Pretty neat little units and quite cheap now.

Sold it to get an iPod Nano second hand tho as it did not match my Macbook Pro, Ipod Classic and ultimately, my lifestyle*

*This is all nonsense. Its handling of ID3 tags on audiobooks was the breaker as well as the lack of playlist/podcast syncing.

er, or you could get a Sony S or E series walkman?

The S series 16Gb one Ive got (like this one ) is excellent, sound quality is better than an iPod, earphones are way better and it was cheaper too.

I got a 8Gb Sony NWZ-S638F from Amazon for £56. They've gone up now though. The sound quality is absolutely excellent. Small size. Drag and drop interface or use Windows Media Player to synchronise to your library. Will read iTunes but never tried it. Plays videos quite well for the screen size but I don't use this feature often.

Mediamonkey does those things also (ok so you may have to 'obtain' it if you want the full version for free). In fact I have found NOTHING that can match the ID3 tag and folder organisation functionality that Mediamonkey has!

Why not a shuffle
- because you can't choose tracks/albums and you have to use iTunes.

Creative

Except that you have to use I-tunes, it has no screen or buttons on the player, so navigation is unbearable, and you have to use the horrific excuse for a pair of headphones that come with it 👿

And relax...

To be fair I've never had a mp3 player that came with what I class as good earphones

Some do, but more to the point, you HAVE to use apple headphones with the shuffle because the buttons are on the headphones.
